The "Recommend Me A Game" Thread

I wanted to ask you all for recommendations on a arcade-style combat flight game, either in space or on Earth, since I've been playing so much of FreeSpace 2 and enjoying it.

But then I realised that such a question might be a waste of a thread, so I decided to open it up to general recommendations, so that anyone can ask for a game of a specific genre and get some recommendations.

I'm going to be downloading the demo for Tom Clancy's HAWX, to see if that satisfies my urges, but if anyone has any other recommendations for combat flight games which aren't too complex (For reference, Freespace 2 very nearly has too many controls for me to get my head around.), I'd love to hear them.

Preferably something my five year old computer can run, so nothing terribly recent. And if it's possible, I'd like something that's for sale digitally, rather than having to track down a physical copy.

Thanks, guys. And feel free to ask for your own recommendations!

It's got to be 15 years old now, but the original Wing Commander: Privateer was a hell of a good time. A quick Google for a digital purchase doesn't look encouraging, but it's certainly the first game that occurred to me.

You could always fire up Battlefield 2 and whore the jet!

Have you played X-wing and Tie Fighter? If no, them.

I remember Starlancer being some space shooty fun, and hell I played it on the Dreamcast. I bet the PC version is even better.

If your willing to deal with the modding of Freespace 2 (with the manager it's not that bad), Blue Planet is an amazing mod campaign, with complete voice acting.

Otherwise I'd recommend Freelancer, Darkstar One, and Tachyon: The Fringe (No idea if Tachyon is still as good as I remember it, but Bruce Campbell voices the main character and it's on Steam).

I have, and it's partly in remembrance of the Tie Fighter games that I want a modern equivalent.

If GOG.com would release the series, I'd be over the moon, but I suspect LucasArts is too far up its own ass to focus on its better, older titles.

    Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

I've taken a look at all of the games, and it seems like StarLancer, Darkstar One (Which is on GOG.com) and Tachyon: The Fringe will keep me going.

The latter two are available online, but I'm going to need to look for a way to get StarLancer :(
