Getting the PlayStation 3 Online

Here is the situation: I'm trying to help my dad get his PlayStation 3 online, so he can check out neat stuff like demos, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, etc.

The problems?

1) He lives in NC, I live in Toronto. So it's not like I can go over there and mess around with it.

2) I lack a PlayStation 3 of my own, so I am unable to guide him by using my own.

I figured I could just look for a guide posted somewhere online, but I felt that would lack social interaction. Plus, I'm curious to see if there are any particular quirks, nuances, precautions, or recommendations someone might bring up.

Of course, if no one feels like talking about it at any length, recommendations for a guide online would then be welcome instead.

    Wireless or wired?

For wired just stick the cable in, sign in and follow the instructions if I remember correctly. Simple.

Wireless, actually. Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned that.

Wireless, actually. Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned that.

I've got a spare 5 minutes so I'll just run through mine and list the steps I make.

    1) Go into the Settings column, go all the way down to the bottom and select Network Settings.
    2) Select Internet Connection Settings. A warning about changing network settings should show up, press X again.
    3) Select Easy.
    4) Select Wireless.
    5) Select Scan. A list of any available wireless connections should show up, select the proper network.
    6) It'll ask about the SSID, it should already be entered so just press right on the dpad.
    7) If he doesn't have a WEP/WPA/WPA2 key on his wireless network, select None. Otherwise, select the appropriate one and input the key.
    8) A list of all the settings (mostly 'Automatic' since we picked Easy at the start) should show up, if they're correct press X.
    9) Test Connection will show up, select it to start them. It'll run through them and hopefully succeed. If it doesn't, then something obviously went wrong somewhere along the way.

Once he's got that running, he can go over to the Playstation Network column and sign up for a PSN ID. That's pretty simple though, enter your details, select your PSN name and icon, yadda yadda. Then he can go on the PS Store and buy PSN games, download demos, etc.

    Awesome, thanks for that.

I should see which games he might be interested in... I know he likes stuff like SOCOM, Resident Evil, Call of Duty, and Tomb Raider, but I don't think most of that is on PSN Store, is it? Are there any recommendations based on those?

Hmm, SOCOM Confrontation should be on the PSN, though at this point he should just wait for SOCOM 4.

Call of Duty Classic is on both the PSN and XBLA, though it's a pretty poor port of CoD1.

As for Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, there should be a bunch of the old PS1 versions on the PSN. I think RE1-3 and TR1-3 are all on there.

    PSN recommendations I'd make are:
    Flower
    Flow
    PixelJunk Shooter
    PixelJunk Eden
    PixelJunk Monsters
    Super Stardust HD
    Joe Danger
    Shatter
    Wipeout HD
    Bionic Commando Rearmed
    Critter Crunch
    Trine

I'm not sure if he'd like them all but I think most of them have demos available, he could give them a try.

Thanks for the input. :) Not sure if he'd be interested in re-releases of games he's already played (PS1 RE and TR), but I could be surprised.
