I just made it through to Rhone in DQ2 and was promptly smashed into oblivion by a pair of Gigantes. What in the hell kind of place is this, and how am I supposed to survive in there? Fuck.

Yup. Welcome to DQII. Few things:
1. There's a shrine just a little ways ahead that has free healing and a save point, if you can make it to it.
2: Consider leveling up in the cave beforehand for a bit. I'm pretty sure there are liquid slimes in there to help.
3: Also consider just running from every damn thing. There's the safe point half way, and the final dungeon is also right there. And the dungeon is bloody easier than Rhone, go figure. By the time you're strong enough to handle Rhone, you'll blow away everything else.
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I've made a few more attempts, but it's slow going and level ups don't help much. Usually what happens is I get to that part of the Road to Rhone with the teleporting hallways and get set upon by a group of 4 green dragons. Then I have to cast Outside cause one of the squishies dies. I've never played a game this hard.
EDIT: Finally made it to the Rhone shrine. The enemies around this place are giving 4-8x more xp than the ones in the Road to Rhone. Feels like everything up to this point was really simple, I find myself having to actually cast buffs/debuffs and heal during combat like in a real RPG.

I honestly said, "Screw that!" to the Road to Rhone.
Combat? <run>
It's just such a painful spike of difficulty (strength of enemies per encounter), coupled with an insanely high encounter rate, made obscene by the fact it's a maze.
And, as the Wolfman said, things settle back down immediately afterward.
Places online keep telling me to get the main hero up to level 30 before tackling the last dungeon. Is this worthwhile advice? I've been grinding outside the shrine in Rhone for a little while and gaining some levels, but I sincerely doubt a difference of a dozen hit points is going to make or break me at the end.
Oh god Sidoh just murdered me. He was meleeing my squishies for 90 and he gets 2 hits per turn. The hero held out for as long as possible but there was no way to win. At least dying doesn't really set you back at this point in the game.

FUCK YEAH!!!
Awesome! That's about what my ending looked like.
I was terrified. No healing items, and the game made me trek back to the shrine. I was expecting something to jump out and eat me, forcing me to fight Malroth* again.
I at least had a Warp Wing so I could teleport back to the shrine. I didn't know that the monsters were gone and was pretty worried that I'd get killed and have to do it all over again.
And now on to DQ3. I've got the GBC version and I've already made a bit of progress but this game is obviously a lot more complex than the first two. It also gives out way less gold which is
It gives out plenty of gold -- if you have a Merchant Party member.
DQ3 is the only game I've seen where going Tank, DPS, Healer, Magical DPS isn't required. I think my run through on GBC was Hero, Thief, Goof-Off, Merchant. So I got a ton of extra items and loot. If I had to do it again (WHY isn't it on the DSi or Wii Store?) I'd go Hero, Merchant, Merchant, Thief, class change to Hero, Thief, Thief, Merchant, class change to Hero, Goof-Off, Goof-Off, Goof-Off, class change to Hero, Sage, Sage, Sage, class change to Hero, Warrior, Fighter, "something else" (Thief or Priest, probably). Switching to Wizard and Priest may be important in the middle there, not sure if Sage gets ALL the spells in DQ3. I know Merchant and Thief both get unique spells (ability to summon a store and Inn, IIRC).
Of course, I put in a vastly oversized ratio of my youth into DQ3, so....
I always just go Hero, Fighter, Thief, Mage --> Hero, Fighter, Thief, Sage but then I'm not obsessed. :P
Although I do always max out the Thief and Fighter's Luck and Agility (and the Fighter's Strength gets close, too) so they're great tanks, so I guess that counts a little.
Maybe I should switch out my mage for a Merchant (why they renamed him Dealer in the GBC I'll never know). I just beat the first boss (Kandar) and it was a really close fight. I'd rather power up through gear this first time through. It's all very new and experimental for me at this time.
DQ3 came with a map of the world right? My copy was just the GBC cart and nothing else, and Google Image Search is failing to provide a high quality copy or reproduction of the world map. Anyone have a good source for that?
Hey, since we've been talking about DQ2 perhaps you guys can answer a question for me. I often see artwork of 2's hero wielding a strange sword I don't recognize. You can see it here.

So I just got the boat in DQ3. Now I'm paralyzed by the seemingly endless opportunities for adventuring. I think it might be time to look up a faq cause god damn is the world large.
Any advice on what to do now? Find the Dharma temple maybe?
EDIT: Now's a good time to mention that I'm not very satisfied with my party. I have the hero, a warrior, a priest, and a thief. The priest and thief do pretty crappy damage. In fact all the priest does is heal people after combat and occasionally bonk someone with her wand. The thief has a steel whip which is alright I guess, I just wish he had more direct damage to a single target but none of the weapons for sale seem to be for thieves.

I would be happy to give you advice. Unfortunately, that's the point where both the battery and the NES decided to give up the ghost.
I have since acquired a Famicom (which... shouldn't have the same problem); and I have an excellent lead on getting the battery replaced tomorrow. Fingers crossed, eh?
Haha oh wow that sucks that your hardware asploded. Good luck on getting the battery replaced, I hope you don't get charged too much.
I found the Dharma temple and was disappointed to discover that you have to be level 20 to change class. I was mocked and ridiculed by the priest there when the character I wanted to change was below 20. Luckily I found some Metalys/Metal Slimes nearby to speed up the leveling.
I'm thinking of switching my thief to a cleric and my cleric to a sage. The only downside to this plan that I can see is finding equipment for the sage-to-be, since I have a feeling they can't wear as wide a variety as the cleric.
My warrior is also slow as hell so I might switch him to a fighter or a thief. He'll still hit hard from his time as a warrior, right?
Oh that's good to know. I wish there was an online resource for old manuals and stuff that came with these games when they were new. It seems like very few people have kept anything but the game.

I've said the same thing many times. I stumbled across one website that listed the original box contents, but haven't been able to find it again.
The only reason I'm using this list is because the front of the box says the fold-out came with it. Took me a long time to start using the map for DQ2; I became convinced it was included, or I would have stayed lost for a very long time.
I don't think I ever have anyone equipped with anything but the Goddess Ring.
The one person I have who doesn't need a Goddess Ring (Sensible Sandals) has a Meteorite Bracelet since he's the one with the Armamentalist scroll and that's a handy thing to fire off first.

I generally don't do any damage on the first turn anyway, so that doesn't matter at all to me.
Making progress in DQ3. I just chucked a sword into a volcano and HOLY SHIT the monsters are like 4x tougher than anywhere else in the world. I only need one more orb for whatever that gets you, so am I close to the end of the game?
So, I was attempting a broken hinge repair on my DS Lite and broke the ribbon cable. I immediately ordered a Blue DSi XL from Amazon ($136 shipped, thanks Warehouse Deals), but it won't be here until Thursday. DQVC waits for no man! I can't be DS-less for three days! I found my DS Phat (where did I put it all those years ago?) and then did an even longer search for the charger (of course the plugs are different), and I'll be using that for the next few days. This should be... interesting.
Oh, I also ordered a new top screen w/ ribbon cable for the Lite. Couldn't believe that they're only $11 shipped from Hong Kong. So cheap, I feel like I'm taking part in digital organ trafficking.

Rhone itself? Fuck that place.
hm.
Actually, let me check.
edit: Wow, I was completely wrong. Hero is 30, the Prince is 28, and the Princess is 23.
FUCK YEAH!!!

edit: I think this was probably the labeled version included with the game:

Any known name for it?
Looks like the normal Roto's/Loto's/Erdrick's Sword to me. The blade may be a little different, but the handle is unmistakable.
EDIT: After further GISing, it looks like it's the Thunder Sword.

Uhm. Cleric is your version of a Pilgrim, right?
Assuming so, my fold-out of "Weapons, Armors, & Items" seems to indicate that everything one can wear, the other can.
Here's the text of it, at least. I think.

That boss has something seriously unfair.
*Uses magic burst*
Well at least it can't do that again...
