[FFXIV] What's a linkshell? (rollin' on Wutai for beta. Lindblum for live)

So this game is in open beta now and I am playing it. I'm sure some of you are as well!

It's so pretty guys. Oh so pretty.

I'm playing a lancer but I am thinking about starting a pugilist.

Character is Dankin on Melmond. If you want I'll start a list and we can maybe play together


Everyone roll on Wutai. Thats where the PA linkshell is for right now.


When it goes live we're all re rolling on Lindblum! Or at-least 3 of us are so if you want to be cool you'll do it too.

It was my understanding you can be in multiple link shells.

We have 71 in the linkshell on Wutai, and another 26 or so we haven't been able to get pearls to yet.

links hell is where all the Links from the Zelda games go after the games are through.


There is a special place there for Wind Waker Link.

I had quite a lot of good times in FFXI

but I played that dang game (casually, it must be admitted) for 4 years

unless this new one is pretty radically different in gameplay not sure I can handle coming back.

Helpful tips for people who are having trouble downloading: start the download, then close the downloader, and find the .torrent file in the Final Fantasy XIV program directory (do a search because I forget where it is exactly.) Run that in your favorite torrent client, then when it's done just load up the downloader again.

And yes, it's the most stunning MMO you will ever play.

It is pretty different from XI in the class system. Guildleves are interesting and the game is sure pretty.
The SE torrent updater is trash and you need to get the files from another place.
Also if you plan to play with a mouse you will need to find a patch to enable the hardware mouse.
It is unplayable using the software mouse.

all the good times I had were basically incidental to the game itself. Enjoyed the storyline missions and the challenge they could present, but that was it. Doing dynamis and such was fun enough but not because the game was enjoyable. More because I was playing with a bunch of awesome people and we had tons of good times over vent.

The game itself just had far too much poor design.

Remember the late 90s when they started porting FFs to PC and they were the laziest and most awful ports ever? Yeah.

I love SquareEnix, but yeah. They are so used to working on consoles, they are very problematic with PC porting. FFXI was a direct port, and as a result, simple changes to the system clock causes you to run 10x faster than a chocobo (which can get you swiftly banned, so don't do it.)

They need to hire a team from something like Fallout 3 to do their PC ports.

I'm on Wutai right now, as well.

I was going to have neville make an SE++ thread for those of us picking this up at launch, but nevermind!

Just so you guys know, if you want to roll with SE++, we're going to be rolling with neville's old FFXI crew. Apparently they're choosing the server that's listed alphabetically after Kupo. So whatever the fuck.

EDIT: Apparently, that server might be Lindblum. Let me check with nevs to see if that's still how him and his crew are rolling, or if he just wants to say fuck it and roll on Wutai.

Deny. The combat system in this game is actually pretty good, especially when you mix and match a few different skills from each class and get a good flow for it.

I liked FFXI's interface with a controller. I like FFXIV's interface with a controller.

I fucking hated both of them with keyboard and mouse.
