The Secret of Kells, or Brendan and the Secret of Kells, is an absolutely stunning, gorgeous, wonderful, beautiful animated film that was given limited theatrical release across the world earlier last year and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, an honor it absolutely deserved.

secretofkells.jpg

It is coming out on DVD and BluRay October 5th!

The-Secret-of-Kells.jpg

The film is an absolute callback to - and call to arms to bring back - the glory days of traditional animation. Using hand-drawn craftsmanship and design along with modern compositing technology and animation techniques, Secret of Kells was created by Cartoon Saloon, an Irish company founded by Paul Young and Tomm Moore and was worked on as a labor of love by those two fine upstanding gentlemen for nearly a decade before being completed.

You seriously need to see this movie.

alg_kells.jpg

It is so goddamn pretty, and these guys did this at huge expense and risk to themselves and absolutely deserve your financial support, not to mention your adoration and enthusiasm. They run an independent studio and basically financed this film by doing commercials and eating ramen until they could get a few investors to put together enough money to make it happen for a ridiculously small budget.

02brendan_aidan_ink.jpeg

Seriously. Support these struggling artists. This film has grossed only like $600k as of July of this year, and it absolutely deserves to make a shitload more.

Go pre-order the film now.

Do it.

thank me by supporting the artists who made it and purchase it with actual currency

seriously, I have no affiliation with these guys other then the time I met them and they were incredibly nice, sincere dudes who labored for years to make this happen. I'm just a guy who loves great animation, design and folks willing to sacrifice for art they love

    they deserve the support

I posted on this sometime around the last oscars... its kinda amazing that netflix does not have it yet, and that its not on dvd yet. Its really a masterpiece, at least in originality and picture. I thought this would never make it to the states.

There's no way I'd watch it on anything but a huge screen in a bluray player, too much went into it

people going to see this should realize that it isn't a fairy tale, really. It's an imaginative way to tell the story of the origin of the Book of Kells, which is a very important and beautiful book that was made in Ireland. You've seen books like it, or pages from it, whenever you see those old biblical texts that have pictures that frame the page. That's called Illuminating, and it involves details that you would think you would need a microscope to create, but medieval monks created with rudimentary lenses.

    for example

    kell2bmp.gif

That was free handed, possibly by someone with just their naked eye. In the Medieval period.

I can't even imagine watching the film adaptation. The Name of the Rose is like Watchmen to me--it exists in its particular medium in a way that can't be adapted.

    I do love that book.
