For a game made by Criterion it's odd that there is no sense of speed.
Anyway, the demo didn't sell me and unlike Burnout Paradise I don't think this game is going to be much different from what was offered here. Looks like Need For Speed will remain in its slump.
The Cop Chase was actually quite thrilling. I got every racer, but I think I can do it a lot faster than that (oh god, will this game inspire a Mirror's Edge-esque "I CAN DO EET FASTERRRRR" feeling? I hope so)
So in order to unlock the Racer portion, you need like, PSN friends I guess. I don't have any who wants to be my friend? My PSN is TwentyOneTwlv

You only need 1 friend who has the demo. Send a friend request to Lucascraft. I'll add you and that will unlock your other map. Pretty simple really.
I think your maybe overestimating the road block. It's less intended to straight up take out dudes but instead mess them up and give you a good chance to close the distance. Honestly I kinda prefer that. It would be kind of lame and easy if you could just spam powers to take them down.
Either way I enjoyed the demo and this game suddenly bumped way up on my watch list for this fall.
Actually, the road block is good for bringing them to a halt and setting them up for an instant kill; if they're at a standstill, and you're going at 150+ mph, then just hitting them will bust them. Not too keen on the spikes though, but they're useful for taking the last bit of health from a racer you've overtaken.
I wonder if the helicopter will be the same as in Hot Pursuit 2, dropping barrels of explosives before turning around and firing a guided missile...

Thanks Lucascraft! Now if only I had some more people to compete with on the Speedwall :P
I love the demo, and I will certainly be picking this game up as soon as I can.
If you (or indeed anyone) want to add me, go ahead; I'm sure I'll be playing the hell out of the demo as my rivalry with someone I know from Ridge Racer 7 and Burnout Paradise continues (we ended up tied on the Paradise demo's Burning Route with a 55.95; this was after about 3 weeks of solid play, at a point where others were only just breaking 59 seconds).
Also, retook 1st place on my Speedwall about 3 hours ago with a 3:23.53; first on my list to break 3:24. I'm sure that'll change by tomorrow, though.

Racing games kind of depress me. I find arcade-style racers (like most of the recent NFS games) vapid and uninteresting, but I don't have the time or patience for hardcore, simulation style ones (like NFS Shift or the GTR/Race series). And I say this as a person who, in real life, loves cars and has watched auto racing all his life.
Last racer I played was Blur, which was the most disappointing shit imaginable. I went from loving that game to hating it in roughly the same period of time it took Tycho and Gabe to go from writing blog posts praising it to blog posts condemning it in the strongest possible terms.
I played the Cop level with the Crown Vic and I thought the environment and road was really excellent but I didn't enjoy the driving very much. The car felt way too loose and swervey and I couldn't corner at all. I assume it was because I was steering too hard, and I wonder if getting the MS wheel out of the closet would help. Maybe the physics are somewhere between arcade and sim.
Also, I sent a few friend requests to people ITT, hoping to get to play the race!

I think Criterion said they alterered the steering deliberately, although I'd have to track down the magazine I was reading recently about it.
Holy hell, BlitzAce. How are you getting these times?!? You're a good 20 seconds faster than me in both levels!
For the race one, a lot of practice; most of the time I'm gaining now is from reducing how much I slow down, and limiting my nitrous to when it's most effective. Plus it helps that I've got at least 2 other people on my Speedwall who keep forcing me to go faster still.
As for the cop one, luck. Sheer blind luck. Think I managed to bust 3 of them in the space of 10 seconds on my best run.

Definitely in the realm of arcade though NFS always tries to emulate the physics of the license cars somewhat. A 370Z isn't going to be taking corners sharply at 150 MPH.
After playing it a couple more times, I found that what my actual problem in the Crown Vic was was that I couldn't keep it going in a straight line on a straight road. While I'm sure that a car like that would become unstable even in a straight line at speed, it wasn't much fun to deal with. Maybe I've got a twitchy thumb or something.

How do you do the sharp turns? The ones you can't just power through i mean. Release gas and press again to drift, or what? What about the extremely sharp left turn after the tunnels? For nitrous do you only do it tuphill or in a straight line? My best time on the race is only like 3:35, I don't know where i will get 10 seconds from besides absolutely not running into anything (which I just don't see happening.)

For sharp turns, I'll tap brake, steer into it, and hit the gas within quick succession. That goes for the turn after the tunnels too; I'm usually going at about 165mph by the tunnel exit, instantly start the drift from out wide, hit the apex at roughly 135-140mph, and snap out of the drift going about 145-150mph into the next two turns. Some of the turns I had been drifting at first can actually be done without if you start out wide enough; the right turn before the tunnels being one of them.
I generally only use nitrous on straights, and only up to about 135-140mph on the final shortcut, since anything more is a waste until you get back on the road. Plus you can shave maybe a second or so off at the end of the shortcut by waiting until you've gone into 6th gear before hitting nitrous; hitting it straight away will put you at about 160mph in the final corner, but delaying it means you're nearer 170mph.

Oh, so you're taking shortcuts. The only two i've really tried seemed to not save me any time. The first one is after your first sharp left it splits off and goes under the highway, the second is a really long offroad portion that you can enter maybe a mile after the really sharp left after the tunnels. Both seem to shave off about a second, but with the side effect of me not getting any nitrous while i'm using them. Which or how many shortcuts do you take?
I've definitely got a feel for which turns I can take without releasing the gas including the slight right before the tunnels, but I think i'm still losign more speed on them than necessary.
So for sharp turns you go: release gas, turn sharply and tap brake (not hand brake right?), press gas.

I don't even touch the hand brake, but that's just my own personal driving style.
As for the shortcuts, don't bother with the first you mentioned, and enter the second entrance of the second one (the first entrance is after a right hander, the second one is on a straight after the following left); if you get the nitrous right, you'll hit the shortcut entrance at 165+mph, and if you take the first corner of the shortcut right, you should still be at 140-145mph, gradually dropping to about 115-120mph through the twistier section. Once you get on the uphill bit, nitrous until you reach 135-140mph, then save the rest until after the right hander, boost back up to 135mph, wait until you get back on the road, then nitrous once you change up a gear.
EDIT - Great, now I have to shave off about 3 and a half seconds to take first again. I have no idea where this friend has found all that time, but I suspected the 370Z was potentially faster overall. Just not as much as doing a 3:17.89... o_O

Jesus christ... 3:17 is madness. Talking to my friend we both figured 3:20 was as low as you could go.
Thanks for the tip on the shortcut. I'll try that out when I get home. Also, trying to get a better time while intoxicated is probably not a good idea, lol.
I saw a 3:15 run on youtube and nearly shit myself. 3:36 is the best I can do right now, I definitely need more practice.
If it's the same one I saw, then it's basically my route, only faster. Although I'm now having absolutely no luck with the AI racers and the traffic. "What's that? You wanted to take that corner on the inside, 10mph faster than usual, and a second ahead of your best time? RED SUV SAYS NO."

Really digging the demo. Burnout 3 is my favorite racing game, and this brings memories of it. I'm even thinking of getting the 360 version instead of the PS3 and resubscribing to Live just for it.
Based on the map that pops up to select your race it seems like it's a lot more connected highways instead of the city grid that most of burnout paradise is.

A lot of Paradise was city, no doubt, but I wouldn't say most of it was city. Well over half of it was country roads.
EDIT: Woooo 3:36 falls! With a super badass, lightning-quick 3:35.12.
Well, half of the map was country, of which there were roads on, but the actual combined length of the roads in the country was probably a little over half the combined length of the city roads, especially if you count the DLC island.
The roads on the NFS map just seems to me like the country portion of the burnout map.

Demo left a sour impression. Game is gorgeous, controls are too floaty. Maybe Initial D has me spoiled.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is an unqualified triumph. It's stuffed with content but rarely for the sake of it, and knowing Criterion it will be handsomely supported for months to come, even though it's already the best pure arcade racing game since Burnout Paradise. For Need for Speed, it's a return to critical form to match, justify and potentially expand the series' enduring popularity.
Hot Pursuit isn't a car collecting game. Although you unlock vehicles as you progress, there's no real garage to speak of. The focus is on driving these cars, not upgrading, tweaking or painting them. But that's OK because the list of vehicles in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit reads like a multi-billionaire's Christmas list. The Bugatti Veyron, McLaren F1, Lamborghini LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, Mercedes SLS AMG, Nissan GT-R SpecV and Porsche Panamera are all here. And that's just a sampling.
Much in the same vein as Burnout Paradise I suspect, which is fine by me
Criterion delivers again. I read some ungood things about the demo and decided to ignore this. But you just can't write off Criterion, can you? I love those guys.
Hope it keeps getting great reviews and they do as good a job of the PC port as they did for B: Paradise.
