Between X and XII? X is relatively good. XII is wasted potential thanks to corporate melding and catering to pre-teen girl focus groups fucking over what should have been Matsuno's magnum opus.

Is FF12 worth playing? Got it ages ago but never got far in it, hated 13 and burned myself out on Tactics for the time being. Kind of getting an interest to play this curious little rpg.
It's my favorite of the series...but some people hate it with a passion.
There's no reason not to play it at least once (as is true of every FF title)
Is there anyway to actually get into Final Fantasy: Tactics? I've had the PSP remake for a long time now, and the farthest I've ever gotten is level 5, third or fourth battle. It's not that I don't like the type of game; I do. It's just... the game is not fun, to be honest.
Kinda tangentially related, but I'm a little bummed that we'll probably never wind up seeing the DS remake of SaGa 3 (Final Fantasy Legend III here in the US), because it was a really good game. Much better than the huge crapshoot that was Legend II, wherein random stat boosts and monster mutations were king. I wouldn't mind giving it another shot really.
4 Heroes also sounds like something I'd consider trying, after I get some actual idea of how the combat system works out like a video or a decent explanation.

The first couple battles are pretty bad, especially the first time around. But after Dorter you should have a few characters expanding into the better classes and shops that actually sell equipment for them. The more classes/skills you unlock, the more fun it gets (although it's sort of a bell curve, once you've put in 200 hours or so in multiple playthroughs there's not a lot that can challenge you).

Well, let's not lie here.
X is way worse in that departement.
It's still a 5 on the scale, while we don't have the technology to put X-2 on the pre-teen girl focus scale

Now that Tifa's confirmed, the one character that most needs to be included is...Yuna, honestly, but I really hope Faris gets in too. Awesome tomboy pirate!
12 is alright. I enjoyed it well enough, even though I tend to put it towards the bottom of my ff list. If you already own it, no reason not to play it and find out if you like it yourself. Like 13 though, the game will feel pretty sluggish and slow-going until the combat opens up (in the case of 12 that's when you unlock gambits). Also, don't let the game fool you, Vaan is not the main character.

Well, you don't play X-2 for the "story" or the girl power.
You play it because it has by far the best battle system in the series, good gameplay, and is just pure unadulterated fun.

I guess I'll try and do that, then. I mean, I liked FFTA and I've never head anyone say that was better than FFT in any way, so I must start to like FFT after a while... probably.

Please be aware that this resulted of your statement that XII was aimed at pre-teen girls. So, the argument is still valid especially if you use it yourself. And seriously X-2 is all in your face with the girl power.
Also to make a list of FF that appeal to pre-teen girls. (IMO) From strongest in that department to weakest
1. X-2 (Everything + Dress up simulator)
2. VIII (Love theme, clothes n'shit, Squall)
3. X (Love theme)
4. IV (Cecil's struggle and his go full bishounen paladin shit part)
5. XIII (Anime)
6. IX (cute design, and some other little parts)
7. XII (Uhmmm, I seriously don't see much of it here. Vash became the main and apart from that ?)
Can you help me out on your XII argument? Because honestly I have no idea what you mean.
I believe the claim is that they focus-tested it and girls didn't like Basch as the main character, so they made Vaan.
Either way, I don't see how most of the FF games would appeal much to the traditional understanding we have of pre-teen girls going on here. If anything, the FF titles strike me as the *least* fan-servicey Japanese RPGs.
And hell, regardless of how much "girl power" in FFX-2 might appeal to random girls, the challenging and fast-paced combat likely wouldn't.

I know all of two or three girls who are into RPGs, so I don't get why they were worried about that demographic to begin with.
I don't find Vaan too offensive, but was dressing him like a Chippendale really necessary?
I'm bout 3 hours in and I don't mind Vaan too much. The story seems okay and if I had to toss out a complaint it would be the sound quality of the voice acting but it doesn't bother me too much. I got semi far in X (thought I can't remember half the story) but Tidus never seemed to appeal to me.
You seem to have forgotten Vaan's RIDICULOUSLY HIGH ABS.
HOLY SHIT HOW DOES HIS BODY EVEN WORK.
Anyway, I really liked XII mechanically, because it was really fun to play (and I am alone here, I guess). But X has the better story. There's no denying that, really.
There's Balthier in XII, though. I think he redeems all of the other characters.

I enjoyed XII's story somewhat more as little as there was. X was complete but it was somewhat meh for me. Couldn't get into it.

The demographics who play FFXII don't have abs and don't know any better. :P
XII had a pretty generic story, what with rival nations, empires and resistances, the obvious bad guy being the obvious bad guy until the end, magic spelled with a "k", etc. But I still liked the game as a whole much better than XIII, and slightly better than X. Had XIII kept a similar battle system to XII's I would have kept playing it a while longer.

Various people liked X or XII more, for reasons you will have to drag kicking and screaming out of a flamewar.
Both are actually pretty damn enjoyable, for their own reasons.

Never compare Final Fantasies in this thread. Down that path lies madness.
I, for one, am super happy that Duodecim is going to have all the old characters, because I didn't get a PSP until recently, and really wanted to play Dissidia. Now I'll get to basically do that, plus more, for the same price... only much, much later.
So I'm playing ffxii and I'm trying to figure out why, in a world of Moogles, rabbit folk, lizard folk, lion or whatever the fuck folk. Your party consists primarily of humans.

Every game needs a playable character that attacks enemies with a harp.
Vaan's outfit is pretty stupid...but I don't think it's ever really bothered me.

You best be takin' back that "even" in regards to Mog. He's the most badass Moogle you'll ever find.
