Somewhere in the Archipelago, I'm not entirely sure where... is my floating bar, "The Palmless Oasis"
Everyone and anyone is welcome to modify it as they see fit, I can't get the damn stair-chairs to work for me no matter what I try and have half given up on it.
Is that the place with the little boat dock made of submerged half-steps?
Guess I'm one of the few immune to Minecraft's charms. I'm already bored shitless of this game. I love the whole day is peaceful, night is dangerous, killer mobs idea. I don't think I could play the game without mobs. But during the day it always feels like I'm in a rush to get shit done before night falls (as the day seems way to short) which takes the relaxing angle out of the picture.
Guess it just doesn't strike the right balance for me. Oh well! Back to LoL and Dragon Age!
You could always explore and dig out a mine at night. You don't have to just stand watch in your fort until morning.

Or secure your site with walls/cliffs and torches so you can continue working in the evening.
Also I seem to be growing some absolutely monster trees somehow. Like HUGE trees with tons of branches. They are pretty awesome. I am tempted to build a tree fort in one
Is it possible to build hanging ladders or are they required to go on the side of a block?

I don't *think* it is... but I don't know, I've never tried...
You could probably use glass and it would kind of sort of look hanging :P
Ok, the hugeness of the tree is slightly lost because the other trees around it grew up before I could get the pic, but here's a view from underneath to show the branches. You can see how far it extends to this side and you can just see where it extends on the other two sides. The other trees started to grow into it though..
And a view from nearby mountain. You can see the dirt block where I planted the sapling on top of the lower tree.
So ... I found out on accident that lag can give you free resources. If you cut a stack in half just as it lags you will remain holding the half you cut but the other half will revert back to a 64 stack. Several seconds later I also found out that this same process can delete your entire stack from existence. Oh well, it was just cobblestone anyway.
Yeah I noticed this too, managed to double some mossy cobble quite a few times, was nice :-)
I have had trees grow like that. There is currently one on top of my floating castle(east of home on freebuild). I also had a couple grow like that in my tree grove. Really threw things off so I spent what seemed like hours chopping it down. I did get a full stack of trees out of it though.

This is of course what I do. But I dunno, still, when I do that it feels like I'm waiting for daytime to have some real relaxing fun. Outside it's so nice and trippy looking, underground it's just gray blocks and more gray blocks.
I am very proud of my underground garden though. It's rough getting underground trees to grow!

I'll just point out that you can switch freely between difficulty levels. So you can set your sp game to peaceful when you don't want to deal with monsters and then other difficulties when you feel like putting them back in.

I would love a redstone watch. When I go to dig at night I'll end up not coming back up til midday. If I remember I will take note of night falls time, and just come up 10 minutes later, but an actual watch would be nice.

Notch said some sort of time-keeping device was in the works.

I sent him an email suggesting that he instead make a solar panel. Place a solar panel on the surface, route red stone down below and use it to indicate if the sun is out. Later, it could power machines. It would be simple enough to teach people to use red stone.
When I was creating "Jodo's Hole" - I thought mirrors for outside light would be super duper awesome. Instead I just blew another hole down to my original hole and called it a skylight.

Someone suggested seasons on the official forums... A bit more drastic though. Basically, you'd start right at the beginning of summer, days are long, nights are peaceful and short. You'd have to build an appropriate shelter, and stock up on supplies for the winter. As the seasons changed, nights would become more perilous, and longer. By the time winter hits, days are really short, and there would even be some mobs out during that time. Nights be really long, and there'd be more enemies, and they would even be tougher.
If they include flying enemies and ones that are smart enough to figure out ways into your fort, this could be awesome.
I've finished the prototypes of the new defenses of Columbia. Soon to be gracing sky platforms near you!
We chose the gold one.
Oh shit.. Minecraft minigame needs to be implemented. Scorched Earth, Minecraft Edition! Instead of turns, two teams are required to obtain the resources necessary to create the shells to fire off. I'd play that shit. I'd play that shit hard.

There is randomly-generated stuff outside the 'boundary chasm'. This is normal, and expected, since you can see past the boundary. It continues the landscape as it existed just fine, but obviously does not continue the things I edited in like snow or sand or whatever.

Single player lunch break minecraft is going well. Fortified my cave-base entrance to prevent unwanteds from coming in, put together my water source, cleared out a flat area for some dirt and got to plantin' me some underground crops.
Then, I went into a previously unexplored branch of the cave system.
Cool! This should make navigating in game a bit easier. Also, a side effect of the map editing is that Rapture looks like it's built in an oceanic crater, which is pretty cool.
I don't get the point of mining for Iron for this rail... does everyone know that /iron is a command, and does spawn iron bars in front of you? Get everyone together in a circle, and it's a veritable bukkakke of iron flying out into a pile for whoever's building the thing to pick up and use.
Edit: I'm ashamed to use the word "bukkakke" in this sense... but dammit, I'm leaving it.
/iron is disabled on my server. So is /wood. EARN WHAT YOU BUILD!
I make all my glass, thank you very much.
Speaking of which, I think I may have to dig up more desert, for my little lavaland experiment...
I'm going to start putting signs WAY out on the edge of nowhere... with a single torch next to them.
Then, when these awesome images get posted, people will see those torches and travel out to find them :P
Feels like such a waste looking at the size of that... and knowing there's only about 20 people allowed there at a time. Just thinking of how big Rapture is, alone, gives the same feeling.
Edit:
Hah, anyone watch Fullmetal Alchemist?
Need to turn that map into a giant transmutation circle....
I had this vision of carving out the mountain that I built my lavaland home over into a giant skull with lava running out the eyes and nose/mouth.
Then I loaded the rendered image and realized two things.
1. It would face away from the camera and so the image would never see it.
2. Someone has already done this.
Looks like it's back to the drawing (MS Paint) board to come up with something new. At least my float castle platform was adequately covered in torches so that it stands out clearly.
Love that you put up the rendered image Ein. Thanks!

The minecraft wiki has a really useful guide for getting stairs to face the direction that you want.

Everyone else thought it would make a bitchin' tower defense game before this was even constructed.
edit: That's a lie but a lot of people have brought the subject up before.
