Question regarding "Dexter" season premier- this is driving me crazy please help!

Ok, so I have a question for fellow "Dexter" fans on something that just doesnt make any sense. Anyone who can clear this up for me, I'd really appreciate it.

In a nutshell, why are the police looking for "Arthur Mitchell" and "Kyle Butler"??? Why oh why???? Please help!

Here is what I remember: Last season (season 4), Dexter used the alias "Kyle Butler" in order to get close to Arthur Mitchell, who he knew was the now infamous Trinity Killer. Later in the season, while investigating the scene of a murder, Dexter learns that the murdered man was named Kyle Butler, making Dexter realize that Trinity was attempting to hunt down Kyle Butler nd kill him. We later learn that Trinity looked up all the "Kyle Butlers" in miami. He went to one of the real "Kyle Butler's" home, but realized it wasnt the Kyle Butler (Dexter) he was looking for. The real kyle butler threatens to call the cops, so Trinity is forced to just beat him over the head to death and flee the scene. Dexter than finds another Kyle Morgan, drugs him and tries to use him to lure Trinity to him, it works but then Dexter is called in for questioning and by the time he gets back Trinity has escaped from the van, etc etc etc we all know how the rest of the season goes.

So why now are the police/Quinn/FBI looking for "kyle butler"??. Additionally, why are they looking for someone named Arthur Mitchell? I just don't get it...I'm starting to think that this is a legit hole in the show's plot and that the writer's are just expecting (or hoping) that the viewers just accept it and go along with it? I mean we the viewers know who arthur mitchell is, and obviously dexter knows who he is, but why the hell are the cops looking for arthur mitchell? And why are they looking for someone named Kyle Butler? It is simply not explained in the season's first two episodes or anywhere on Showtime's website. This is driving me crazy, I'm not bragging but I'm a pretty intelligent person and this is just driving me nuts. Is there a reason the cops are looking for Arthur and "kyle", or is it a plot gap that the writers just expect us to look over???????

Arthur Mitchell was his real name. The police/FBI raided his home at the end of the last season. They found his family but not Arthur Mitchell. Dexter had taken care of him and the police/FBI believe he is on the run.

Dexter used the alias Kyle Butler to interact with the family. The family told the FBI about Kyle Butler. Arthur Mitchell is missing. They believe Kyle Butler (Dexter) might know where he is.

Invisible thanks for the clarification...indeed that does make sense

"Kyle" (Dexter) ingratiated himself into the Mitchell family, and was close with Arthur's teenage son. It makes perfect sense that the mitchell family would tell the cops/fbi that their husband/dad was hanging out with a guy named "kyle butler". But refresh my memory, why did the cops raid Arthur Mitchell's house in the first place at the end of last season? I remember but just forget why, lol

You are right tho, thanks a lot. I think I'm just a little rusty at remembering the details of last season's final few episodes, they were so intense and so much going on I'm just a little hazy on the sequence of events that lead to season 4's ending. Thanks pal.

At the end of last season Deb and the cops discovered that the Trinity killer actually kidnapped and killed a fourth victim at the start of his ritual. Using that info they interviewed the kid Dexter saved who remember a flyer from Arthur's group which led the police to his body dump sites and then to him
