I've been looking for a certain type of game out there and it either hasn't been made yet or I just haven't found it yet. I need something to play in between shooting people in the face in Bad Company 2 and shiving people in the face in World of Warcraft.
Wondering if anyone here may know a game that would fit the bill.
I'm looking for an online multiplayer game (but not really an MMO by traditional sense) that involves some strategy, perhaps resource collection, base building, research, unit management. But here's the kicker, your contributions would go towards a greater good for your side in a persistent setting. Think Chromehounds meets Planetside meets Civilization 5.
I've been jonesing for this game that doesn't exist for some years now.
Isnt shattered gallaxy pretty much exactly what your describing? Its an RTS MMO. Its a blast..in theory. I could never get into it cause my units just got pwned.
No persistence to it though other than your rank changing.
Thats not true, you puchase upgrades for your units that are persistant.
I'm referring to playing through the campaign, not just the MP.
Command and conquer 4 had a similar upgrade system but honestly it was the first one in the series i just could not play futher then a few levels in. amazing how they went from utter amazing (3) to utter crap (4).
What was the name of that marines vs aliens game that ran on the HL engine? They're coming out with a second one... The name slips past me at the moment, but that's pretty damn close to what you want. Only thing it's missing is persistence.

Natural Selection.
Yeah. That's it... Man I don't know what's wrong with me today. I'm losing my mind.

I guess I should have said "strategy" rather than "RTS" but still...

I guess that I'd still consider EVE Online a decent fit for all those requirements despite not be an RTS in the vein of Starcraft.
Seriously, Shattered Galaxy is what you're looking for.
You command one squad (6-12 units, depending on your stat breakdown) into battle along side members of your faction for control over provinces on a planet. The more provinces you control, the faster your victory timer ticks, once that happens, you get a good amount of rare resources (that only paying players get) to equip your units.
And when I say equip your units I MEAN equip your units. Off the top of my head you can change:
Weapon
Armor
Engine/Biocore
Power Cell
Visor
Accessories
at the very least on every individual unit. Some units can be modified more, some less, like the Organic units.
Excellent, I'll have to check out Shattered Galaxy. I did the Eve thing for a couple years, got torp spec done so I can fly a Golem, but just could bring myself to grind missions to buy one. I'm not much of a PVPer and PVE in that game only goes so far. Once they start letting Carriers into empire space then I may give it another look.
Unfortunately, most games of this type really are PvP.
There have been various attempts at this kind of game, and I've played most of them, but they all had various flaws.
Shattered Galaxy: Probably the most successful (relatively, at least), but has a problem with the grind.
Project Visitor: Old game with some cool ideas, but it was never able to get the online/offline balance done right. Also tiny playerbase.
Beyond Protocol: Good ideas but had problems with a clunky interface/insufficient development.
Mankind: I never actually played this one, but I don't think it's around anymore.
EVE sort of is this as well, or at least the EVE trailers are. In actual practice the game is less about strategy and resources and more about lag and chaos.
I guess I should say, I have no problem with PVP. In fact I'd welcome it. I guess the issue with Eve is that it's an extreme PVP. The issue with normal PVP in Eve is that you're pretty much all in or all out (0.0 vs Empire), The problem with faction PVP is that you can also get jumped in Empire space.

There aren't any of those, so far as I'm aware.
There's one being made by former Command and Conquer guys, but I can't remember the name of it. It was at PAX though.

That isn't an RTS though, even if it matches pretty much every other point in his criteria.
The OP says nothing of RTS'dness.

or savage 2 if you hate yourself.
unfortunately you missed both these games by several years and their communities kind of suck now.

I'm surprised absolutely no one mentioned this so far, outside of a vague hint with no name.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
