Mother 3 / Earthbound

The question is simple. I've never played Earthbound or Mother 3 before. Should I play Earthbound before Mother 3 or can I dive straight into Mother 3? Will I appreciate Mother 3 that much more if I've played Earthbound?

    Not really, it's similar to how ICO & Shadow of the Colossus are related but not direct sequels per se.

    However, they are both excellent games, so you should play Earthbound anyways :)

    You'll be fine jumping straight into Mother 3. That said, Earthbound is fantastic.

    Heh. My gal from New Jersey has a copy and I'm strongly considering getting an SNES just to play it when she visits.

    I don't think it really matters, OP. Both are great.

    Mother 3 second.

    There are many in jokes in Mother 3 that you wouldn't get if you hadn't played EB yet. That, and really, you wouldn't understand why Pokey is such a terrible little bastard.

    I wish someone just sold carts with the translated Mother 3 on it. I don't want to go through the trouble of trying to find a flash cart and importing the game.

    I also wish they would just put earthbound on virtual console already. I'm seriously considering buying it on ebay.

    From what I hear, Nintendo won't be putting it on VC because they are afraid that some of the musical references would get them into legal trouble. Which is a really lame excuse.

    Like sheep said, mother 3 is full of little inside jokes and references to earthbound so I would play eb first. It's probably my favorite game of all time. Every time I hear the theme song I get all goosebumpy.

    Also tomato's translation for mother 3 is really really good. I believe he is a professional translator and the dude and his team spent years getting it absolutely perfect. He also writes articles comparing Earthbound to Mother 2 in terms of localization if you're curious aboot that stuff.

    Um but yeah good luck getting a copy of earthbound.

    Considering one of the tracks they sampled is from a Beatles record, it's probably in their best interest to not have to pony up the royalties.

    Also, while I love EB, Mother 3 is the better game.

    I tend to not get choked up by video games and one of the later chapters of Mother 3 had me pretty

    Earthbound is pricey, no doubt about it. But a lot of current computer / console games cost $50 or $60, right? So it's not that much more than those and (my personal opinion) is one of the most entertaining games ever. It made me laugh, it made me cry (really!), and it took a helluva long time to finish. Like . . . just . . . so awesome.
