In an interview during PAX 2010, Mortal Kombat Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick revealed a successor to the PSP, the "PSP2", stating "... we have a PSP2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We're running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We're definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it's a pretty powerful machine."

Media Go
Media Go is a video and audio player developed by Sony Creative Software, announced at E3 2009 for Microsoft Windows. Media Go manages content on Sony family products such as Sony Ericsson cellular (mobile) telephones and the PSP (PlayStation Portable)/PSP Go; it is also able to playback multimedia content, serving a similar function to that of Apple's iTunes. Media Go is capable of accessing the PlayStation Store, Sony Ericsson's PlayNow Arena and in some cases, third-party online stores (such as BigPond Music, for Telstra customers), while serving as a replacement for the Sony Creative Software "Media Manager" applications, used by the PSP (PlayStation Portable)/PSP Go, Sony Ericsson and Walkman products in the past.

Cool your jets, Alexander. Kotaku loves to print unsubstantiated rumors. Absolutely nothing is confirmed yet.

And right now the answer is probably no.

    Later, maybe.

And what is true is that PSPgo in Japan and US has a price cut today which does mean something , right ?

I wouldn't be surprised if the rumors are partially true. I mean we just saw the announcement of the 3DS and its release date. Sony doesn't want the PSP to seem like its going to lose, so of course they want to play the 1up game. Usually that means a hurried announcement.

It would be interesting timing though, to announce the PSP 2 only a few months after the full release of the 3DS, rather than before.

To be honest, I prefer the PSP. I understand why the DS is huge, and I'm excited for the 3DS. But no games on the DS have entertained me as much Peace Walker and Monster Hunter on the PSP. So I'm really looking forward to a next gen PSP.

It's a perfect entertainment platform rather than a great gaming machine , what makes me crazy about PSPgo is the use of digital distribution which makes the go smaller and sexier !!!

I bought PSPgo at the price of $200 , but it'll surely get a cut at Amazon and Walmart soon . So if someone wants to buy one , just wait for a few days ... 8-)

Of every console out this generation I know that the PSP has clocked the least amount of time played by me. Maybe hovering around 40 hours... That's because of Crisis Core and FFT. The thing about the thing is that it's very uncomfortable for me to play. I always get a sore neck, or my hands start cramping... I can't really enjoy it.

I hope they end up with a better handheld next generation. If it looks almost identical to the PSP then I'll just not buy one and save myself the money. :(

Yet the exact same digital distribution didn't make the PSP-3000 any smaller. Maybe it's got a slower metabolism or something.

I remember a while back that one of the devs on the Mortal Kombat reboot 'let it slip' that they had a PSP2 'in house'. I think the original story was this one over here, but I'm not sure how much credit I'd give that. A lot doesn't add up - it seems weird that a developer would just blurt something like that out, particularly in such glowing terms under unprompted circumstances.

Really? I mean, I like the PSP plenty, but calling it the perfect entertainment platform is more than a slight stretch. Let's face it, UMD movies ate it hard, and the PSPGo is a rather silly waste of money, considering you were paying more to get less.

The only way id be interested in the Psp2, is if its cheaper for the amount of power, than the 3ds.

If its significantly more expensive than the 3ds.... it better be way more powerful.

I don't want them to release the PSP2. It is completely unnecessary, as the PSP's library is sort of weirdly reaching its prime, and hasn't really begun to decline yet.

How does a library decline? You mean that devs are still making high budget games for it, it's not relegated to nothing more than the yearly Madden?

Why would the library matter at all if none of it is selling? I think KH was its first top ten game in what, a few years?

    At least.

PSP software has been selling utterly horribly for over three years, with the PSP itself selling like crap for at least a year and a half. If nothing, we're long overdue for a new generation.

I'm not trying to be a douche, but this is the wrong way to look at it.

The other thread on this -- the one that got so retarded I had to leave 2 or 3 pages in -- had somebody claiming they wanted the PSP2 to be as powerful as the PS3, but portable. This was just... yeah. I'm not even going to go into how much such a device would cost.

There is a difference between portable gaming and gaming at home on your couch. That's why the PSP has failed to compete closely with the DS, in my opinion; Sony didn't understand that people don't want to watch movies on the tiny little screen. They don't care about super awesome processing power or a handful of exclusives (no matter how desirable they may be). They want portable gaming, which is its own thing, at an affordable price, and they want something fun.

Sony has just seemed so out of touch the last few years. They've been desperately trying to seize on the demographic of people who want the biggest newest fastest thing with the most CPU clock cycles per second no matter what the price! The PS3 finally came into its own after the price dropped.

    If there's a PSP2 on the horizon, I hope it's fun.

But in fact if you have a PSP , you don't need a MP4 or MP5 any more . And maybe you will not need a cellphone in the future since SONY released the news that cellphone functions might be added to the new generation .

Gaming is the most interesting entertainment while it's not the only one . Some people do like listening songs , watching videos and surf the Internet wherever and whenever , PSP can meet all of these needs and also it's definitely better than an iTouch for it's a perfect gaming machine , maybe not much better than but still not worse than the NDS .

Unless you have CFW and install a custom browser where you avoid the ram cap and surf much faster. It's at least a hell of a lot better than surfing on the DS that way.

But really... leave portable internet for your smartphones. That's what they're there for.

I am on my second psp and I would buy another if this one broke or something happened to it. The device is realyl great, and I would gladly buy a psp2. The only caveat is that I would not buy it if it uses the slide up design that the Go has and this mockup has. Honestly, one of the things that keeps the psp in constant use in my house is the ability of my son to watch movies on.

How the heck could they really provide a sturdy, durable case with that design? I know the DS is pretty tough, but a psp with a good hard case is really great as well. This is just something I want and am worried that I won't get.

I love my psp. Its been my most used console since the summer started. (I've put more time into it than my 360 and wii put together) That said I'm going to be real cautious about buying a psp2 simply due to the fact that I think the 3DS + iPhone is going to bury it and and I'm worried that developer support will drop off fast.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

So does Sony want to repeat the PSP vs DS battle with PSP2 vs 3DS or do they aim big and will target Apple (iPad)?

Only time will tell. When Reggie kinda-sorta positions Apple as their real competitor it would be funny if Sony fought with 3DS yet Nintendo acted like PSP2 doesn't even exist.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tries to take on both Apple's Ipad and the 3DS.

The psp2 can be a great thing, but at this point it needs to be more than an updated PSP.
