So after about a week or more of effort, I finished a mob spawning tower machine. It was a big learning process, but I got it working.
I did cheat a little in finding the 0,0 chunk, using MincraftGPS. I figured if I was going to put in that much effort, it had better damn well be in a location that actually worked. That chunk was part of a huge cliffside, so I built up the upper half and carved away the lower half. The top is the sky limit, and the collection point is just below sea level. It turns out a fair amount of items, but I doubt it's turning out thousands of items and hour like some people are getting. I still have more gunpowder and arrows than I know what to do with and that was only an hour of testing.
Things I would do differently:
* I built the outer wall first and then built downwards for each platform level. I should have started at the bottom and built the trap section first and added platforms going up as I went. It was a monumental task and I didn't see any results until I was done. This also led to problems of having it work too soon, so I had to keep everything brightly lit until I was ready to turn it on, so to speak. I started at the top and started knocking out torches, and only a few levels down mobs were falling into the trap. Once I got to the bottom it made it difficult for me to finish the last few levels because skeletons were shooting at me often from down below. I died several times just trying to seal off the trap room.
* I deployed all the waterways in the trap before the lava. This caused me no end of trouble trying to pour the lava without getting knocked into it. I died several times until I wised up and removed the water and then did the lava and redeployed the water.
* I thought I needed 3 buckets for each 3x8 waterway. For some strange reason, about half them (seemingly random) would flow 9 blocks instead of 8 causing waterfalls. The waterfalls would wreak havoc with the waterflow on the levels below and would back up the system. I was trying all sorts of things to fix the problem like knocking out sections of the floor, and placing ladders at the end of each waterway. Finally I discovered I only needed to buckets (one on each end, none in the middle) which covered 3x8 and stopped on its own. The water/lava flow rules are weird.
* Build a 3 deep moat around lofty work areas. If you fall you only splash. I can't even tell you how many times I died to a slip and had to make a mad dash, sometimes in the dark, back to my work area to get my stuff before it disappeared.
* I should have used more dirt instead of cobblestone. It's easier to get and works just as well.
I'll see if I can post some pics later. It's not pretty, but it's more like the monolith in 2001. It still looks intimidating.

I am setting up the experimental Underdark map for exploration again today. Hop on for a while if you feel like spelunking in a ridiculously large cave system.

woo, thanks Vic. underdark is a really fun mod to build with.
I saw somewhere in the last thread or two instructions on recovering a save file after a crash, can anyone redirect me? Has happened thrice now and can't find a solution.

Hopefully it will be when the performance issues are fixed and monsters are in at least!
Edit: I must admit that I am really disappointed that Notch did not only add no new features to SMP but he even crippled it. Ah well, let us hope the next update is faster.

I don't think that was his intention.

Holy god I found a cave complex so big that exploring it partially increased the size of my save file by almost 3 megs. I went through like four stacks of torches, found a full stack of iron ore and a quarter-stack of gold and more coal than I could carry, killed so many creepers that at one point I thought I had to be around the corner from a mob spawner, and eventually had to go back when my health got low.
No idea how I'll find my way down to the unexplored portions again.
Also: I'm still playing the version from when it was free for a weekend. The portals sound awesome, but apparently there are also a shitton of associated bugs. Worth it to update now, or better off waiting until some of that gets fixed?
Started a new world yesterday to check out the update and have a fresh canvas to craft on, and I'm pretty hyped on it. Good biome variety with neat natural structures, including a tower of sand in a desert area with a stone crucifix in it, perfectly proportioned and everything.
My spawn is in a tree. This makes me extremely happy for some reason.
Ghasts give me a hell of a time, so I've just built cobblestone tunnels far away from my first Nether Portal, and came out in a very nice island area, so I've been making a over the water beach house. It's so nice to get away from my Frozen Keep.
That said, I'm always staying away from my frozen keep because I can't freeze water anymore, and one wrong torching will turn all my hard work into liquid sad. Is this a bug, or is falling snow/freezing just not in my old biome anymore?
I harvested a shitton of clay and then to save space put them into blocks and now I'm attempting to break it back down to blobs of clay so I can bake them into bricks.

How does one make block > blobs again?
does placing the block and breaking it not work?
haven't tried that as the last time I did that with a combined block it just vanished and I got nothing. Needless to say I was pissed.

usually you just put the block into the crafting window and it spits out whatever it was made of, at least thats how it works with smelted bars, never tried with clay
The BorderLands mod works properly. You can't warp out of it and it blocks you from expanding further.
The server is lagging a lot though and I'm getting errors I don't understand. If you could Ein I would like you to just take a look at it.
EDIT: Also some people wanted to know what the server specs were because they were interested in seeing if they could host it.
The server is running on Win 7, with a 2.8Ghz Quad Core and 4GB RAM, 20MB/down 3MB/up connection.
The server lagging is likely what we've been dealing with on the G+T server since the patch - a lot of Notch's changes fucked things right the hell up, so that most servers can't carry more than 6+ or so people at a time without catastrophic failure.
For reference, the server lagging likely has to do with the lighting bug Notch left in. It's location-specific, meaning that in some places it will cause some serious trouble. For example, try getting everyone away from the holes in the world to the void, and I would almost guarantee that the server won't lag as badly.
I can tell you that it's not a hardware-related thing. Server's pinging fine, and I have the same problem even when I play on G+T's server from the machine hosting it. Lag in that scenario should be impossible, but the lighting bug still causes hangups regardless.
Let me know about the errors.
Weird errors in the console log are usually the product of mods, which I understand you're running a number of.
Started a new world, playing on easy instead of normal. Walk outside and this is what I see just after the sun comes up:
8 spiders & 2 creepers?!
I'm really not crazy about the increased spawns. I liked it the way it was before. It seems like too many mobs are spawning to be able to go outside at all.

I've got a little hut on an island I recently found. I pop outside in the morning, spot a spider, fill it full of arrows. I go for another one, and it had about one hit left to go before this fucking creeper just slides in from the side. I make a run for it, trying to shoot the thing down (on a MacBook with no mouse!) and another one shows up!
Of course I did the proper thing... and ran into the ocean like a scared little girl.
(I also got destroyed by one after opening my front door in the morning earlier. It doesn't help that I play with sound off. )

The difference is, with sound you know you're about to die.
I, too, find the new spawn rates less fun than the old. I'm not a leet minecrafter, and even on Normal it was annoying to spend half of every day just clearing out the grass in front of my house. And when I'm mining, I don't like being on edge even in explored parts of my cave.
I do want some challenge, but I think it's better if the player has some level of control over when and how much challenge they take on. Right now it's not a matter of choosing where to be on the risk/reward slider, it's more like "want any reward? prepare for all risk all the time!"
So dyndns.org decided to delete my reforwarding stuff, but thats been fixed, everyone should be able to get back on. Please remember if you have any issues, you can get info on twitter for the server info, or contact me on steam.
