Medieval Total War II Steam compatibility

So I've got a disc copy of Medieval Total War II, and Steam has the Kingdoms expansion for $5. If I buy it on Steam will it run all fine and dandy with the disc copy, or do I have to do something special to get them to work properly with each other?

Or is this just completely impossible?

You cant buy an expansion on steam without owning the base on steam.

So, no, you cant use steam to buy the expansion for your non-steam version

Shouldn't you be able to enter the CD Key into Steam and activate the game, download it and then go ahead with the expansion. Thats what I did for some of my games that I have on disk which are older than Steam itself.

Very few games (usually only Valve games) allow you to activate on Steam

    Google for a list

except for a few rare exceptions, the only cdkeys that can be put into steam are from games that use steam in some capacity.
