My first 'First Contact' was a triumph.

I'm making a note here, huge success!

I can hardly overstate my satisfaction.

First Contact missions are fun until you get something really weird. I had a race a few days ago who universally loved Bajoran sweets and had adopted a popular Federation sport as their main passtime, but then the third diplomat went on for two text pages about how their culture was better than everyone else's and how they don't allow outside ideas to corrupt their superior minds, and even apologized for making my crew feel bad with his pervading superiority.

I really didn't know how to resolve a couple of the questions on that one.

    That is an awesome link.

You got that far? I realized I was infinitely out-nerded at section 1.2, and I'm the guy who made a 6 paragraph post in the last week detailing exactly why the TOS Enterprise could have most likely survived a direct hit from the anti-ship mode of the second Death Star's superlaser.

Though he's definitely more Trek nerd than nerd in general, or he'd never have written any of the stuff in 1.4. An Alcubierre device would accomplish everything Star Trek warp drive does in much the same way it does (with the small catch that you can only generate and collapse the warp bubble from the outside, and the larger catch that in order to build an Alcubierre device you must first build an Alcubierre device), with the same lack of relativistic problems.

That is what you guys get for reading anything beyond what I linked. I know I didn't.

Edit: I found that while googling for "Captain Kirk flowchart" for laughs.

I was hoping for something like:

Is it an unidentified ship - Hit it with a Proton torpedo

Is it a hostile alien creature - Hit it with both hands

Is it a hot yet strangely colored babe - Hit it like it owes you money!

I remember reading some comments from the writers and crew that worked on the tribble episode of DS9. Their main worry was that it wouldn't be believable to fans that Kirk would fail to notice and subsequently hit on a woman like Dax mysteriously appearing on his ship.

Thanks for the teaming Docshifty and Noirhero... It really does make a difference when fighting in a team... As a whole I was able to earn 17 emblems tonight by doing the Breen patrol once, the deferi patrol twice, the Eta Dailies one (Except distress signal, which I did twice), the Salvage Dispute daily, (One you get from 10 computer ship fragments) and one round in Ker'rat...

As a whole I am now up to 155 marks of exploration... Tomorrow I will try to do B'tran RA twice, and B'tran VA twice, which will give me 16 more marks of explore after conversion...

At the rate I'm going I should be able to get a Neula by the weekend... Which, all things considering, is a pretty impressive feat me thinks...

    Go go Vice Admiral!

Now here's a question...am I wrong to be underwhelmed by the Intrepid retrofit? I mean...I'm trading an engineer console for an ensign science officer and the Ablative Generator, which seems really situational and not-so-great, especially compared to cloaking or saucer separation.

I've been in science ships through my entire levelling process, but now I'm highly tempted to move to a cruiser or escort...

Engineers moreso, but tac officers aren't entirely rare. Ship wise, cruisers are everywhere, even escorts are pretty under represented. Any of the six captain class/ship class combos work, but your ideal niche is a bit less obvious with some of them.

How do Science officers do in escorts? I'm in love with escorts in space but prefer my science officer on the ground. I don't have near the energy credits to afford and outfit an escort at this point, but I may use my commander freebie on one in a couple levels.

Actually pretty good. They don't have the extreme spike damage a tac officer can pull off (you're not going to be able to pop four cooldowns and get quantum torpedoes critting for 30k), but sensor scan is a major resistance debuff.

every so often..somehow those advanced phasers would miss..but oh man..when they did connect = instant death.

In the kind of one on one fights most of Star Trek consisted of before the Dominion War, there was usually a split second to lock weapons. Usually the target lock and firing were separate orders entirely. I always assumed those misses were the result of firing without that lock, by the time you waited for it, the fighter could be out of your firing arc. That would at least give some reason to even have the things. Even the Defiant and Birds of Prey didn't do well in fair fights on their own, they needed numbers and fleet support to do their damage.

Though, I swear half the Federation seemed to go into combat with their shields down during the Dominion War. It wasn't just fighters getting instantly destroyed, Miranda and Excelsior class ships got parts blown off in one hit. There were even times when a Galaxy class ship would take two shield hits and the third beam would cut clear through their hull in the first few seconds of a fight (and usually blast an undamaged Miranda to hell at the same time).

The two fighters that usually followed the Defiant around, though? They took all kinds of beating and stayed in the fight. Because apparently they had their shields up.

Uhhg, don't get me started. The TV show could never decide about shield use, although, to be fair, the show always ignored/changed the tech when it suited them. They wanted a bunch of ships to blow up, so they ignored shields. One episode they treat the ships like giant battle-ships trading blows, the next they are like fighters one-shotting each other.

I'm a TNG whore, so I probably want to start out with a tactical officer on a cruiser

this is not a terrible combination, is it

    tell me it's not

Not it isn't. You can fly any class of ship with any class of captain. Some are even more fun if you mix.

Also, get a referral from someone and apply your cd key to that! That way the person gets bonuses.

I'm at level 10 now, hoping to hit 11 tonight and get my first real ship. I'm an Engineer and I want a cruiser, but I want to outfit it like an escort. My starter ship has 1 disruptor turret, one disruptor cannon and a torpedo. Lots of fun so far, not much circling going on though...I'm curious to see how it goes, since the conventional wisdom seems to be to outfit cruisers with beam weapons for circling.

So essentially, I want a DPS cruiser. I suppose where I would get into trouble is my slow turning...hmm.

Your maneuverability goes up as you level and start training more Cruiser captaining skills, as a % of the older tiers are added to your current bonuses when flying the appropriate ship.

The difference between a LTC's cruiser turn rate and a commander's, ignoring everything else but the primary flight skills, is pretty dramatic.

So, what does auxiliary power do? Is there a guide somewhere for power distribution? I'm assuming putting power into speed also boosts your turn rate? Right now my power distribution looks like some stairs, weapons high then stepping down for shields, down again for speed with aux the lowest.

Also, I'e already wasted a ton of officer points because I didn't realize when you change a skill or replace a bridge person you lose those points. That was a bummer.

I think they said Aux boosts your turn rate but from my experience it's a really small boost, or the description tooltip was completely erroneous.

Aux tends to boost Buffing, Healing, and CC skills. Scramble Sensors gets dramatically more effective, for instance, at 125/100 aux instead of 50/100 aux.

So stuff like my Emergency power to shields might be buffed by Aux? Hmm. I'll have to play with it tonight. I like how the ability description is dynamic based on your power levels, that helps a lot. I never thought to check that for my healing stuff.

Is it hard to respec if you are a Vice Admiral and you decide your life in a cruiser has been wasted? Or hell, can you have more than one ship/officer loadout on the same character?

You get several free respecs on the way to VA, or at least I did, and you have plenty of merits to respec even if you don't.

I have a bay of ships at Sol. Each keeps their weapon and item loadout discrete from one another, so their phasers and such don't end up in my bag if I switch off of one. So you can have plenty of ships.

Officer assignment is pretty dynamic. You can do it between combats if you want. I don't think there's a 'save officer assignment' button, but they usually jump into the same 'slot' on other ships. (Ie. I have a single ensign tactical BO slot on my science ship manned by Garkan, my klingon. If I switch to an escort with a single LTC tactical slot, Garkan will be in there. If there's a LTC and Ensign slot, Garkan will get stuffed into LTC, and your next tac officer gets assigned the ensign by default.)

That's how I remember it working, anyway. If you generally like your dudes where they are regardless of what rank, there's very little swapping of crew around.

In my experience, officers tend to shuffle strangely when you swap ships but its a one time thing, and once you've spent some time building up your officers you can put them where they go in 2 seconds on the assignment tab.

Its also very possible to swap officers and weapons fits on the fly -- it only takes a moment, and you can do it anytime you're not actually in combat. On my escort, I have 4 tactical bridge officers who are set up so that I can make four different packages; I move pretty regularly from an all "strike" package for things like cruisers and escorts to an all "spread" package for fighters and frigates, and I have two in the middle that lean in one direction or the other.

In team play, its even possible to break contact and swap BOs in the middle of combat. You can do it in single player PvE as well, but its a pain to break contact and rarely worth the bother.

The only reason I bought it this time is it was only $10 and that included 30 days of gametime, so I thought what the hell, I can cancel. I also learned in another mission that when a giant blue cloud pops out of a ship you don't want to fly though it.

So I decided to give this a shot after hearing good things about it in the general Star Trek thread in D&D, and have enjoyed it greatly. The sound effects and visuals are close/spot on enough to really kick in the nostalgia of looking forward to TNG each week during its original run.

Ship to ship combat is fun, and while the ground combat kind of sucks so far (though my gear is all like level 2 shit, so it feels like it takes just about forever to kill some things), I do sort of like that there are missions that require you to pay attention and answer questions about things you've found/read. It's not a big deal and I'm sure long term players are kind of sick of it, but as a "Oooh, another quest in WoW, blah blah blah, what do you want killed" player in previous MMOs, requiring a little more attention to detail isn't a negative for me. That might be a little strange.

I'm up to Lt.10, and hope to hit Tier 2 ships tonight, partly because as previously noted, the Miranda pretty much sucks. Given that I primarily solo so far, should I snag an Escort first? My captain is an Engineer and I'd figured on going Engineer/Cruiser for 'tanking' (can you tell I played a Rogue in WoW for 4 years? I remain terrified to this day of becoming attached to "dps" classes, lest I prove to be a dime a dozen and left begging for spots in groups), but by the way the first 10 levels have played, I seem to spend a lot of time just doing my own thing. Survivability is nice, but it hasn't saved me terribly often. I guess what I'm saying is, does that soloability of the game stick around through the higher levels, or would I do well to snag a Cruiser first and get accustomed to that? I've made a little cash on the side, but not enough yet to get more than one starter ship, can't wait to be able to have several kicking around for use as needed.

Also, thanks to the Fleet. A few upgrades from the bank really helped make the earlier levels fairly painless. I tossed back in some replacement gear I found while levelling, which will hopefully help some other new players/alts as they start their journey.

I understand why, and that you should be trying to escape to recover, but its a huge handicap. Honestly I almost never use the skill. I am actually getting 200 marks of explore to get the Nebula instead. You get a better engineering slot and a universal Ltcmdr slot I think, which allows the ship to be more versatile in combat. If I could go back I would have gotten the galaxy refit. The saucer seperates, so when combined with photonic fleet and fleet escort, means you can have 5 pets fighting with you at one time. Go in. Blow shit up.

When done, instead of warping out, click above your minimap and do 'change instance.'

Go to one with a high population (probably in the middle of killing shit).

Kill shit with them. Complete another third of the quest.

Repeat again. Finish quest. It's repeatable with like a half-hour cooldown from picking it up before you can pick it again and yields tons of XP. Biggest downside is that you get fuck-all for material rewards, though.

Didn't see anyone answer this. You do get more as you rank up, and more ship slots. Without buying any I think you come out with 10 officer slots at VA - I have three tac, three engineer, and two science officers in my crew with two slots empty. Don't remember how many ship slots. At VA I think I had to decommission a couple since I spent both the RA lower and upper tokens plus picked up a defiant retrofit. I'd also bought a runabout along the way, which may have contributed.
    figured as much

kind of a bummer, but it's just a gun

It's actually not a bad gun. Before the proton rifle came out, sniper rifles were my weapon of choice, and it has a slightly stronger exploit attack than a standard mk II if I remember right. But, mainly, it ignores line of sight and can be fired through walls. Makes things a bit easier in the lieutenant grind since you can pick off enemies from cover until you get a science officer's healing skills trained up.

But, like Doronron said, there's lots of level scaling weapons available. At lieutenant 6 you can start the Devidian series which will give you a total of three ground weapons that scale to your current level. One of them, the Proton Rifle, is a LOT of people's go-to captain's weapon because it's borderline overpowered if used effectively in PVE.
