Especially now more than ever, going around running over dudes and shooting up the place would make absolutely no sense. I wonder how the overworld is even going to be treated.
Call me strange, but I find myself wondering what weapons we'll get in this game. Late 1940s, would love to see some classic guns like the Garand. Thompson should be a given.
But you're playing as a cop and I feel they're going to keep it authentic, did the cops use Tommy guns back then?
The Thompson was used by American law enforcement both before and after WWII. I don't how much action the game will have but I'm fairly certain the Tommy Gun will be in the game.

Not sure on the Granad and Thompson, but the BAR is definitely in there. In the video during one of the crime scene clips, you clearly see them hold up a rifle with M1918A on it. So at the least we'll see some Bonnie & Clyde style.

That doesn't mean you'll use one, though. That just means that at some point that gun is evidence for a crime.

Bribing corrupt cops.
Honestly though that's a good question, I'm now curious as to how they'll deal with it.
Also I've been tossing up whether to get into some appropriate reading material to get myself in the right mindset for this game, any recommendations?
Appropriate viewing material would probably be better, how well do you know Film Noir?
This is the kind of attitude that limits rockstar's writing. Believe it or not, it is worth studying things outside of film for reference and research.

And your attitude is unnecessarily presumptuous and rude. Believe it or not, this game is based upon and a reference to a film movement, not the literature they were influenced by.

I think it's a valid criticism based on Rockstar's track record with GTA and RDR
B-b-b-but it's got all the classic signs of a great cover! Blue, orange, protagonist holding a weapon at his side and kinda looking around, some motivation in the background (dead girl) and possible enemies scheming on the other side! Classic good/evil mystery!
It's cool, it only took them about nine months to release the two costumes they didn't use for preorder bonuses on Red Dead Redemption. I'm sure we'll get all that extra content by 2013 at the least.
I hate this industry.

Don't worry.
I'm sure the preorder bonuses will be up for an overpriced amount of money sometime in the future.
Fucking shit. I preordered at Amazon, and I don't want a goddamn suit that does things.
Maybe Im just old fashioned, but I hate pre-order bonus' that give you skills and health and shit and essentially unbalance any game. Dead Rising 2 was my most anticipated game last year, and I sold those pre-order bonus' so fast, because I don't WANT to be able to take more damage - Im assuming you built the game around me taking the APPROPRIATE amount of damage without pre-ordering from Best Buy.
I want that Vice Case, I want the game day 1, but I fucking hate GameStop and have a shitload of Amazon credit.
Motherfucker.
And if Red Dead is any indication, it's not like we can hope for DLC. The War Horse, Golden Guns and GameStop outfit (Dead Aim? Something like that) haven't ever been available.

This is not how you reward people who preorder games, Rockstar. This is how you piss them off.
Yeah... I love noir, but seeing that just put out the moxie, put it out in the hard cold rain to think of better days while the lights go out.

The Red Dead stuff is only items though, right? These are entire goddam cases. If they put them up for purchase, there would be a much higher incentive to get them.

I agree with this completely, although I am a total sucker for having tons of options for costume changes in games, gameplay bonus or no, so limiting that pisses me off from the word go. But then to cut out actual ingame mission content, guaranteeing that no matter where I preorder, I'm missing some of the game? Makes it really hard for me to not consider just adding it to my Gamefly or Goozex queue and saving that money for a new pair of shoes.
All I can do is shake my head. Business "tactics" like this really just frustrate me. And they wonder why people pirate games. Treat your customer better, and by better I mean fairly, and you'll see it come back to you ten-fold in the form of more NEW sales and more profit.
Any pre-launch story content (ie missions) specifically removed from the game so it can be used as leverage for competing pre-orders and/or Day 1 DLC is the most underhanded thing they can do.
Bah. So frustrating.
Edit: I feel the need to clarify though. I love the games Rockstar makes. The GTA series, and especially the more recent RDR have to be amongst the most entertaining games I've ever played. And LA Noire looks to just continue the streak. Am I still going to get the game, yes. I had it pre-ordered weeks ago not even thinking there would be pre-order/DLC exclusive shenanigans. My comments above are merely me expressing my frustration for the way the market is going in general. Selling incomplete games in order to milk ACTUAL paying customer out of more money. Oh well, it's late and I have some Archer to watch.

Their reasoning is simple....you're going to buy it anyway. As long as they keep making a product you want, they have you over a barrel. There's simply no downside to it for them, because every publisher does it now. Sure, you could not buy their game, and that hurts their bottom line a little. But they're banking that you'll buy it anyway, and even if you don't shell out money for the DLC later, some people will, so it's a net-win for them.
Capitalism. Ain't it a bitch.
Locking out actual quests/gameplay as retailer-exclusive preorder bonuses IS a new level of suck though. :?
I am going to place a wild guess that the missions will be available as DLC sometime down the road.
Rockstar typically doesn't do that, but here's hoping.
The bonuses have all the worst qualities of preorder bonuses (store exclusivity, entire missions taken out, Gamestop disparity), but they're also pretty underwhelming. I want to get mad, but I'll live without another dapper suit or one more case in a game sure to be packed with content.
Slightly unrelated, but the War Horse bonus for Red Dead Redemption was awesome. Loved that horse to pieces.

Somebody already beat 'em to the title.
I'll add that to the list of what I'm looking in to.
I asked about books because:
a) I saw this list on IGN which piqued my interest in the first place and I wanted a second opinion as to what is good.
and
b) I want to get back into reading as a hobby again.
Although that's not to say I won't check out the non-book suggestions, a bit of everything sounds good.
I also like Connelly but I wouldn't put him in the category as the previous 3
Both translations are correct (noir and noire) so it's an aesthetic choice
I think it's a valid criticism based on Rockstar's track record with GTA and RDR
Of course Rockstar isn't developing so

Yeah, it is crap.
My thoughts exactly. At least RDR was 'Hey, have a shitload of red!'

Can't wait to hear about the bonuses, I'm hoping it's better than RDR's limited edition.

Good news! Unless you preorder and buy the game 4 times, you'll be missing out on cases, stat-increasing outfits, and even an entire minigame!
At least the comments tend to hover around "Fuck you".
At the very least, I want to be able to spend a couple extra bucks and get everything. But no.
