I have kind of a specific problem. When I download images from Firefox on my Mac at home, it doesn't generate a thumbnail image, just the generic "image" icon. Internet Explorer does it and Firefox on my PC at work does it.
I download a lot of images as reference for my artwork and having to tell them all apart by file name doesn't work. I have an older version of Explorer on my Mac which I use for image searching but it would be much more convenient to just be able to use Firefox instead of switching back and forth whenever I come across something interesting.

If you're using finder to look at the images en masse... you can hit apple+3 and it turns it into a preview'ish mode; not quite thumbnails though.
EDIT: Oh wait, i found it.
Open up finder and go to the folder your images are in. Then at the top there should be a cog, click it and choose view options. Now check the box for "Show icon preview" and voila! Woo..I kind of wanted it too... ^_^
