Caffeine sources that don't taste like pickled tires
Does anyone know of a healthy source of caffeine that doesn't taste bad?
I know I shouldn't drink soda, what with the 150+ calories/can. However, I like my sugar with either a bit of tea, and I can't stand non-mocha coffee.
Yes I get plenty of sleep, and I'm gonna try exercising on the Wii Fit Plus. I'd just run, but it's cold as hell here in Ohio and I can't afford a gym membership.
Any ideas as to how to get this night owl productive at 8:00AM?
Also if you're skipping breakfast, don't, that should wake you up.
This. If you're skipping breakfast or just skimping. Try a frosted cereal, or even something with marshmellows if you don't mind that they're all marketed to kids. I've found sugar just as good for getting up in the morning as coffee, as long as I don't need to count on that instant rush.
Coffee, Tea, Yerba Mate, or caffeine pills are the only healthy sources I can think of.
Obviously I'm going with the assumption that you'll drink the coffee black, and the tea without any additives like milk or sugar. Yerba Mate is supposed to be healthy and pack a good jolt of energy, but I haven't managed to get used to the taste. Once I got used to coffee and tea without additives, I can't imagine using anything like sugar anymore.
Personally, tea would be the tastier alternative, as there are hundreds of varieties to try out and find the one you like. You might try some green tea(IMO most types taste like grass), black teas and their varieties(most caffeine), or stuff like Oolong(between green and black, very tasty). Other varieties like white tea don't really have properties that would work here, but if you're going for a breakfast drink, some sort of black tea would work very well. Possibly with milk, depending on the tea.
Also, pop tarts, diet sodas and the like are pretty far from healthy, considering that you expressed concern for healthy source of caffeine, so you might want to drop those too. (marshmallows for breakfast? Holy shit.)
Fruit is good, gives some sugar and other stuff. I'd look for a good müesli instead of frosted cereal or whatever. Also, I don't know how it is in Ohio, but a good rye bread will give you energy until lunch, as rye releases it slower than the usual wheat bread. Try to look for a proper rye bread and not of those shitty mixed breads with a miniscule amount of rye.
For reference:
Shitty rye bread:
Good rye bread:
The darker the bread(as long as the color is not artificial or the bread doesn't contain molasses) the healthier it tends to be. Even a shitty rye bread is better for you than a normal wheat bread. Or at the very least go for whole wheat.
I can give some more directions if you want, unless I'm going in a completely wrong direction with this, seeing what the other posters are recommending.
If you like yogurt, a nice granola parfait is pretty easy to make. Fruit+yougurt+Granola is both tasty and was my kick of choice for long school days.
If you want to be even healthier! you can try to work on your early morning nutrition. In any case, the pills give me the lift I need to start my day without the Starbucks price tag, and eating breakfast well tends to give me the stamina t6o perform throughout the day.
Also if you're skipping breakfast, don't, that should wake you up.
Bowen speaks truth.
Pills. I take 200mg every morning with my decaf tea to get me going once I'm at the office.
Just don't double-dose/overdose as you will, I promise, regret it.
DECAF TEA? That's a thing? Wouldn't it be better to drink normal tea and cut down on the pills?
Doesn't decaffeination generally make stuff taste worse though? Decaf coffee is an abomination. I'm not sure how tea can take it, since the flavor is less robust.

It's green tea, it has a small amount of caffeine. Really, when it comes to November onward, I'm really concerned about having something hot to guzzle down my throat. I drink coffee in the mornings for caffeine.
The recommended amount of 2 patches has a little less than caffeine than a red bull spread out over 5 hours. It's just enough to keep me alert and focused without getting jittery or on edge. Plus I don't have to keep drinking __ to keep from crashing.
as people have said, yerba Mate tastes kinda like drinking wet hay...but if you can acclimatize yourself to it it does give a much better kick than coffee..and wet hay still tastes better than coffee imo
I know there are a lot of people saying it's some sort of super caffeine and whatnot, but I just think it's tasty and it wakes me up.
I must be making it wrong, since it turns out bitter as hell every time I make it, and I just can't choke it down. I drink my coffee extra strong and with nothing added, but I can't handle the Mate I make.
Guess I should make it like I make tea, instead of the traditional way. Too bad, since I liked my bombilla and the mate gourd.
There is. But it's not so much a "high" as in, "Dude I'm totally wasted", but more as an elevated energy level. Which is why it's better to eat complex sugars than simple sugars. You get less of a crash effect, being your general feeling of grogginess and malaise.
Ever had low blood sugar? The effects are similar when you come down from an elevated blood sugar because of taking a shot of liquid sugar. Complex sugars don't spike your insulin levels quite as much as simple sugars. Which is where the sugar high comes from.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
But seriously, I was coming in to say this. You've probably only had bad coffee. If you've tried to drink Folger's black there is no wonder why you would hate coffee. Try seeking out a reputable coffee house, tell them that you currently do not like coffee and that you want to start liking coffee. If they are worth their salt, they should be able to get you a drink that you enjoy that you can work your way down from.

Unless you are diabetic, sugar has almost zero impact on your energy levels. A healthy person cannot have low blood sugar without something else causing it, poisons...ect.
unless the basic functions of the digestive system are fundamentally misunderstood by modern science,
1- what you eat affects your energy levels
2- blood sugar levels fluctuate based on digestive activity
The human body regulates blood glucose pretty effectively. It's possible to briefly get high blood glucose by eating a large quantity of carbohydrates, but it's difficult for a healthy non-diabetic to get low blood glucose without first running into other major malnutrition issues or otherwise short circuiting normal metabolism. The idea of a sugar crash really is an American thing (which was parroted by my grade school teachers, mind), roughly analogous to the Korean belief in fan death.
I used to hate coffee until I had good coffee! Most of the coffee served in the united states is pretty dreadful, it needs to be freshly roasted and well brewed to be tasty. However getting that is a pain so I pretty much trained myself to tolerate shitty coffee, and now I can drink old, cold coffee black with no sugar. Coffee is supposed to be pretty healthy by itself. It still tastes like death to me but I just plain old need the caffeine. What I did was gradually ramped down from skim milk and sugar coffee to no sugar with skim, then finally black.
You can also try espresso, that way you only have to swallow a small shot of miserable tasting caffeine. But if you do put effort into coffee (don't use old beans, grind it yourself, buy nice coffee) you'd be surprised at how good it tastes.
I'm pretty much the walking dead in the mornings so I find anything without a significant amount of caffeine doesn't do anything for me. Black tea brewed strong has a decent amount of caffiene in it but I usually prefer it with milk and sweetner.
also starbucks makes a line of esspresso with cream in a can, and a low calorie version. Even the low calorie version probably isn't that good for you though, but they're reasonably tasty and convenient.

It's just you that has a fundamental misunderstanding. Blood sugar levels are only mildly affect by what you eat during the day, even then the effects are short lived. Yes your blood sugar levels do fluctuate, but a person generally cannot tell unless they have something wrong with them.

This person speaks the truth, fresh ground and brewed coffee tasted nothing like the coffee you can get in most stores.
I think coffee is just an acquired taste for a lot of people. It was for me. I used to hate it but I had a job in my late teens that required being up at 6 every morning and they had gallons of shitty coffee ready all day so I just drank it because it was free.
Now I absolutely love coffee. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning. Literally. I would probably just lay in bed for an extra hour each morning if not for that delicious hot cup waiting for me to stumble to the kitchen.

I'm not really clear on what we're arguing anymore... probably time to stop derailing

Yerba mate is great. Less of the edgy / anxious feeling that you'd expect from coffee, great energy if you want it, and no insomnia later. Tastes great, but you can add honey and cinnamon if you like.
Also amazing is, as has been echoed here, fresh-ground black coffee.

Try some grainy toast and peanut butter.
They cast a shadow like a sundial in the morning light. It was half past 10.

is delicious! and works! (something like 5 calories a pop!)

Buying this. I remember having it during high school, and it was awesome.
I'm also gonna get off of pop tarts, and move to apples. They taste better than pop tarts anyway.
Thanks to the rest of you as well, you've been helpful as always!
