well, people that were 1200, have been carried into the 1400-1500 area, so, they still suck, but they've been carried up there. you may not have been, but a lot of people in the solo queue have.
There are probably a few cases like that, or people who just have too few games to establish an accurate sample size of their skill level, but in general I think it's just that everbody has bad games. This is something that people don't necessarily realize enough, even the best player in the world is going to have games when he makes godawful decisions and plays like garbage. 'Cause we're human. And, because it's such a snowbally game, you don't even have to play poorly the whole game to have a terrible game, sometimes all it takes is making one or two really bad decisions early and then your opponents exploiting it and not making any mistakes to let you back into the game.

So last night I tried out Shen because I've heard a lot of great things about him. I played a couple of custom matches with bots (as I feel if I'm going to try a new champ, I better at least try and get an elementary understanding of their mechanics first). I do have to say I really like him, it helps that I've always loved "tanks" (Prot Pally in WoW, Black Orc in WAR, etc). He definately benefits from a huge amount of HP, since it increases his survivability and damage (through his passive), and he can always benefit from other defensive stats (armor, magic resist, HP regen). My main question, though, is how much is he affected by Ability Power? Only reason I ask is because AP can increase the damage of his Vorpal Blade (Q), and I think it adds to the amount of healing done by the lifetap component. It also appears that AP would increase the shield value of Feint (W), and I'm not sure if it increases the shield of his Ultimate. If he does benefit from AP, obviously it's a tertiary stat (at best) and you would want to avoid any AP item with mana / mana regen on it. But, isn't there an item that's HP and AP?
I do suppose, however, that most games won't last long enough to get an item like that after his major priority items, but it's nice to know whether or that helps him.
HP soo much more important than AP on Shen. For Shen item efficiency, it is sometimes best to simply grab 2 Giant's Belts and sit on them to finish later. 1 should be a Sunfire (to help you farm) and the other a Warmog's. An early Heart of Gold will give you income, armor, and HP. ALWAYS by Mercury Treads. There is no exception. There are like 2 champions with zero CC/slow. And of those, they grab red buff or a Frozen Mallet anyways.
There are a few ways to play Shen. Aggressive or Supportive. Your item order will reflect this fact. For supportive, a 10 minute Aegis of the Legion is a good start. You'll be taunting and keeping your carry alive as much as possible as well as tanking everything. Aggressive Shen is MothaF***ing Shen. Go read the guide. The items might be out of date, but the attitude still stands.
There is one thing to note tho about these 2 styles of play. Support Shen stays in the fight. He does not really leave. Aggressive Shen goes in and out as he pleases.

I -really- want to unlock Udyr. I don't have attack speed runes. With any luck the christmas ones are cheap. So. How to build him? Is laning Udyr viable? I hate jungling.

Fuck yea for shit ass team mates, bunch of fucking morons. I love how the loss is my fault because I'm an 0/0/0 Karthus who couldn't get ult kills because my team mates were too busy dying and not getting enemies to a low enough health for me to blow them up. No one would come and gank mid or other stupid shit. Thank you assholes

Laning Udyr is possible but it's pretty difficult for him to be effective and he can have a rough time against lanes with lots of harass. Jungling is definitely the route to go.

I've never seen a memorable laning Udyr, but I've most certainly remember many screaming ghost/bear Udyr tearing out of river bushes as I overextend.
I'm afraid of losing all the time. I don't know whether I'd be higher Elo if I played Ranked more but things are going well so I'm just going to keep up this little bit at a time thing for now.
Regarding jungling and needing MIA calls: There is really no reason you should need MIA calls as the jungler. None whatsoever. Frankly, to play this game at even an average level you should be able to do that little bit of multitasking to watch the minimap as you kill jungle creeps, except perhaps very early on if you're doing a very specific, high-risk route.
Compared to laning, jungling requires so little focus. In fact, I usually like to ping/call MIAs for my team as much as possible when I'm in the jungle since I know they need to pay attention to their screen much more than I do.
Having good map awareness, in addition to being really easy when you're the jungler because of the lack of concentration required on your screen, is also really good because it helps to always be surveying opportunities for ganks or free dragons for your team.

This is incorrect. Shen has the ability to be wherever the hell he wants to be because at a moments notice he can join the team. He can safely push a sidelane and farm while 4 hang around mid. If someone pulls off to deal with shen then he either backs off or ports mid and takes a tower while they don't have 5.
a) Warmog's is fantastic on Shen because of its synergy with his passive. Mitigation is really good on Shen as well because of Feint, but I max Feint last, so by the time I have it at a useful rank I will have armor/MR anyway.
b) Warmog's levels up on kills and assists now, so it's super easy to fill up quickly just by being involved in every gank/countergank/teamfight and killing creeps in between.
c) Shen isn't as bad for farming as people say, it's really easy to actually get last hits with him and like Talith mentioned he can farm safely while super overextended and still get to his team for a fight.
My typical Shen build is Warmog's, Atma's, Force of Nature (if the game goes on long enough for that, it's not uncommon to have something like Warmog's, Merc Treads, and a Chain Vest at the end, which is fine).

He can get last hits reliably but he only has Vorpal Blade and his passive so I can't imagine him being able to burn through a large creep wave quickly
That's true but he can just sit there and farm forever because he has a low CD built-in blink (and no mana to worry about), an innate healing ability, the ability to jump into any fight if his ult is up, and of course great natural toughness as a tank.
He farms by attrition.

Jungling soloQQ is always a crap shoot - it heavily relies on your team to defend you when needed, and to set you up for a gank (stop auto attacking lanes and just last hit, and to goad the enemy to overextend. If you don't have ganking opportunities you won't get ahead. If you aren't getting help when needed, then you'll just have to go lane. Which sucks.
So just hope you get lucky with your team.
E: I always want to jungle as Irelia, but fuck me if I can get a good team comp or competent players. Whenever there's a jungler on my team, I usually go out of my way to help them, since they can very well be the key to winning, and I wish others would do the same.

I don't agree with the Atma's. Force of Nature sure, but a Trinity Force makes Shen a force to be reckoned with late into the game. Randuin's can be traded out for a Thornmail or Guardian Angel, depending on the enemy team composition.

I don't think I've ever build any kind of damage item on Shen since he's a tank and is there to take as much damage as possible.
Usually I'll go something like Heart of Gold, Mercury Treads, then Aegis or an early Randuin's Omen. Pick up a Giant's Belt and Negatron and beef up accordibly to the opposing team's makeup.
When four people join and instantly lock in their champions (all solo champions and all of them horrible in a duo lane) with no tank, no support, and no jungle I know we're in some deep shit.
Yep. Final score: 9-30.
Please you fuckers on my team uninstall this game and never play it again.
I have strong suspicions that they were a premade, also.

Sweet, from a game where I AFKed cause I got pissed that our Warwick came up and stole blue buff from me while I was Karthus when he didn't need it to a game where I play as Jungle DPS Udyr and go 10/0/11. Last Whisper is sooooooooooooo nice on Udyr.

Laning Udyr is viable, it's just that he can do much better in jungle.
Besides, a bear stance Udyr with ghost on rushing out of the bushes to gank is a damn scary sight.
