For context, 2 players who were traded last year for 2nd rd picks were Javon Walker and John Abraham. This year 2nd and 7th round picks might get you Willis McGahee, Randy Moss, or Lance Briggs.
The Patriots have shown interest in dealing for Randy Moss. A source said Bill Belichick believes he could motivate Moss to play and that he'd have the locker room support system to back him up, thanks to high-character veterans like Tom Brady, Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison.
I'm not exactly sure how I should respond to that, disbelief? shock and awe?, outbreaks of gut-jiggling laughter?
I think aliens have re-abducted Belichick and replaced him with an alter-ego. It seems much the same reasoning that Reid had when the Eagles signed TO, sure we can handle him, we got good guys like McNabb, Trotter and Dawkins. And we all know how well that worked out.
On another note, Eagles have been really quiet (even more than usual) on the free agent front, they have only resigned 2 would-have been FAs and let Lewis go to the 49ers. I'd really, really like them to bring in a LB and resign Stallworth, but I'm not holding my breath for either one. Though, no one seems to be knocking down Stallworth's door, so maybe there is hope.

The New England Patriots traded their 2nd and 7th round picks in the 2007 draft to the Miami Dolphins for WR Wes Welker.

And to top it off, the Pats will likely give Welker the same $38M contract that Deion Branch wanted last year, which led to him holding out and getting traded.
I know if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt at this point it's the hoodied one, but I don't get this at all.
The Pats don't need Briggs. They have Adalius Thomas. Woo.
Also, Willis McGahee is an asshole without the talent to back it up, and would undoubtedly become an even bigger asshole once he realized that Lawrence Maroney would be getting most of his carries.
I think Welker is going to be a damn good receiver with a decent QB to get him the ball. Is he a #1 guy? No, but I don't really think that Branch was either. $38M would definitely be a bit much, but this team desperately needs a stabilizing presence at WR. Brady was able to maintain career-average numbers despite a substandard receiver corps. Pioli and Belichick aren't perfect, but I think they are smart enough to learn from their mistakes.
That said, I'm really excited about the prospect of Randy Moss in a Patriots uniform. Everyone is talking about how he's lost a step, but I do feel strongly that a move to NE could be a successful one. He's never played on a team with decent leadership; he was coddled in Minnesota, and trapped on a monstrously dysfunctional team in Oakland. Is he going to win the citizen of the year award? Of course not. But saying that he's "uncontrollable" isn't really fair, since no one has ever really tried.

I didn't mean NE should get those specific guys, but those are the caliber of players available for what NE gave up pick-wise. Welker is a solid player, but he's not of that caliber.

I think that Belichek and the Patriots know what no one else seems to be able to figure out: that the NFL drastically overvalues receivers.
The fact of the matter is that the NFL, and the various other pro football leagues, are full of guys that can run fast and catch the ball. And that once you get above a certain level of skill, the cost of improving at the wide receiver position far outweighs the benefit of doing so. Tom Brady's numbers prove it: put him behind a good offensive line and he'll put up career average numbers throwing to an entirely new group of WRs this year.
What will the Patriots be paying for Moss? I was surprised they wanted him, given that he's declining in ability and has a relatively big contract.

hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

New England needs more than just career average numbers from Brady this year. The AFC is still loaded with both established teams (SD, Indy, Balt) and up and coming teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville. You have to figure both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh will have better showings this year too.
Moss would have given the Patriots a deep threat to loosen the defense a little. Guys like Welker, Troy Brown, and Reche Caldwell are all underneath receivers, which could have led to defenses loading up to stop the run. That's part of the reason NE got Doug Gabriel last year. They ended up going with Donte Stallworth, and aren't really a player for Moss anymore.
Incidentally, that Welker contract ended up not being the rumored 6 years/$36 million, but a far more reasonable 5 years/$18 million, which makes it a much better signing.
So, what are the 'Hawks gonna do about Tight End now that Stevens is pretty much gone as a possiblity? Think they could trade D Jack for Graham in Denver?

I have no idea what Denver would want for Graham (I'm more of a baseball roto guy). Whether or not Seattle should pursue him would depend on what they wanted out of the position. Graham is a damn fine blocker, but he's got stone hands and isn't particularly fast or aware in the passing game. I had high hopes for the guy in NE back when he looked like he had a shot to be the second coming of Ben Coates, but that never panned out.
EDIT: Also, I'm doing a stupid dance over how good the Pats are going to be this year. WHEEEEEEE!!!

The Patriots have been so aggressive that one NFL observer has a theory: Bill Belichick is firing all his guns at once because he wants to go out on top. The folks at ProFootballTalk.com say the Pats' spending spree has all the makings of a run at one final Super Bowl before Belichick packs it in as a coach of the Pats.
Interesting theory, probably not true, but interesting none-the-less.

Who would the Seahawks do good picking up then? Tight Ends arent exactly the most popular position, so I wouldnt know many good ones... I doubt the Chargers would part with Gates...
I wholeheartedly agree. Theismann was singlehandedly the reason why i gave up listening to announcers on MNF (even worse than the sideline reporters). He always says the most inane things.
Jaworski has been a good analyst, it'll be interesting to see how he transitions to the booth.

Funny you should mention Moss...

Suck it, Indi.
Hadn't heard this. Hm. I think I should stop paying attention so I can find out all the bad news all at once.

We've been blessed by the football gods.
I'm sorry.
Jaworski does all the Bucs preseason games, he's fairly good if a tad too talkative. I'm excited.
You've seen them together on the Monday Night PTI? I'm getting excited just thinking about it.
