Figuring out HD Audio

I just got a new receiver - Denon AVR 391 (Yes, I'm aware of the advantages of the 591, 791, etc... but this was in my budget and did everything I want it to do so I'm happy)

Anyway, I'm using a PS3 slim for blu ray hooked to the receiver via HDMI.

I've been doing some research to make sure I'm getting the best possible audio I can. The Denon has a light when it is decoding TrueHD blu ray audio which I am not getting to light up.

I am however getting a digital PCM audio in 5.1 at 48khz which I think is just as good, if not better, then the TrueHD codec audio but I'm finding it hard to be sure.

Researching online tells me a lot of stuff but I just cannot find a simple, clear cut response and I figure someone here can tell me.

If your receiver supports multi-channel PCM (5.1 PCM sounds like it does) then you are getting HD audio (assuming your PS3 audio is configured correctly). The reason the True-HD or DTS-MA light isn't going on on your receiver is because the PS3 is doing the decoding. All your receiver is doing is amplifying the signal.

That is what I thought. I was just looking for some reinforcement.

Did you change the audio settings on your PS3 after you hooked it up to the receiver? Does the Bluray you're playing have a TrueHD audio track?

I don't have a PS3 slim to try out myself, but if you want the light on the AVR to go on you could probably set the PS3 to bitstream and have the AVR do the decode.

    Yes it has TrueHD.

I checked the audio settings on the ps3 and it is set to playback a multitude of settings including the TrueHD.

I don't care about the light, I just want to be sure I'm getting the best audio I can get.

Can you disable PCM and see if the PS3 will use TrueHD instead?
