Nintendo 3DS approximately three hours to five hours if you play soft
Nintendo DS when you play our games for about 5 hours to 8 hours
The battery life varies depending on the brightness of the screen ※.
※ The approximate battery life. May be less depending on operating conditions.
I guess we won't really know until we have the thing in our hands, but that sounds ... kind of shitty on the Nintendo spectrum, but comparable to an iPhone or PSP without the extended battery. I'm hoping switching off the 3D gives it a good battery boost.
I'm still placing a preorder on the launch unit later this month, motherfuckers! But seriously, the battery news is kind of a downer.
3-5 hours probably at max brightness and with the wireless on, DSi is 4-6 (I think) on max, so with the brightness toned down (max is retina searing) and wireless turned off it should be OK. I'm not worried although it's obvious battery life will be shorter.
Edit: DSi 3-4 I stand corrected.
As was later pointed out on GAF, the DSi's spec sheet lists 3-4 hours at the highest brightness, so it's not necessarily that bad, or at least not that much of a departure. Essentially we'll have to try it out for ourselves - they tend to underestimate on purpose.

Possibly, but the note specifically mentions it could be lower under certain conditions.
I'm guessing this is at an intermediate brightness.

This was the case too with the DS, some game consume much more battery than others, that's probably what they're referring to. Of course that I'm just assuming they're talking about max brightness, because that's what they always do if memory serves.

Do we know yet if the 3DS will have the on-the-fly brightness adjustment like the DSi and XL? I'm assuming so, which will help with battery quite a bit. And yeah, I know that Nintendo tends to be pretty realistic with their specs on battery life, but it is still a bit of a shock compared to the eons I can go without charging my XL or GBA Micro.

I'm pretty sure most of us are going to be playing the 3DS rock hard.

The actual Metal Gear Demo and them talking about it did not have too many specifics.
He seems to be talking about specific features now, like a system where your 3DS "speaks" to other 3DS systems, the 3D camera and other features. Has not said anything about any of it being beneficial to Metal Gear 3DS, just general talk. I might have missed what he said about the Camera, but he said something about using that for something. I wonder what that other sensor thing he was talking about was.
I think he said the camera will be used in MGS, but don't hold my word for it.
Edit : The comments are hurting my brain
Edit -> Summary:
- Dude loves his job at Konami, says the team is very professional and a delight to work with, some of the best in the industry. Dude made Gradius 3.
- The 3DS is a developer's wet dream, so many features outside of the 3D tech. 3DS's talk to each other and expand information. This won't be used.
- He did not personally work on the Naked Sample
- Metal Gear Solid 3DS is essentially Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence expanded. There will be more of an emphasis on making the jungle believable thanks to the depth. The jungle, characters and models in the environment will feature larger polygon counts than the PS2 version, as well as texture depth : Bump mapping, specular highlights and better colour palette.
- Metal Gear Solid 3DS will take advantage of the Camera, but not the other features at this time ( might have mis-heard )
nintendogs + cats (3 versions)
Winning Eleven 3DSoccer
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
Sengoku Musou Chronicle
Tobidasu! Puzzle Bobble 3D
Ridge Racer 3D
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle
Nintendogs was 4800 yen. The others seems to be somewhere in the 5xx0 range, up to about 6000 yen.
For the record - DS's standard price is 4800 yen.
Kinda lackluster, hope NA launch is better. I'll still pick it up day 1 regardless of launch line-up since I have a feeling this is going to end up like the wii and be ridiculously hard to find for several months.
Well this is a problem because I do not want any of those games... and that will make it hard to justify the purchase of the system.

Yeah, I was hoping for more info, but there wasn't much outside of a tech circlejerk. Was hoping for info on multiplayer or interest in making more Metal Gears after this, or at least more game footage outside of the Naked sample.

They could release the 3DS with a launch line up of a shoe in a bucket and I'd still buy the 3DS and play my DS games on it till something good comes out.
That battery life is a bit off putting, but I'm sure if the price is right and Zelda and/or MGS3 are there at launch I'll get a 3DS right away. At least we already know one bullet point on the back of the 3DSlite box, I guess.
The battery life issue is really making me want to wait for Rev. 2 to see if they can get that fixed up...which is probably what I'll do considering my DS backlog could easily take me into 2015 if I wanted it to.
I wouldn't call it a mix between Zelda and Sin & Punishment if that's the case. Where's the Zelda if there's no exploration? Kind of kills my interest if it's pure action. I was kind of hoping they'd show something that ties it back to the original Kid Icarus.
