I have a fondness for Mickey games from the 8- and 16- Bit SEGA classics <3.

I liked the one on the NES as well.

That said I was actually kind of doubting if the character appealed to the early generation compared to us older ones.

World of Illusion has a special place in my heart.

edit: oh wow, didn't notice that about NFS. Criterion deserve it.

As for GT5, it has definately been profitable for sony, but with the sales they've seen outside europe, sony has to be asking some difficult questions. For the insane budget GT5 had, they could have funded 3 or more "AAA" titles with much higher combined sales. I'd guess that with GT6, polyphony are going to start seeing some stricter oversight from sony.

Eh. I'm sure a substantial portion -- possibly even the majority -- of Cataclysm's sales were digital, and hence not counted by NPD.

It outsold the individual PS3 and 360 sales of BLOPS, but if you ad all BLOPS sales together it beats Just Dance.

Just Dance 2 was also heavily discounted for nearly the entire month of December and EVERY non-gamer parent with a kid had that under the tree this year.

Hell I think my sister bought 3 copies alone because it was like 30 bucks everywhere. One for her family, one for her sister-in-law's family, and another for some friends. It's crazy how huge that game is in the elementary school set.

You seem to be underestimating the sheer force behind the "3rd parties don't sell on wii". Marketing budget almost never factors into that argument when people bring it up.

It says new physical retail only at the top of the chart. I'd guess there's not much verifiability other than Notch's word for something like Minecraft, or even Cataclysm.

Yep, and it sold mostly on word of mouth (i count the non-enthusiast press in this).

The Wii as a platform is still mostly dire for third-parties, but certain content can seemingly sell quite well there. Most of them seem to be moving to Facebook and mobile these days though.

360 and PS3 owners love shooting people, sports franchises, and cloaked killers.

Wii owners love dancing and platforming. Third parties would do well to take notes on these things.

    Wii - 2.36 million
    360 - 1.86 million
    PS3 - 1.21 million

Clearly Joystiq was being smart when they assumed 360 being second MUST have implied that PS3 was first.

Hmm... three of the top 10 sold in 2010 came out in 2009 - NSMB Wii, Wii Fit Plus, and MW2. That's impressive.

    From plufim's link:
For the second year in a row, U.S. video game sales posted a decline, down 5.7% to $18.6 billion in 2010 from $19.7 billion in 2009 and $21.4 billion in 2008, according to a report released Thursday by the NPD Group.

    Ouchie.

Edit: Poster from GAF claiming that DS has surpassed PS2 in North America. Quite impressive if true, and well-deserved. Also, does anyone have NA sales stats on the PS2? I'm curious to see how the Wii is doing in comparison in terms of time after launch. I knew the Wii was ahead, but I'm curious if the gap is still widening or if the decline in Wii sales have caused that gap to close.

Edit 2: Also very impressive - 360's yearly sales.

    2006 3,893,839
    2007 4,618,606
    2008 4,735,400
    2009 4,770,700

    Also from plufim's link
Sales of Nintendo's Wii, however, suffered a 38% dive to just 2.36 million units in December, down from 3.81 million a year earlier. Sony's PS3 also declined, albeit less precipitously. It sold 1.21 million PS3s in December, down 11% from 1.36 million.

With the exception of the Xbox 360, declining console sales will put pressure on manufacturers to lower the price, particularly for the Wii, which sells for $199.99 and is rapidly losing steam, analysts said.

"The Nintendo Wii business looks increasingly like a gift purchase business, which means they will have to have a price cut in order to sustain it during non-gift-giving seasons," said John Taylor, managing director of Arcadia Investments.

Wow, that all seems like a bit of a leap. I remember when YoY% was just being used by Sony as a last desperate plea to show that they were in fact awesome pre-PS3 slim. It's a great statistic but I think it's getting a little overblown.

This total consumer spend on games content in 2010 represent sales that are flat to down by as much as 1 percent when compared to 2009.

DS is still the god king.
"For the month of December, the Nintendo DS was the best-selling hardware system, achieving an install base of over 47 million units sold in the U.S., which now surpasses that of the PS2."
"The Kinect was the best-selling accessory item for the second month in a row, following its release in early November."

"For both the month of December and for the whole year, Point & Subscription cards grew the most in unit volume vs. 2009. This is a retail reflection of the growing importance of digitally delivered gaming content."

    Any numbers for games yet?

    Edit:
"The Nintendo Wii business looks increasingly like a gift purchase business, which means they will have to have a price cut in order to sustain it during non-gift-giving seasons," said John Taylor, managing director of Arcadia Investments.

Estimated total 2010 sales from GAF:

    NDS - 8.56 million
    WII - 7.07 million
    360 - 6.76 million
    PS3 - 4.33 million

Analysts still assume the Wii is still doomed, of course.

I'd guess it missed the top 10 by a factor of two at least.

Now that the NPD groups all SKUs together, you'd need a mega-hit for a single-platform game to make the annual top 10. While ME2 may be one of the best games of the year, it was far from being one of the best selling games of the year.

What I meant was that the #10 game (NBA 2K11) probably sold twice as many copies as Mass Effect 2. But I'm starting to think I was wrong about that. Last we knew, ME2 sold what, around 1.5 million copies on the 360?

CODBLOPS is still going strong, though I'm a little surprised out outsold WoW, even considering the double console. Just Dance is an absolute beast. Epic Mickey did much better than I thought; maybe now people who say third parties can't sell well on Wii will knock it off. Though probably not really. I'll also point out that a certain person who predicted DKC wouldn't sell because he personally doesn't like the genre/price point was two months' worth of wrong.

360 got quite a bit of lift from Kinect, Sony very little from Move even though Move is allegedly selling. No Move titles anywhere near the top sellers either. Again: who is buying those things?

Remind me, what were some other December releases that didn't do well?
