Alienware TactX mouse setup

I've had the mouse for a few months now and it's fantastic, but I'd like to be able to customize the side buttons for games. Right now, the games all think that the side buttons should do exactly what the scroll wheel does. I don't like that.

In the Alienware software, I've tried setting the side buttons to "Generic Button," but that doesn't work. I then had the bright idea to set them to "Page up" and "Page down" and then set those buttons to what I want in the games... but that doesn't work either.

It's like the side buttons are being linked to the scroll wheel no matter what I do, and changing the function of one automatically changes the function of the other. This is what my mouse settings in Control Panel look like:

One of the reasons I bought this monster of a mouse was to be able to utilize the extra buttons in games, but alas it's not working as I had imagined. Help please!

Edit: My mouse is basically a G9, but Alienware puts its own cover on it.

Hmmm... from that screenshot, it looks like you used to have a Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse. Maybe Microsoft's driver software is overriding Alienware's. In any case, I'd try getting rid of IntelliPoint.

I completely forgot that IntelliPoint were installed drivers. I got rid of that, but I'm still experiencing the main crux of the issue, which is that games think the two side buttons are Mouse Wheel Up and Mouse Wheel Down. If I bind a side button to crouch, for example, it says "Mouse Wheel Up," and both that button and scrolling up will crouch.

Well I've got a G9x, my side buttons are set to "Generic Button", and everything works as you want it to. I just set whatever I want the button to do in game.

I also have options for "Generic Button 1", "Generic Button 2", ...etc. Not sure what those do. In any case, I'd say it's worth trying to reinstall the drivers for your mouse.

I use the G9 and this is exactly how mine is setup. However, with this setup, I have found that some games don't "recognize" the side buttons when I try to set them in game.

I realize that this is not quite the issue you described and I don't know if this will fix your issue but it's something to try.

What I've been doing lately, is using a gaming profile in the mouse's software and mapping those keys as "Keystroke Assignment". Then I have the mouse software setup to recognize what game is launching and it switches profiles on it's own.
So basically I'm mapping the keys in the mouse software before launching the game.

Beware of clicking on that picture link. I did and the av8scan virus tried to install after the picture was loaded. Hooray for imageshack!
