The 3DS and gaming in the third dimension

Nintendo of America announced an official release date and price for the 3DS at a press event today. That date is March 27th, and the price is $249.

It will come in aqua blue or black.

And these are the release titles:

Pilotwings Resort
Madden
Dead or Alive
Super Street Fighter IV
Nintendogs + cats
Steeldiver

Reggie said there will be 30 titles available for the device by early June.

There is a lot of interesting features that I will copy and paste in a quote from Ars Techina
The game card slot on the back will accept both 3DS and DS games, and the 3DS will come a 2GB SD card and charging cradle. A home button under the bottom screen will allow players to pause whatever they're doing and change applications, and a 3D slider lets them set the depth of the picture.

A light on the top left corner will communicate various statuses on the 3DS—for instance, green means a friend is online, and red means the battery is low. The front-facing camera above the top screen is 2D, and two cameras on the 3DS's back allow for 3D pictures.

The StreetPass feature will allow 3DSes that move past each other on the street to grab each other's Mii avatars to populate a virtual public area. The feature will also integrate with games, allowing characters to fight or exchange data.

The first console dedicated, or rather marketed to, 3D gaming is coming in 2 months. PS3 has had 3D capability for a little while (if you have a 3D TV) and computers can also do 3D gaming (again, with the right guts and peripherals). I remember trying 3D Bad Company 2 at PAX East last year and getting a headache. I don't know if the 3DS will solve that problem (it does have a slider, as mentioned in the article), but it just seems off to me. Maybe my eyes are too old for this shit.

I do wear glasses already, so the prospect of wearing glasses on top of glasses is always an annoying one.

I eagerly await the day when I can purchase prescription 3D glasses.

Also I played the same Bad Company 2 demo at PAXEast and thought it was pretty sweet. The six monitors created a really weird paned window effect that I could see bothering someone though.

If the 3DS is as good as I hope it is me and Nintendo will be sweet hearts again.

But that whole thing with the women chained to them was really weird and gross.

I just know my brother will by one of these so I'll just wait to see what his is like. I seriously doubt I'd buy one even if I liked it because it would majorly go to waste.

I hope it works though because I can't wait for 3D advertisements. Here's your juicy burger right in your fucking face.

At E3 they had demo 3DS units brought out by about 15 blondes all wearing large belts with that had a cable attached to the 3DS.

I'm excited for this release and will probably get the black one.

I can't wait to see how many games attempt to incorporate 3 D's into the title.

Dead or Alive is exempt because they probably incorporated at least 3 D's into the game.

They weren't wearing anything too revealing, from the picture I just googled. Its a good way to prevent someone from stealing a prototype?

I need that dinosaur fighting game. I need it yesterday.

Also: I think $250 is a bit much, but I'm sure I'll break down and buy one of these when the Layton games start rolling out.

I've never had the urge to buy a normal DS so not really bothered with this.

I'm interested in 3D tech as a whole though; I'll be interested in getting a 3D TV once they're cheaper and standardised a couple of years down the line.

Yeah I had thought I read somewhere that these were going to retail for $300

But even $250 is really high for a handheld (in my opinion)

It was more of a coloteral for a loan for $90 I gave to someone 5 or 6 years ago He still has not paid me back nor have I seen him since that weekend
Yet I bought games for it and play it

The handheld factor is that when I'm home, I already have a PC, an Xbox, and other sources of entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I have some DS games that I love and am extremely glad to have played

But in the end, I really only play my DS when I'm away from home, or possibly on the can, so I can't see spending $250 on a new one unless there are a significant number of games that I really want to play. I'm interested to see if the 3DS titles are going to cost any more than a typical DS game, though.

When the nerd has been intrigued by the bait, there is a small window of opportunity. You must flash the nerd before he becomes enthralled in the game.

WARNING: If you fail to flash in time, he will refuse to leave the lure for some time, making it impossible to attract other nerds.

I wonder if it'll be like the DS where a couple of games use the gimmick but most just use it for a special status screen.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot more than a few games that use the touch screen. You probably just don't play them.

And it seems like you would have to play into the gimmick in order to make a 3DS game.

I played a lot that did, they are vastly outnumbered by the ones that don't use it aside from the stat screen.

Elite Beat Agents was one of the few that really made use of it to its full potential.
