3.1 "Surround" System

So, this is just a quick question, aaand, since I honestly wasn't sure where to put it, either here or in Tech, I flipped a coin.

I currently have a Denon AVR 1911 receiver and 2 Definitive Technology 8020 tower speakers as my HT set-up. It sounds gorgeous as-is, and I'm happy with it. My room is also not anywhere close to ideal for a 5.1+ system.

However, through a series of events that don't really matter, I have a Definitive Technology ProCenter 1000 center channel speaker in a box sitting on my table.

Now, I know the mechanics of what happens if I were to throw a center channel into my stereo scenario (heh..)--my receiver would put out 5.1 and I would just lose all the sounds being directed to the non-existant speakers, sounds which are generally not particularly important to enjoying a movie, such as clangs and clinks and whooshes and all that good stuff. But in exchange I would gain a pretty hefty improvement in vocals.

However, knowing the mechanics is one thing, whereas actually knowing how the results tend to sound is totally something else.

So, basically, I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with a 3.1 system, and if the benefits of a center channel is greater than the loss of the rears when all is said and done.

The reason I'm asking is because I'd rather not open the box if it's just flat out not worth it, because I'd rather not burden a store with Open Box goods if I can help it. So yes, while I could just crack it open and try it for myself, I'd like to know if there's even a chance of me being happy with it if I do that before I do it. If that makes any sense.

Anyway, thanks in advance!

Your receiver should be able to handle the intelligence of going to 3.1 without dropping anything that you currently hear, but make sure to move your mains out wider to get the maximum effect. Just make sure to re-run the Audessy setup after you put the center channel in.

I thought audessy was capable of handling that, but was told otherwise. Good to know it can.

Unfortunately I cant really move the 8020s out further, as one is already at the edge of a door frame in the current setup. But that's at least something I'll keep in mind when I try to convince my little woman we need to redecorate. :p

Adding in the center channel added a ton of depth, and the receiver is handling it like a champ. Glad I asked here rather than listening to my manager. :P
