Oops. Death & Glory.
Of course, if there are particular pieces of that armor that you want for fashion reasons, then that changes things.
I wouldn't worry too much about getting the Marks of Allegiance for trading in for Marks of Triumph. You'd need 4000 of them to get the full set of tier 1 PvE, so it's probably faster to focus on the easier Duos and Alerts earlier on. Although, again, if there are particular faction gear pieces that you really want for fashion reasons, then that will change your priorities.
What is the tier for the Hawkman armor and weapons in the reactor room? Is that any different from the Hawkgirl suit?

I am very nervous about the prospect of paying for a subscription.
Edit: I need talk of upcoming features. I need talk of bug fixes in testing.

Sucks that the official channels are so poor at communicating this stuff though.
Ffff, why does this game have to hate my computer? Also... anyone else notice the 'ultamatum' date is the day RIFT releases >.>?
There is downtime at 7am US time every night? No message saying so? Just ... "Connecting to Login..."
I had to scrounge through the DCUO Forums for this info?
Now I vent.
1) Chat is fucking HORRIBLE. Honestly, how this system even made it out of Beta amazes me, especially for a game that has been in production for what.. 4-5 years?
2) The Launchpad for this game is junk. Huge bar at the bottom for news that only fits TWO patch/updates/whatever. It's not like the developers actually put any INFO there, but still. Horrible design. That is some rookie shit right there and unless they have future plans for that, it's nothing but wasted space. I would like to see the information that is coming up and then play my game. Look how big that welcome box is.. all it says is "Welcome to the launch of DCUO." Seriously? That's all you got? lol.
3) This game shows you how to punch stuff. Cool. Might want to explain the talent trees and the stat system a bit.
4) Where the fuck is all my buff information at? I use a skill that has time effect but I have no idea how long that time is, or when it wears off.
5) All those icons under my player bar. What the fuck are those? A star burst, some kind of target icon, random ones popping up. I mean, yeah, I get that not every single aspect of the game can be explained in a tutorial but a quick rundown would be nice.
6) All the power sets seem the same to me. Like, they all start with your basic shit, stuns, combos, etc, just tweaked a different way. I see no variety in the game. It might be different for PvP but that is really only a portion of the game.
7) The interface is kinda shitty, especially inventory. You have to rummage through all your shit to understand what the styles are, and what you need to do what with. The item icons are small in the inventory and hard to make out at a glance, it should be easy to see what I have going on in there. And on top of that, the interface lags.
8) Stats are not explained AT ALL, and the stat descriptions can be confusing as to which one you actually want to focus on.
All in all, I will say this. If you're a fan of DCUO and not so much the MMO world, you're going to have a bitch of a time to get into this game. It is clearly catered to those who have played more than one MMO and know the system fairly well because you have to know what you're looking for in order to find it when you play this game, otherwise, it does not make anything that is critical (ie: nearly everything) as obvious as it needs to be, or at least, accessible.
That being said, I REALLY want to love this game. I fucking LOVE the DC Universe. And the voice acting is just fucking awesome. The open world and the events that you can trigger for a challenge and quick and easy experience is great. The Vault is a good idea, all the little stuff is nice. It's huge potential. Huge. I just really hope they take the time to focus on the things that the player interacts with constantly so they can focus more on the game world and less on the other stuff.
same with power and stance description
right on the d-pad for buffs/debuffs? yeah there's no timers or descriptions i think.
power sets are similar for balance. never played a fighter i guess? everyone's in dps role so they're all similar. switch to tank/healer/controller and things change a bit.
Balance I get, but for 15 a month I want some variety. I don't see that at all. I guess it's just not worth the 15 a month right now is what I am saying.
*Shrug*
there's variety in the weapon sets, as well. and the travel powers. there's hurting, healing, status effects, and cc. um, what game has more than that, and what are these other things?
yeah i can see why you don't think it's worth 15 a month. easily, since I don't think i'll subscribe either. you have many points, but I felt like a third of them had a questionable opinion
I mean goddamn.
I actually went through the character creator for both genders and tallied up all the pieces that were original looking. That's maybe 2/7th's of all the costume pieces outside of face pieces, that aren't some form of ugly pseudo leathery spandex, or actually look like they were originally designed rather then just altering an existing costume piece slightly with cosmetic details.
Most of the actual original pieces are rare drops that occur in-game. Or have been removed since beta from vendors, meaning noone knows how to get them now.
What's depressing is that the canonical (And not canonical) NPC's in game show a remarkable sense of style that is true to the DC Comics. This is while all the "new" heroes are running around looking like they came out of nineties anti-heroes comics, or badly drawn silver age comics.
The epic armor pisses me off too, every time I see it.
Outside of one or two really kickass armors (The Superman epic armor is fucking metal. Literally. It looks like something you'd expect to see Supes wearing to a warzone.), most of the iconic epic armors are ugly as sin, and have nothing to do with the characters they're based on (Looking at you, Joker armor.).
They also seem to play up that "X-TREME" look that alot of MMO's go for with their end-game armor. That means lots of large shoulders, overblown details, and, generally, alot of flair that looks ridiculous as all hell when viewed in it's entirety.
All that being said, supposedly we'll be getting better costumes sometime down the line, as that was a planned feature that didn't make it into release. Along with a varied selection of skins, body types, and other useful stuff for making characters that aren't as generic.
Gameplay wise, the game is pretty awesome. The power sets are relatively varied from what I can tell. As are the weapons.
As far as stat focus, it really depends on what you want to do. I can't think of any recent mmos that "tell" you which stats you should focus on for a particular role. We're supposed to test different ideas, share results, etc.
The powersets (at least those I've played) are actually pretty varied. A good example is fire and ice. The weaponsets may be a bit closer, you either hit things or shoot them, but that's pretty normal for the genre. The combat itself is far more varied than other games by "how" you fight.
The starting costumes are limited, but what you gather as you play the game is pretty decent. I know on my main that the costume lists are long as hell.
I post this because I'm not sure what else you would expect that they didn't advertise? The social function is bad, they've admitted as such and have announced a fix. Supposedly there was a bigger issue late in beta that caused them to use this version. I realize not every game is for everyone, but I'd suggest the earlier poster at least try to look up the information (the server reset info is at the bottom of the launcher, and in the announcements on the forum).
2) Weapons/Stats. A little info in-game would be great. Obviously if you're into min/maxing the idea that one weapon set is more beneficial to a specific power set is important. All I am told when I make a character is that "Weapons effect combat." No shit. Power sets don't give you a hint of information, which one would expect, I mean a little bit would be nice. "Controller: This class tends to focus on DOM...etc." I'm not asking for a talent build and perfect stat setup, but a hint would be nice. I purposely walk into games blind because I like to see how helpful they are in general, and this one is a wild goose chase of information.
3) I don't really see the power sets being varied except for their role. I mean, I just don't. I can say I don't have all the pieces because I have not played every single power set to 30, but I have played the shit out of this game and I must say that it all feels... pretty much the same. Especially starting out. So much melee and all the combos are the same for each weapon set. I don't feel any different from one character to the next.
4) The way you fight is different than other games, but as a caveat to my power set rant, the weapons system is all very bland. Combos and such are a cool idea, but that doesn't make up for everything else. Especially since the physics in the game are clunky and there appears to be a reliance on the physics.
5) Costumes are fine, but at the end of the day I am more interested in what I can do in the game rather than how I look. I won't knock their setup, although I find all the costumes to be pretty "standard", I don't expect more from a comic book game based on all the DC stuff.
Downtimes: I don't see anything at the bottom of the launcher. Unless you're refering to the Support section or Knowledge base, all I see is chat downtime and cheaper monthly payments if I hurry.
I shouldn't have to scour the forums or the website for information that should be made available to me in-game. I pay a monthly fee to play the game and expect everything I need to know to come out of the client. I am not paying money to waste time surfing their website.
You're right though, not ever game is for everyone, and this isn't shaping up for be for me... I might look into CoH or CO again but if they polished this fucker off right, it would be fantastic. Especially the questing system, I love the way they hook it up. In fact, the questing system is one of the things that keeps me playing because I enjoy the voice acting and the storyline.
I don't really understand this. Maybe you've just been playing brawling/dual wield/one handed? Because so far I have Staff, Martial Arts, Rifle, Dual Pistols, Bow and Hand Blast characters and so far their combos are wildly different and have different effects. With my hand blast I have a nice mix of fast, quick hitting ranged beams and slow, damaging melee. Rifle is just a crazy beast all of its own with directional combos. Dual Pistols has you leaping all over the place, Bow is a cool combo of range + melee attacks... Yeah, they're all pretty different. Some of the melee sets might be a little samey, but there are only so many ways you can do melee.
4) The way you fight is different than other games, but as a caveat to my power set rant, the weapons system is all very bland. Combos and such are a cool idea, but that doesn't make up for everything else. Especially since the physics in the game are clunky and there appears to be a reliance on the physics.
This kinda goes to everyone talking about the costumes: have any of yall started to collect the briefings (blue ! marks)? I just started this on one of my characters, and from looking on the wiki, there are a lot of really interesting and exciting costume sets from that. While I agree that many of the iconic armors are gaudy, I'd say there's more than enough variety here to make some really amazing costumes. The costume contest thread on the PC forums has some really inventive and cool looking heroes of many different styles.
Unfortunately, while I agree with this, this isn't possible any longer with the MMO genre. Even with WoW, who recently retrofitted their low level experience, there is no way you can reasonably take part in the endgame of raiding and gearing without a large amount of outside information, either from reading third party websites or asking people in game who have read the information. It's really the nature of the beast.
I don't want this to come off as an attack or anything, everyone is totally entitled to whatever opinion they like about the game, and there are definitely problems with it. I just want to provide some counter-viewpoints. Speaking as someone who has played a shamefully large number of MMOs over the years, this game is fresh enough (reminds me a lot of PSO, actually) that I am very excited for its future.

Immolation: Instantly engulfs you in flames to damage nearby enemies.
Enflame: Engulfs you in flames to damage nearby enemies.
WAT? And they do completely different things. Immolation as far as I can tell is more of a reflect damage back for a few seconds and deal damage if they are REALLY close. Enflame shoots flame farther out and has no reflect damage portion. How is that reflected in their descriptions in ANY way?
I echo the sentiments about buffs. F3 or some garbage? I have some random buff on me, it lasts 3-5 seconds, I have to hit f3 and figure this out? Some kind of target icon? A starburst? Something that could be a bruise? A foot? In fact I went into the game and hit f3 while I had a foot and the bruise on me...said I had no debuffs. That's right, those were buffs not debuffs. Where are buffs? WHO KNOWS? In my quest to press all the F keys my game locked up and crashed. Around f10 and f11.
On another note, I made a stryker's island briefing map, as the fourth blue took awhile for us to find, and I didn't see any guides or whatnot at the usual places for such things.
This one was tricky. The scientist one took us forever to find. Didn't help that some were mislabeled.
Anyway, the dots are just rough indicates, to give you a general idea. From there, the rough descriptions below should help you find it. The green investigation clues are also indicated on the map, but they're generally not too hard to spot, so I didn't write up directions. If something isn't clear enough or if I need to make any corrections, feel free to PM me.
In order of appearance as you move through the alert,
Styker's Island: Lois Lane
On ground level, behind a big boxy object and some piping.
Styker's Island: Jack Ryder
This one is weird, because it's actually Lois that does the audio for it. It's inside the upper level overlooking office/security room place. There are no doors to the room to get in, but there is a broken window on the north side of it.
Styker's Island: Lois Lane
This one is also weird, because it's actually Jack Ryder talking. Located on ground level, on the southern side of some sort of bookcase-sized thing.
Styker's Island: Superman
Northern side of the second boss fight's room, on ground level.
Styker's Island: Scientist
This one is on top of a reactor type looking thing that's located in the ceiling of the room before the final boss. Oddly, there is no audio for it.
Styker's Island: Lex Luthor
This one is in the final boss room, on ground level just inside one of the southern containment hold cell area thingies. I think the southeastern most one, but I didn't make a note of it.
I was going to make a smallville one next, but I saw that someone on the officials forums has already gone through the effort. So either tomorrow (later today, whichever) or monday I'll try to make an Ace Chemicals map, as that one can be a bit of a pain, due to not being able to get all the clues in one run.
This isn't true, actually. Enflame says it engulfs you in flames to burn nearby enemies, which means it gives them the burning debuff + dot, which sets them up for other fire powers. You can see it here: http://dcuosource.com/skillplanner/
Sometimes you have to really read closely, but most of the powers have accurate descriptions, they're just not terribly specific. However, I have yet to encounter any that were outright wrong, and they give you the gist of what the power accomplishes.
Steam | XBL: Elazual | Last.fm
I can see the similarities with the melee weapons but the combos are normally different enough (aoe, stun, juggle etc) that they're not exact replicas. Personally I like martial arts and hand blasters as they are not ranged or melee and feel extremely different from the rest.
One thing that is starting to get to me is bloody gankers. I know that it is a sunday afternoon (saturday night in the states) and that is when all the kiddies are on that have nothing better to do but a gang of 10 lvl 30's (not to mention the solo gankers as well) hanging out at the docks in the east end of Gotham? 3 maybe 4 of you get to use one ranged attack on me then I'm dead. I hope that was a good for you as it was for me.
edit: In regards to Immolation and Enflame. Immolation has great synergy with flashpoint that results in the reflected damage, plus a knockback and the burning debuff. Enflame gives the burning debuff. I use Immolation and Flashpoint but I can also see myself using Enflame just for the debuff so it would only take up 1 ability slot instead of 2.
Also I quite like that everything isn't completely spelled out with numbers and stuff. With detailed description that include power cost, exact damage, chance of debuff percentage etc the min-maxers take over and it turns into WoW where there is cookie cutter builds that everyone uses. In a game like this there will nearly always be healthy debate over which skills are better since we don't have exact numbers and everyone will be talking from personal experience.
http://dcuo.mmorpg-life.com/tag/briefing/
i like your map better, so maybe you can just use this site's info to help you make the map
I like numbers. It's not always about the best cookie cutter build, but I like to know what does what and how much it will do.
Well, that site had no information on stryker's island, nor did the other usual place I check for such information, the official forum's blue and green thread. Thus I made the map, so PA'ers (and anyone else who manages to find it) won't have to run back and forth across the map searching for that last one like my group did. Unless they want to, that is. Sometimes, the search is fun! Other times, you just want to find that last green that turned out to be hidden inside some burning debris near where you fight Cheetah.
Then you really wouldn't have liked CoH, during its first couple years. It provided, well, probably less information about power details. Good thing for player-collected data and brawl indexing!
I'm pretty sure that even if the tooltips and descriptions don't get better, we'll see something similar with this game as time goes by. The player base will continue to dive in and test stuff out, and record it, and compare findings with others.
For example, Prehistoric Might (a might buff that Nature's Pterosaur Form can use) doesn't even show up in the F3 info. So it doesn't tell me how much it buffs for, or for how long. But I still know it buffs my party's Might by 180 (at previous levels, not sure if it scales, need to retest), for forty-five seconds, with a one minute cooldown, because I spent a few minutes to watch my character's stat page and time it.
Of course, not everyone has the time or the interest to test these things themselves (certainly, even those who do, generally only have time for a narrow focus). But some folks post their findings on the official forums, and luckily there's now a sub-forum for guides and such. And for those who don't have the time and interest to search and peruse through that, well, posting specific questions in the appropriate thread of one's favorite forum might provide some useful answers and feedback.
We can't do anything about your expectations, though, save for perhaps commiserating with you over a couple of your interface complaints.
I'll watch DCU and it could be a fun casual game, but nothing I would drop 15 a month on because I just don't see it being that in depth. Good beat-em-up, but nothing of MMO caliber.
So apparently Breakout no longer works for me. 4 different Arenas and not ONCE did I break out of a stun, knockback or any other control effect, in spite of me almost breaking my finger on the left Shift key. And yes, this was the case in Legends also, so it couldn't have been gear.
Is there an exploit i'm unaware of that makes control effects un-breakable? The key works just fine for anything else, but not breaking out of anything.
I don't think your experience is so much an exploit as it is glitch in the matrix.
Also: Can anyone tell me what the 200 meg patch I just downloaded was all about? I can't find any information on it.
Can I get an invite to the group?
Possibly stunlocked from an exploiter or hacker. You did have enough energy to do the breakout, correct? Might be somewhat related or the same as an issue I have a lot in PvP where my movement and action controls just stop responding even though I'm not stunned or held in any way. I'm literally control-locked.
I've been playing with different weapons for a controller (gadgets), trying to find something better than pistols for PvP. Hand Blasters aren't that great, primarily because the animation will occur but won't connect with the character unless you lock on. I'm trying a bow now, and maybe staffs later.
And I hate that I finally found a legends character I'm good at with Nightwing, and there's a glitch where he doesn't get cola or trinkets when you play him. So damn annoying.
you cry. that's all i do
