So I have been kind of lazy with music recently, about 2 years ago I started to broaden my musical interests...which ended up in me just listening to Indie Rock. Anyways I went to Korea for a year and got back in September, completely disregarding all new music for that entire time. Did I miss any big indie rock? I tried to pick up some of the big stuff like Arcade Fire and The Decemberists.
Now more importantly, I want to get more into other genres of music. I should start by saying that I hate most of what I hear of the radio, most rock on rock stations, and all country ever. According to itunes my most listened to music is Ra Ra Riot, The Most Serene Republic, TV on the Radio, Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, The Dodos, MGMT, Menomona, Beirut, The National. Stuff like that is what I listen to almost all the time, although I do enjoy The Protomen and Trail of Dead.
Now with that I want to listen to different music also, I was quite impressed by the soundtrack to Brutal Legend so I am going to use that as a starting point. I am not even quite sure what the intent of this thread is, I just want to see some music I might not have considered I guess. There is just so much music out there I am going to miss the majority of it if I just use pandora or whatever.
Also I was impressed by some underground rap I guess, but most rap to me is pretty boring and standard, not creative and not for me. I am not opposed to anything popular, just has to sound good.

Just going based on some of my likes, as well as stuff my GF likes (her tastes nearly mirror yours based on the above). Try some of these and let me know what grabs you and I can supply more.
KEXP - Music that matters is also a great podcast for finding new stuff.
Passenger for a little singer/songwriter awesomeness:
White Lies...have no idea what genre they are, alt-rock, 80ish sound? but I fell in love with them
Explosions in the Sky..."Post-Rock" (Just about everyone that gets put in that genre and half the people that listen to it hate the label post-rock but whatever. humans have a need to classify things. deal.)
Sigur Ros...absolutely no idea how to classify them genre wise but they are the best thing.
Mynabirds...kind of an R&B/slightly country kind of feel??
And finally I'll throw in Hammock for some ambient.
Track list is here - obviously check out those bands and particularly the albums the songs you like are on as some of the bands have been around a LONG time and have had their sound change over the years.

A lot of what you'll be wanting is frequently called NWOBHM (the older stuff... Judas Priest, Motorhead, Budgie, etc.) if you want to get all super genre specific or was heavily influenced by the NWOBHM bands, like the thrash stuff, etc. My personal favorite bands on the soundtrack are Judas Priest, Megadeth, Testament, and Children of Bodom although most of the bands on that soundtrack find their way into my playlists on a regular basis.
For some bands not on the soundtrack, but similar (primarily on the heavier end as that's what I really like) check out Exodus, Kreator, Pantera, Bonded By Blood, Fueled By Fire (their second album), Gama Bomb, Exhorder, Lamb of God, and Flotsam and Jetsam. Also early Metallica, obviously.
The skit on Blame Game is fantastic, too.
Big indie rock, hit up:
Wavves' King of the Beach
Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me
Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest
Jay Reatard died while you were gone, I think...if you didn't pick up Blood Visions, or his Matador Singles, you should. Especially if you liked the Brutal Legend soundtrack.
hey you stop reading my mind
and then writing them as posts

Sleigh Bells is a cool noise punk aggressive thing that sounds very raw and exciting
