    Sweet.

Just got Assault on Dark Athena for 360. Can't wait to also buy it for PC, keeping it sealed until new gaming tower I'll be assembling from NewEgg.

It's hilarious how he stumbles upon lost disks, scratched disks, misplaced disks and still insists in shunning DD for disks.

I wish I could watch him spend about an entire day installing and updating Neverwinter Nights 1 complete edition and still fail to run the game on a modern computer.

Or waste hours swapping disks and tracking down official patches and testing installs with Baldur's Gate. Then, after forgetting to select a full install by clicking every. single. checkbox, he has to swap disks all the time in order to move from area to area.

Also, C&C First Decade, hours of installing and about 30 minutes typing ridiculously long keys for each game. And then, if you buy a bigger HDD, you have to do it all over again.

Giving preference to disc versions is your right, but ignoring the wonderful world of digital distribution just because you like objects is kinda silly.

Steam will keep all your games updated and ready to play even after a full OS reinstall or switching to an entirely new PC. No fussing with discs or entering 25 character serial keys with half-erased letter, or swapping 6+ cds that copy files over veeeery sloooowly, then downloading and running 16 different online patches.

Gog also offers the best possible current versions of dozens of excellent older and not-so-old games.

Finally, the majority of the recently released games have pretty shitty boxes with a lonely disk inside (with the exception of special editions). I do like nice boxes and manuals, and I still have hundreds of both (Including the Falcon 4.0 Binder, all Wing Commander posters and magazines, and the semi-official, stand alone and rare Lock On binder)... but I also get the digital releases for the sheer practicality. Baldur's Gate, for example, among many others. The older packages, with beefy manuals are certainly worth it, but what's the point of getting Borderlands on a DVD? There's nothing there that makes up for the additional hassle.

BTW, Steam will outlast physical media for at least a few decades. It's been almost 15 years since I could run my Wing Commander 5" 1/4 floppies. They're absolutely useless. Just like all those 3" 1/2 disks.

I would recommend that you check GoG, browse by your favorite ganres and check those games with the best scores.

EDIT2: I guess that a very neutral and "benign" short version of my point would be: Playing games and collecting games are not the same activity anymore, and one can get in the way of the other. Don't let the collection of items stop you from getting the most efficient versions of each game, and vice-versa.

Thanks! Already have System Shock 2 (can't get it to run)

The thread title says 2000/XP, but it should work for Vista/7 as well.

    EDIT: Disks are 3 1/4" floppies. DISCS are 5" circular CDs/DVDs/HD DVDs/Blu-rays.

Look up DISCPHILE. Yes I prefer physical media over downloads the majority of the time. Yes alot of those spindles were just the remaining discs from friends and also my own games. Yes I still have CD Jewel cases, boxed and other various forms of actual ownership compared to alot of Digital Distribution. You'd never go to flea markets, second hand stores or look online for the full boxed CD-ROM release of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis now would you? That to me is ownership and is more of a possession compared to 1s and 0s.

Another reason why I like physical media is because I'm also a film fanatic, especially Blu-ray including the film grain and intended look. Guess someone hasn't heard of NoCD exe's at all. Take it my age has something to do with it, my thinking something tangible and held for me is far superior compared to Digitial Distribution. What's your age honestly and do you buy CDs, films on disc or anything anymore because fuck shit like iTunes I'd rather buy the actual discs.
Also kept my HλLF-LIFE - Game of the Year Edition and got those GoldSrc games for free via Steam. Yes I even bought The Orange Box RETAIL. I'll be doing that now own for every Valve game I purchase for including PORTAL 2, Counter-Strike Source/Day of Defeat Source, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 and Episode Three.
Yes I have no problems doing digital distribution on Steam i.e. X-COM series or far far older games.
Yes I also own Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Yes I already am using the unofficial patches and fuck no I won't rebuy it on Steam since Troika doesn't even exist anymore. Why yes I am having problems with Aliens versus Predator - Gold Edition on my Vista Service Pack 2. Why Rebellion is still around so I'll rebuy it on Steam. Get my point?
If it's such a problem with you I still want to own factory-made physical media of games/etc. then stop posting in my thread and take your shit elsewhere. Why? I don't have to explain shit.

Thanks Corky for System Shock 2 link.

Yes especially since Steam is unlikely to be around 20 years from now. Or not.

I read somewhere online Gabe saying if Steam wasn't around anymore they'd figure out a way to still play games. I have an insanely long password to everything though.

So has anyone ran GTA IV + Episodes from Liberty City with ENB mod? How is it?

Chris, 2000 was such a good year. Deus Ex, Thief 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Diablo 2, Unreal Tournament..

I really think 2011 might beat it, especially if Diablo 3 comes out. How perfect would it be if Diablo 3 and Deus Ex 3 came out in the same year, along with Duke Nukem?

Duke Nukem Forever is a complete joke to me. 13 years of waiting for a damn game will never live up to the hype. If it does get released I'll only be buying it used for less than $12. There better be 5,000 square miles in it too.

I still just have GTA IV sans Episodes from Liberty City for 360. Hell I'm just going to be buying both for PC and keeping them sealed until I get all programs, codec packs and other random shit before installing games. Oh on this. Operating System will be Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit a long with that Virtual Windows interface so I can also run 98 for those older games. Pity I've largely forgotten MS-DOS or I'd be using DOSBOX.

I don't disagree with most of the things you said.

I also don't think you really read what I wrote, you seem to be replaying to a whole different person. There is helpful advice on my post, you know, like how collecting and playing games are not so compatible anymore. I also have a huge ass collection of boxes and disks (I don't give a shit about the nerd imaginary difference between disks and discs, btw) I didn't come here to shit on anything, just to add to the debate and discourse involving the experience of gaming. But you're so intent on being special and superior and picking fights, well, your loss.

What I was trying to say is that maybe nowadays it's better to buy the old boxes for the collection, but to actually play the DD versions.

I already have Cataclysm active on my WoW account, but I also ordered the cool Collector's Edition. I rebought all the Prince of Persia games on Steam, just so I wouldn't have to use the discs anymore. But yeah, I'd love to find and buy fully boxed System Shock 1 and 2 (I have the cheap jewel cases). I'll keep the nice Oblivion SE box with the coin and map even though I got it again on Steam. And, sincerely, current games come with packages so shitty (DVD case, flimsy "manual" full of credits and disclaimers, one disc, ugly spine prints), that I don't really feel that they actually add anything to a good collection. OTOH, Collector's Edition are pretty cool, of course. I wish I could get more of them where I live.

(I have a bajillion bytes of cracked .exes spread around a million cd-rs and DVD-rs, they really fucking suck, BTW. They just add one more step to the whole nightmare).

Redownload and organise from GameCopyWorld. I still have and found again in a box of games last week WarCraft 1, 2 including expansion and manuals. DOSBox? Yeah, right.
But I really don't care about WoW. The MMO I do play off and on is TLotRO which I bought the Mines of Moria Collector's Edition from GameStop for only $10. Just miss the days of the 80's and 90's where games came pre-packed with alot of cool stuff. Hell even considering rebuying AVP 2000 on Steam and buying for the first time X-COM series from there. Amongst some other difficult to find older titles available on Steam.

    Heavily interested in the following:
Total War series after, will be played in sequential order, ROME; BATMAN: Arkham Asylum; BORDERLANDS: Game of the Year Edition; WarCraft III; S.T.A.L.K.E.R. titles released after SoC/will be buying all three; Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper; The Chronicles of Riddickulous: Assault on Dark Athena (PC counterpart since 360 release owned for about a week.); SPLINTER CELL games after Chaos Theory in order; Max Payne 2; FARENHEIT; some others.

WoW was just an example of a great boxed copy of a game. I also have LotRO, and it's an amazing game.

Do you like Space Sims? The Wing Commander series is 1) excellent!, 2) Physical only! (;)), 3) Playable and 4) The boxes are big and full of goodies.

I still read my Wing Commander manuals every few months, they're always formatted like a magazine or a collection of military documents. There are also maps and posters. I don't know how hard or expensive it is to track the original boxes down on Ebay, but they're certainly worth it.

Total War will take you a hellish long time, maybe you should (and I'm just making a suggestion here) start with a shortest series of games, or intersperse each TW game with, say, a Splinter Cell game.

XCom is really worth it, and the Steam versions are good enough. I'd also track down the boxed versions, but they're much harder to install and run, so I'd advise you to use the Steam version regardless of buying the boxes. I remember Apocalypse being particularly hard to install and run right on Win7.

Batman is an excellent choice of first game in that sequence, because it's really amazingly good and not too long, so you'll get a lot of concentrated awesomeness and be free to play another game soon.

I really love STALKER games too.

I own a sizeable chunk of the all the good PC games made from 1990 to now, so feel free to ask. There is an old list on my sig, it has most of the old games I have.

I've read there's online downloads where the game developers have made available for Wing Commander III and IV HD resolution or there-about stuff for them. Including the FMVs.
Total War I figure I'll be buying all of them, installing them in a TOTAL WAR Series folder and then just play through them in series order. More as a self reward.
Arkham Asylum I think I'll be buying for 360 first since it's another one of those games which runs really slow ar default settings on my current set-up. Will be buying the PC one anyway for future installation for "Atomic Monkey" Gaming/Multi-Faceted Usage PC.
X-COM? I just figure say fuck it and by the bundle/pack of them since it'll be cheaper. Could've sworn I had UFO Defense or the one which takes place underwater given to me by a friend a really long time ago.
Only played Shadow of Chernobyl with Complete 2009 mod, again from a friend, so far so I'm certainly going to be buying each one boxed/DVD case.
For Command &/and Conquer series I barely played them when they first were released but I did download the demo of Red Alert 3 for my 360 quite awhile ago. Will be buying the Premier Edition of RA3 very soon along with The First Decade. So yes that's another series I believe it's due time for me to jump on finally.
Can't seem to get FAR CRY to work when I'm actually in the levels in the game but the menus are fine. Infrared LED mouse. Another game a friend just gave to me to own with the full CD jewel case. Except the main characters voice actor is below D-movie acting.
WAIT, also did the demo for Just Cause 2 and it had low FPS and chunking along with my current computer so I'll be playing it on PC first.
VERY interested in the Dead Space games from what little I've seen of them and I figure when I play Dead Space 1 it'll be a completely new go-in. Course spoiler-free.

Just remember soon I'll also be buying a PS3 (with Emotion Chip if I could find one/for PS2 games also and mostly to save more space), after new gaming PC, along with Katamari Forever, Resistance series, MGS4, God of War Collection and indecisive selection for others at the moment.

EDIT: PFFFFFT, forgot the Uncharted series for PS3 also! Yeah and eventually I'm considering buying a Wii also. Especially for GameCube backwards compatibility.
Double EDIT: Since I'm quite the 007 fan I'll be rebuying Quantum of Solace for 360 and buying it for PC. Dual purchase for BLOOD STONE for 360/PC. Same for the rest of the 007 games available for PS2 ESPECIALLY Everything or Nothing.

The ps2 slim is about the size of two DVD cases stacked on top of each other, so you're not saving that much space.

One of the big Wing Commander fan sites got permission to release Wing Commander 1 for free. Although it doesn't actually work without major tweaking. Which I guess enforces your point about how great most (retail) digital download sites are for playing old games.

Oh I was considering III and IV then the next few Mark Hamill were in.

For S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I'm EXTREMELY interested in them since I've only played Shadow of Chernobyl with Complete 2009 mod on my current set-up. Will be buying SoC first then whichever comes next which was released first. Clear Sky or Call of Pripyat? Doesn't matter I'll also be buying METRO 2033 for a low price.

    RE: Hi Res Wing Commander:

The CIC has the hi res videos for WC Prophecy, which can be legally downloaded from them. They also have the patch you need to actually play the game with those files. Don't let the fact that the CIC forums are a silly goose dictatorship ruled with a silly goose hand stop you from browsing the amazing files.

There are no extra video files for WCIII, and no free WCIV video files. If you wanna play WCIV with nicer video, you need the rare DVD-ROM version, which demanded a special hardware decoder board. Now we have Gulikoza's Amazing Thingy with makes it work with any DVD-ROM drive. I was lucky enough to buy the DVD from a dude on ebay who probably found a box full of them forgotten on a random warehouse and sold them all for cheap, years ago.

Whatever Wing Commander game you wanna play, the CIC has the necessary files to run it.

Those would be III, IV and Prophecy in that order.
So I finally got a wired 360 controller along with XPadder. Where should I look online for 360 profiles for games with this program?:?

The home site should have a couple, but AFAIK there aren't many.
I'd play all Wing Commander games, the first 2 are really cool, even without FMV.

Would I be able to play those on Windows 98 via VMWare?

For the 360 Wired Controller with XPadder business here:

XPadder with 360 controller or others game profiles?

Time for some BioShock on the PC.

Wing Commander 1 and 2 run perfectly on DOSBox. Win98 wouldn't help at all. Actually, all Wing Commanders older than IV run fine on DOSBox. IV has the Win95 version and WCP is Windows only.
