What I really liked about the map design was that there were (accidently or purposely, no idea) dead zones in all the AA which made it perfect for helicopters to navigate the map and restrict their movement until they were dead. I got so good at piloting that where I was on the map I would know which AA site was locking onto us. They should really play off that in BF3, restrict the power of helicopters by minimizing map dominance (hell make it AI controller AI, I don't really care) and add a map awareness skill gap to heli pilots.

I'd almost like to see them have jets in a counter air and somewhat limited anti ground role and then include something like an A10 as well that is there to perform focussed and targetted fire missions. Both with limited ammo before returning to an airfield and both alongside effective stationary and mobile AA platforms.

1943's airstrikes were pretty good. Completely counterable by a good pilot with a long delay between uses, but very destructive if it makes it through.

I would like a way to practice flying in single player (perhaps with bots) with all the aircraft, instead of trying to find an empty server with the right map at the right stage or inflicting your ineptitude on a full team.

I have absolutely no hope for NS2, I gave up on that six years ago. I loved that game though, but I am a realist.

Fortunately this game is very real, I never gave up hope entirely but I am relieved that a PC version is coming out.

Wait, you have no hope that it will ever come out ?
I'm pretty sure they Alpha already hit (which was distributed over steam) and was out for people who bought their 40 dollar pre-order. The price of the normal pre-order increasing to 40 dollars with beta.

E: Their website seems to say that beta is out.

Yeah I know, but I gave up on it a long time ago and lost interest. Saw the beta, it was 100 percent unplayable, month later same thing, I stopped caring. They just took too long to make it and I don't have any trust in them as a company anymore. If it every does actually come out I might try out a demo.

The airstrikes in '43 were 3 bombers flying in formation, you got to turn them left/right (slowly, so decide early in the approach run) and choose when to drop the bombs as you flew over. It was pretty cool.

As someone who put thousands of hours into Battlefield 2 (hated 2142 and BC, enjoyed BC 2 though ,just wished it was more like BF2) and competed on a sponsored team, it is about fucking time. I just hope they actually put in some skilled weapons unlike BC2. Bring back fly by wire RPGs (I was a fucking surgeon with those, I could hit anything on a map from absurd distances, like those little buggies I knew how to hit from a hundred or so yards away) and TV guided missiles. Also the post nerf 203 was perfect, one shot kill but you pretty much had to hit them with it.

This is probably the game that I had the most fun with, I just hope they can do it correctly. Snipers that actually work, RPGs that take skill, helicopters that take skill and require teamwork (no more single seat shenanigans) tanks that require teamwork would be fun, but hard to implement and jets that aren't the main force in a game but still feel worthwhile.

tanks that aren't paper-thin that require a driver and a gunner to shoot the main cannon would be pretty neat

too bad pubbie players would never be able to use them well

The problem with tanks that are too strong is that the AT class either feels useless or requires too much teamwork, that or they get too much ammo and the light vehicles get wrecked or they have to get buffed and the light vehicles become too hard to kill and are no longer light vehicles. It is a strange balance, I kind of appreciated the way BF2 did it, tank could take 2 hits from behind, 3 on the sides (jesus it has been long I might be wrong) or 4 in the front. They also had small areas that were weaker, treads from the front or side were two hit kills, the incredibly small part on the front between the turret and body could sometimes be a one or two shot kill depending, it was really bugged.

APCs were always two shots from everywhere, and light vehicles were almost always a one shot to the engine block, it is hard to change that. Maybe if they upped the strength of all vehicles, gave the AT class slightly faster rockets, reload faster, more ammunition but gave the tanks weak spots that are hard to hit. The top of tanks maybe? That was really easy to hit even on ground, just right before you hit a tank lift up and then drop the missile. That is actually how you hit fast moving light vehicles from a distance, try and bring it in from the top, that way the target is much larger than the small profile.

Helicopters had a few weapoints, the transports were always a killshot on passengers if you hit underneath, blackhawk tire was a one shot kill for some reason too. That added so much depth to the game.

That sounds neat. Maybe I was the only one still hoping that 1943 would come to PC, but I'm pretty bummed that I never got to play it.

1943 was kind of strange, it was a weird mix between Bad Company and 1942, not sure if I liked it...battlefield isn't meant to be on a console.

They were fun but the complexity of battlefield demands a PC to run it. Dedicated servers, joysticks, independent sensitivity for all the vehicles and infantry, that requires the precision of a mouse to effectively use. The chat was a big one, the world just feels empty and hollow if you can't hear anyone besides a few team mates breathing into a mic, Battlefield really was a social game in a lot ways.

The only thing I agree with is chat, and it's actually an understandable change to squad-based ingame chat. It can also be circumvented through usage of parties on Live. Controls all fare well to boot. Quite frankly, I don't buy into that argument at all.

Try a helicopter on BF2, it is much better than BC2. Also the vehicles are much easier to control with a mouse since you can turn and aim more accurately, a lot of the time what you are shooting is actually in front of what you want to kill and auto aim isn't going to help that. BC2 worked around that by not having too many wide open areas (the winter map was fairly small compared to most BF2 maps) but on the PC you can really tell the different. Being able to turn a tank turret fast and still maintain accuracy is huge.

All I know is that I'd be slightly miffed if they plant the swap kit/use key to the same binding again because they ran out of buttons on the console controller. And then tell users to just deal with it.

A commo rose would be nice too.

Helos handle like crap in both. 2142 was the only one in my book that handled worth a damn for gunships.

My point is, it works for both, and it sounds like they're tailoring the different versions to their respective strengths. What's wrong with that? I'd like more Battlefield on the 360.

Helicopters in BF2 were fucking amazing, it took a little getting use to but once you got it down you felt like a god. A metal god with blades and rockets.

I could spin in perfect circles around a tank, directly above it, maintaining altitude and attitude. I could go in between any building, I could fly through the streets at around 15 feet between buildings. I could flip upside down during a helo dog fight, letting my gunner see upward to fire off a rocket at the helicopter that though it had the advantage. I could instantly flip my helicopter around and juke behind buildings. I had control, and that is what makes video games fun.

They said that they tailored to individual strengths in BC2. They said that a PC version of 1943 was coming out any month now. They say a lot of things

It is reasonably telling that the only versions of Battlefield to come to consoles are spinoffs from the main series until BF3, and even then, the player count for the console versions is halved.

I just hope the maps for the PC version get bigger 64-player versions, instead of being stuck with BC2-sized maps.

I had a fairly fast computer for the time, and I was sort of an asshole, I loved to get the jet and just do stunts over the airfield for all the assholes waiting for it to respawn.

Although by far the funnest thing in this game to do if you are an asshole...
Have one person on the enemy team with a fast computer, grab the black hawk and fly it to you, load it full of C4 and have him get a full load of team mates. Blow up whenever you feel like it. There are too many good ways to blow it up that I won't list all of them but my favorite was next to a jet/helicopter/transport. My record was 8 kills.

    That actually sounds pretty broken.

And BC2 is tailor made for the consoles and plays perfectly. DICE was just being nice to the PC for this one or expecting extra cash. I expect Battlefield 3 to be very PC centric though.

Hmm, Wake Island. That map was the pinnacle of why I hated BF2. Either the Chinese Team wasn't retarded (Good J10 Pilots could camp the entire American Team on the Carrier since it had better turning than the F35) or the US Team just absolutely stomped the Chinese Team. It was hard to get that in between battle.

J 10 wasn't that much better than the american jet, it was faster but the american jet could be more maneuverable if you knew how to work it. I wasn't exactly an ace or anything but from some of the top pilots in the game you just had to know the match up. It is faster so you use that to your advantage, I forget the trick but there was some way to get the F 35 to turn really fast, faster than the J 10.

Also, NO TRACER DARTS!!! YESSSSSS Day one fucking purchase.
