Japanese Windows 7 Professional?

VerdianVerdian Registered User regular
I currently have an American version of XP. But, as I live in Japan, I am thinking of going to the store to get a copy of Windows 7. I've read on the microsoft page that Windows 7 Professional has the ability to change between languages. My question, then, is can I purchase Windows 7 Pro and switch it all over to English? What difference is there between that and just buying an American version? Will I be limited in what I can play if I get the Japanese version? Can I download patches from the English websites?

In summary, should I go to my local store and get Japanese Windows 7 Pro, or use Amazon and pay more (shipping) for an American version?

Thanks!

Maybe the Japanese version is different, but at least in the US, Ultimate is the only version that allows switching to other languages.

Theoretically there are these different regional versions of Windows 7:

"Standard" which is the regular retail copy sold everywhere
"N" which is the European version. Windows Media Player isn't bundled here.
"KN" which is the Korean version. Windows Media Player and Windows Live Messenger isn't bundled here.
"VLK" which is the Volume license version.

It's been a couple weeks since I last installed a copy of Ultimate, but I'm pretty sure you select your primary language as part of the installer process, then you can install additional region packs if you want to switch. However, I haven't installed off a non-ENUS install media, so I'm not sure how much Microsoft changes in the installer process.

Not sure if this helps, but I use the Japanese version of Vista on my computer and I haven't had any problems running English software.

Living in Japan I bought a laptop with Windows 7 Home, and I just used vistaliser to convert the language by force.

If you get pro you should be able to get language packs off the MS site

I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for this very reason....

With Windows 7 Ultimate, you can switch languages. I have the U.S. version of ultimate and flip back and forth between English and Japanese all the time.

For those not in the know, the problem is that Legacy Japanese applications tend not to use unicode for their menu bars and dialog boxes. This creates problems when trying to render them on non-Japanese machines. Sometimes I have to flip the language in order to get the menu bars to render properly. Microsoft does not do region lock outs or anything, however some Japanese apps (Winny comes to mind) checks to see if you are running a U.S. version of windows and not run. When you switch into Japanese, it tends to fix that.

My advice, get 7 Ultimate U.S. for no other reason that it defaults to English first before you download any language packs.
