Questions about iPad

I am thinking about buying the new iPad 2 for my mother as a birthday gift.

She has an old laptop that is very slow and always crashing. She's been thinking about getting a new one recently. However, all she does on her laptop is watch TV shows, play little flash games (bejeweled, etc), and video chat with her boyfriend (who is currently overseas). I figure an iPad would be perfect for her. However, I don't know anything about the iPad, so here are my questions:

1) The iPad has Netflix, right? And I also heard it has Hulu, but is that free or does it have a monthly charge? I also know CBS and ABC have apps that let you watch episodes through your iPad, but does it work well (as in, not glitchy, etc)? Actually, any advice at all you have about how she can watch TV shows through an iPad would be appreciated.

2) What are some good old-lady games on the iPad? You know, things that she could play while thinking about other things. Mostly just simplistic puzzle games are what I'm looking for.

3) This is really important for her. I know the iPad has FaceTime, but her boyfriend doesn't have access to that program. My question is, can you use Skype/Yahoo! Messenger/Google Talk (any one of those, really) to video chat through the iPad? And I know the iPad with cameras isn't quite out yet, but if you could tell me how Apple treats similar programs on the iPhone 4, that would help a lot. Basically: Do third party programs have access to use the camera to video chat?

That's all I can think of now. Obviously I will run all this by her before I make the purchase... I'm just trying to gauge right now whether I should even bring it up.

Thanks a lot!

I hate you and you hate me.

I can't answer all of these for you, but I can answer question 1). Netflix is available on ipad. Streaming is $8 a month and has a pretty decent library of stuff available. Hulu is not free on ipad. To use hulu on any device except for a regular internet browser on a computer, you have to pay for hulu plus which is $8 a month as well. Which one to go for would definitely depend on what kind of stuff she wants to watch.

Well, she currently has Netflix Instant Streaming, so she would be good on that.

However, she also likes to watch current TV shows like the day after they air... is Hulu Plus good for this? She mainly watches sitcoms.

    Hulu Plus is definitely that.

    2) Sudoku, Picross, Bejeweled (though it's upscaled from the iPhone version) and plenty of others. Should be more than enough for her.

    3) iPhone can Skype with the camera, so there ya go.

If she has Comcast she can watch new shows on their website.

    Thanks guys.

I'm actually thinking about getting an iPad myself, but I'm torn between buying a refurbished first gen iPad for 350 or the new one for 500.

The thing is, I don't need the cameras at all. As for the thinner/lighter thing, I don't care about that at all, either.

So the only real applicable difference is the increased processor performance, right? From what I've seen, the original iPad is perfectly fine speed-wise. I know they update the software relatively frequently... are these updates kind to older devices? As in, would the new updates be perfectly serviceable on older devices?

So, to any iPhone 3GS owners, was your device just fine after you updated to new software? And also, were apps developed to run on the iPhone 4's increased power still functional on your device?

I noticed a lot of slowdown on my 3GS after the new firmware. It's noticeably slower when compared to an iPhone 4.

I have a 3G and it becomes drastically slower for every new firmware update, I am pretty convinced that it's a bullshit sales tactic.
