Beaten and sore, Summer picks herself up from the rubble and catches her breath. Picking her way out from the debris she finds a clear space on the floor and kneels, deep in prayer. A few moments later, the worst of the wounds on her companions begin to heal and Traorin starts to move within the Ragesian's grasp again. Drained, she stands back up and braces herself, trying to recover from being knocked around so much.

Head swimming from impacting against the wall, Dorn half kneels half leans against a mostly broken chair nearby. He groans low in his throat, trying to summon the will to stand again as his wounds bleed freely all over his pale clothes. Suddenly, a merciful wash of energy flows over the monk, rejuvenating his aching muscles and knitting together his torn flesh. He raises his head, seeing Summer kneeling in prayer nearby. To his pious eyes she is wrapped in holy power, bathed in the natural renewing forces of the world.

The half-orc smiles beatifically, finally finding the strength to stand. He breathes deeply, drawing in the healing energy and marshalling his defences and his mental focus for the task at hand. After closing his eyes for a brief moment to thank Melora and Summer, Dorn's gaze snaps back to Flaganus and his fists clench in determination once more.
    Healer's Mercy: 7 + 4 = 11 HP

    Movement: Stand from prone.

Standard: Second Wind - 7 HP and +2 to all defences until start of next turn.

Result: Dorn is at 22/28 HP + 5 temp HP, with +2 to all defences until start of his next turn.

Feeling renewed and back up to full strength, Traorin dug deep into himself and broke free of the Ragesian brute's grip. Once free he gained his footing and quickly took stock of his enemy, quickly calculating how he would go on the offensive before striking out with his magical battleaxe, wreathed in angry lightning. He lashed out twice, the first swing missing by a wide margin, but the second cutting deeply into brute's shoulder, causing a small ammount of blood to spurt from the wound. If Traorin could keep on weathering this murderer's relentless attacks he could keep him distracted long enough for his comrads to encircle and take him down for good. Traorin only hoped that it would be him that landed the killing blow though.

Staggering backwards from the axeman's blow, Swain shakes his head wearily. He brightens somewhat when he feels the effects of Summer's divine assistance. Stepping forward back into the house, he flourishes his broadsword before arcing it towards his opponent, intent on forcing him offbalance to give Traorin an opening to attack. As his swing descends, the pain from the blows sends a shooting pain through his arm. His arm then reflexively moves towards his body, causing the sword to miss Flaganus completely.

"Alright Swain," he says through gritted teeth, "Time to get back in the game!" Bolstered further by his own words, he calls out to Traorin, "Nice job there, how about another go?" Seeing an opportunity, Traorin swings through with his battleaxe, but the Ragaesian's armor proves too effective.
    Swain's Actions:
    • Move Action: Shift to E6
    • Standard Action: Warlord's Favor vs. Flaganus(D5): +8 vs. AC(22) = 12 Miss

Taking a deep breath, Areneth took stock of the situation. Things were looking pretty good, although it was amazing to him that the Ragaesian still stood after the sheer amount of punishment they had put him through. Looking back to the task at hand, Areneth sent out another mental wave, pounding away further at Flaganus's consciousness.

Following up his attack, Areneth tapped into the man's subconscious and injected a false thought; a suspicion that there was another attacker taking up a flanking position behind him. Seeing Flaganus's attention diverted from the combat momentarily, Areneth hoped that would be enough of an opening for one of his compatriots to deliver a decisive blow.
    Areneth's Actions:
    • Standard Action: Mind Thrust vs. Flaganus

    Fallen Devil! Round 3.5

The Ragesian seethes with rage. Clutching his shoulder, the man glares at the Dragonborn in front of him.

"Bloody Hell! Why don't you just stay dead ?! Take this!"

He swings his battleaxe in succession, causing the Dargonborn to lose his footing, causing him to fly comically through the air, and (taking a cue from the Half-Orc monk) crashes into the wall, and slump onto the ground, blood flowing freely from his barely healed wounds.

A smug smile forms on the soldier's lips, then clutches his wound again. "Godsdamn it all! I have to get out of here! But first... you know what they say about the last laugh..." He makes his way toward the Dragonborn, casually strolling toward him, completely ignoring Swain.

"Now, Hold still! This just goin' to hurt... a bit!"

He swings his axe in succession once more, causing the Dragonborn to catapult toward the others, falling on to the cold ground, blood flowing even faster this time...

Infuriated at his refusal to leave Traorin alone, Summer spares a quick moment to pray to her god before charging at the Ragesian with a low growl. Unfortunately, the rough ground surrounding the Ragesian caused her to trip over her own feet and fail to do any damage at all. Consoling herself that she was at least able to prevent the death of her companion, she prepares herself for another attack.

Thanks to Summer, Traorin was back on his feet. He gave her a quick nod in thanks before turning his full attention back to the Regasian murderer. Summoning up his ancestral heritage in the form of dragon's breath, Traorin launches a devastating lightning bolt from his throat toward Flaganus. Flaganus is too quick however and the throws himself to the side, the bolt passing him. Not deterred in the slightest Traorin lets out a massive roar, still a little dizzy after another close call Traorin bounds toward the Regasian and lets fly a mighty swing, channeling the power of thunder present within the magical weapon as he does so. Sadly, his wounds bear him down, slowing him ever so slightly and causing him to miss yet another attack.

Grimacing at the sight of Traorin repeatedly bloodied by the brutish Ragesian, Dorn moves to his ally's flank, giving the dragonborn a stalwart nod before turning his focus back to the enemy. "You've nowhere to go, murderer," he growls, "I've been fighting big men like you all my life. It's time for this to stop."

Even as Flaganus opens his mouth to retort, Dorn uses his toe to flip up a wooden plank discarded among the debris at his feet. When it meets eye level with the two men, the half-orc suddenly changes its direction with his palm, slamming the plank into the soldier's face with a spray of blood. Moving forward to capitalise on his new momentum, the monk cracks his knee against the inside of Flaganus' own knee, buckling his leg slightly and putting him off balance. Dorn then follows up with a brutal burst of strikes, battering the weak points of the Ragesian's armour once more, slowly grinding down his body and will to fight.

    Fallen Devil! Round 4.5

Surrounded on all sides, the brute of a Ragesian soldier merely grunts in annoyance.

"Nowhere left to go?! Listen 'ere 'alf-breed! If I gotta tear each and every one's 'ead here off to get out, then by Bahamut's Fury, I'll do it! I got to meet up with my other Ragesian buds back in the army! Right now, I'm pissed as hell!"

    He turns toward Summer.

"Outta my way, wolf-girl! I'm angry, and you really don't want to be in my way when I'm angry!"

    Summer holds her ground.

    "Very well then! Eat steel!"

He swings his battle axes with supreme force, hacking nearly through her armor, and causing the young shifter girl to fly through the air. She lands on her back, but her fall was thankfully hindered by the bed she fell onto.

Regardless, Flaganus turns his attention back toward the group, and thumps his chest with his axes, humming a simple Ragesian battle hymn, and gathering some meager endurance for the coming fight ahead...

Regarding his opponent with a calculating look, Swain moves to his right slightly, then calls gives a few military hand gestures to Dorn and Traorin, signaling that one of them can move into position at the Ragaesian's flank. As his compatriot moves over, Swain utilizes the tactical advantage to find an opening for his sword in his opponent's armor. Seeing the opportunity, he stabs forward, but the opening closes just too quickly, and his sword hammers off his opponent's armor without effect.

Grinning fiercely as he watches Traorin smash Flaganus into the wall, Dorn follows the brute, ducking under a wild axe swing to throw a jab to the body. Unfortunately the Ragesian responds with surprising speed considering his size and wounds, stabbing at Dorn with the tip of his axe. Though the half-orc easily dodges this attack as well, his own strike goes awry, bouncing harmlessly off an armour plate.

Not to be deterred, Dorn slides around the soldier, attempting to open up the possibility of a flanking manoeuvre by his comrades. He flicks a pair of vicious kicks towards Flaganus' legs, but the Ragesian barely grunts, setting his stance and allowing his tree trunk like limbs to absorb the blows with no effect. What will it take to bring this man down, Dorn begins to wonder, how much have we already done to him? What more can we do to him?

    Fallen Devil! Round 5.5

With his inner reserves now faltering, the Ragesian soldier started to feel an emotion it had felt all too long ago...

    Fear!

His morale now stricken somewhat, Flaganus shakes his head, trying to clear and focus his mind.

"I could ask the same question, luv!" he replies to Titania's question. "I'm kinda surpised ye lot still standin'. BUt as I says before, I gots places ta go, so outta my way!"

He turns his gaze to the diminutive (well from his point of view) Warlord in front of him. "Well, ye must be the gnat annoyin' me from behind? Well, let me repay yer efforts in kind!"

He swings his axes wildly, forcing Swain to fly across the room, landing close to the Drow psionist. With an opening present, he shifts closer toward the exit, keeping a wary eye on his foes.

Blood pours from Swain's wounds as he crashes to the ground. Looking up through blurred eyes, he tries to summon the strength to stand. Unable to do so, he pulls himself along the floor through the wreckage of furniture in the small hovel, then summons up enough strength to swing his sword wildly at the Ragaesian. The attack hits, pushing the man back into the corner of the house.

"You're not going anywhere but the grave!" he shouts through clenched teeth as the attack hits. He then eyes Dorn, motioning to the wobbled Flaganus, "Slap some sense into him, my half-orc friend!"

Heartened somewhat by Swain's success in knocking the brute towards him, Dorn takes the opportunity to attempt to reverse the party's fortunes. Catching Flaganus as he totters backwards, the half-orc grasps the soldier and spins, brutally slamming him face-first into the wall. As the monk slips back to his ready place in the corner, he snaps a quick backfist to his enemy's temple and bares his teeth, "As I said, murderer, you've nowhere to go."

The only change I'm willing to see him engage in is from living to dead!" Traorin shouted as he launched himself at the enemy. He focused his concentration fully on his intended target before striking out against the Ragesian brute. Feeling the strength of the very earth flow into his strike, Traorin's battleaxe, wreathed in lightning, struck a devastating hammer-blow on the Ragesian. Watching in grim satisfaction as Titania's blast fells the Ragaesian, Areneth turns immediately and crosses the room to the slain bodies of the family which once inhabited the house. Kneeling beside the female body, he straightens her legs and places her hands across her chest in a resting pose, then closes her eyelids by passing his palm over her face. Bowing his head for a few moments as if in prayer, he then stands and turns to the group, his face a mixture of anger and loss.

"I am not much of a religious man, and we dare not tarry too long in this place, but perhaps Summer can say a few words to send these two off on their journey before we go?"

"Dishonorable cur." Traorin spit on the body of Flaganus as he leaves the room. "May he rot in the Abyss for all eternity"
Traorin uses two healing surges to bring him back up to full health. One healing surge left for the day.

God I hope there's not another ambush.

    Fallen Devil! - Encounter Complete!

Summer says her words to the dearly departed, and leaves the house to trail Titania. As the heroes regroup, none of them even realised the body of their fallen rustle and move in the debris.

Before the last of the heroes walk out of the house and rendezvous with Torrent (and the baby), they are beset by a frenzied Flaganus, foam flowing from his mouth, and his eyes bloodshot, swollen and filled with seething hatred.

“WRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!” the beastly berserker man cries out, all pretence of survival and common sense flung out of the window.

“Stay back, I’ll deal with him!” Swain calls out. Without thinking this through, the young man rushes forward and tackles the madman with a head butt even Traorin could admire. He tackles him deep into the house, colliding the man and impacting him on a nearby support beam. Faganus’ spine breaks with a sickening crack, along with the support beam, instantly killing the Ragesian Wywern Rider. Flaganus Mortus was dead.

Unfortunately for Swain, that support beam was also all that was holding the house. Within less than a few heartbeats (which felt like hours in comparison), the house crumbles and crashes down the two, burying Swain and Flaganus deep in a debris of glass, mortar and brick. Neither one was seen by our heroes, and neither rustled to indicate they were alive.

As the last remaining pebble stopped bouncing off the makeshift grave, a silence befalls on the heroes. Such was the silence, that it felt that even the invading army gave a reprieve, as shots and screams stopped for a moment. Of course, this was merely an illusion, for soon the rings of battle soon returned, as though nothing had happened. But two important events happened...

The Ragesian Devil was defeated and finally killed in battle, a minor blow to the Ragesian army...

And the brave and admirable Swain gave his live to save the others...

Traorin looked at the rubble in mute shock. The group's strategist lie somewhere under the collapsed building, and Traorin could think of no more fitting a tomb than the site of a warrior's last battle. Standing in front of the ruined house that marked his recently aquainted friend's grave, Traorin saluted it in respect. Before he turned away however, something caught his eye in the wreckage. It was Swain's famous hat, somewhat banged up, it must have been knocked away when Swain heroically tackled the Ragesian brute. Walking over to it Traorin picked it up and dusted it off, in its rugged state it reminded him of its former wearer, noble despite its humble origins. Without another thought Traorin put it on, he determined he would pay tribute to his fallen friend by carrying his beloved hat to the end of their journey. If he could not join them in body, Traorin resolved that Swain at least would do so in spirit.

Titania stared at the house which had become Swains burial mound in stunned silence. "But... but... he... he was dead." She thinks. Overwhelmed with guilt she grasps helplessly at her memories of Flaganus lying unconsious on the floor right before she strode out of the house. If she's had just a little less anger, just a litte more patience and had made sure he was dead, Swain might still be alive. Corellons grace, she'd been overjoyed to join the fight once the baby was safe, she hadn't given a second though to the dangers she and her companions faced.

Swallowing her sorrow she glances over at Dorn who's struggle with his own rage had been evident since their first meeting. As the sounds of the raging battle invade her mind once more she squares her shoulders and silently promises to be more restrained in the future.

Areneth stands in mute shock after the events transpired. He was certain that the Ragaesian was dead, but that was not the case. Now Swain lay dead beneath the ruins of the house, and all because they had rushed in to save the baby.

Sensing the sadness from the rest of the party, Areneth offered up a few words, "Swain was a good man, and he sacrificed himself for the rest of the group. Let us honor his sacrifice by carrying on and fulfilling the mission he set out on." Going silent for a few seconds, Areneth continues, his voice sounding a bit sharper and full of anger this time, "…and let's be sure to kill as many Ragaesians as we can along the way…I think that's what he would have wanted."

Giving one final look to the ruined building, Areneth turns and heads back to Torrent, Rivereye and the baby. Scratching his head, he nods in the direction of the child, "What are we going to do with this baby? We certainly can't take him with us…"

Summer's pleasure at the defeat of the Ragesian was quickly tempered by Swain's passing. Seeing the dismay on the other's faces, she tried to offer up some consolation, "We should be celebrating Swain, not mourning him, for in his final acts he was the embodiment of Nusemnee's teachings. Surely he is enjoying an afterlife filled with more hats than he ever imagined in his lifetime!" Turning to Torrent, she offers, "Surely one of the nearby churches will be set up to take in the helpless tonight?"

As the others discuss Swain's sacrifice and try to celebrate or mourn him, as is their custom, Dorn stands strangely quiet, staring at the wreckage. His shoulders are slumped and his head is bowed as he occasionally clenches his fists, but without the usual commitment to his rage. The monk's demeanour is one of complete resignation and exhaustion, and though he even sheds a few tears for his fallen comrade, and perhaps even the villain that they slew, even these are without energy or drama.

After some time, he moves to rejoin the group, remaining silent and forlorn but apparently ready to continue on with them, if only because he has nothing left in Gate Pass.

Nodding at Summer's words, Areneth chimes in, "Yes, we should drop him off at an orphanage of some sort, then continue on our way to the school."

Looking the baby over further, his face brightens suddenly, and he even smiles. "We should name the baby Swain! That would be a fitting tribute to the legacy of our fallen comrade. Perhaps this young one will grow to be a man cut from the same cloth."

"He may yet, Araneth, but for now, we march onwards. The nearby safe house, a Temple of Bahamut is nearby. Less than a few blocks now. I know who's in charge there, and though he's... well, charming doesn't even begin to describe him," she says with dripping sarcasm, " He nonetheless is a staunch supporter of the Resistance. He'll take us in for the night. We need only pray the city lasts until then. For now though, we move..." She stands up, and carefully wraps the child in a blanket she found nearby. It wasn't the most comfortable, but it will at least keep the child warm. Before she turned she looks back at Rivereye's last location. The old gnome was hiding behind a nearby wagon. "Come on Rivereye, we're almost there. Do keep up!" with that, she starts running ahead, carefully holding the covered babe in one arm.

Rievereye merely coughs. "Easy for you to say, I ain't no spring chicken anymore! *Cough*" He followed behind the group, always trailing behind.

Torrent soon guides the party to a nearby temple of the Order of the Aquiline Cross, devoted to Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon. When asked, Torrent merely says it is a gathering place for resistance members.

When they entered the temple, they are greeted with a most depressing sight. The temple is packed with at least a hundred nervous people, all squeezed into a 40-foot circular prayer chamber and adjacent rooms.
Many are nervously relating rumors of how the battle at the main gates is going. Children cry, and priests tend to numerous injuries from fire, stampeding crowds, or violent looters. The people were scared and demoralized. Priests go between the wounded, tending them as best they can, their healing capability all expended.

The cleric of Melora sighs, knowing full well that she is more useful out there than in here. She leads the heroes to an ornate door behind the altar area and opens it. Stairs leading down into a crypt are guarded by two large half-orcs. They brandished their greataxes, but stood down when they spotted Torrent.

The underground area contains supplies and weapons for the Gate Pass resistance. Rivereye, coughing almost nonstop by now, is immediately taken to the infirmary. One of the clerics, a female elf, spots Torrent carrying the child, and queries on this strange sight. When Torrent answered, she merely smiles, and asks that she carry the child to the Infirmary as well. "Don't you worry about little ole' him, I'll find someone to take care of him. Don't you worry."

Resistance members guide the heroes to a small room with a few sleeping pallets, and then show them the common area and kitchen. The living spaces are makeshift, but function well.

"Well well, Torrent. I see these must be the ones that answered your summons. Strange, I only see five here. Weren't you looking for six of them? Did one suddenly got cold toes and ran off?!" a tired and haggard-looking Dwarf comes out from a corner, a hint of unpleasantness in his words.

"My friends, I welcome you Buron Watcher, leader of this cell of the Resistance." Torrent replies, a hint of sarcasm also dripping in her words.

Areneth follows the group to the church, and like his compatriots he is quiet along the way, thinking about the events that have led to this moment. The endless circle of life and death, and how he's been first-hand to all of it in the space of a few hours.

Entering the church, Areneth feels pity for those that have been forced from their homes by the conflict, and a resolve that he hadn't felt before to help end their plight. Heading downstairs, and watching as the baby is taken from Torrent, Areneth speaks to the elven cleric, "Yes, please find him a good home. His name is Swain, and he's going to do important things when he grows up."

On sight of the sleeping pallets, Areneth sits down on one and removes his pack, resting his head on his hands and breathing a deep sigh. He is tired and sore from the events that have transpired, and mentally exhausted. He looks up casually when the dwarf speaks but does not answer, preferring to let someone else explain.
