Review scores /= sales. Michael Bay movies are great examples of this.
I'm obviously biased since I work for THQ, but I think the multiplayer is a damned solid experience, and scratches the same itch that DICE Battlefield games do for me, while at the same time blending in some of the good stuff in CoD.
I have a few niggles (just like I did for every Battlefield title), but I also believe that good patching can solve those in short order.
Just my personal opinion, mind, for what that's worth.
Everyone I used to play battlefield with is enjoying it a lot. The only complaint they've had is that the lobby system is fucking terribly broken. It's almost impossible to get into a game with any number of my friends no matter how many times we try.
Oh, god. The bolt action sniper rifle is terrible. It does the same damage as the semi-auto one, but with crosshair sway and a really slow firing speed.

Find someone responsible for patching and tell them their PC version is broken. Otherwise, I think it could be pretty decent.

I'll give this game's multiplayer some points. It's pretty fun.
The presentation and graphics are terribad though. It looks very dated. Also, I don't like the 'feel' of shooting the guns. You don't get a good recoil effect or good tracer/bullet effects. It feels like sometimes no bullets come out when you pull the trigger. The heavy MG in particular is bad.
Some matches are so frustrating I just want to outright quite. Others are a blast and most are just a middle ground where I can play and relax without paying much attention to anything.
Also, with the recon drone, I don't know if you guys realized, but you can keep marking someone that's already marked and still get BP. Adds up quick if the person isn't shooting at you and nobody else is near to mark.

That's exactly where I'm at with this game Doc. I've just played a couple of games that were really fun. It really reminds me of Medal of Honor. The graphics were meh, but some of the gameplay was good.
I think I'll stick with this game, although it's not good enough to occupy me 100%
I dont know whether they can realisitically change this in a patch but seriously if they added some form of better recoil and long range bullet impact it would much improve the gunplay. If you're shooting at something more than 20 feet away, you dont get any indication of where the bullets are landing or anything.
Also, I can't be sure, but it feels as though some of the guns are not very accurate. The machine gun in particular. I've had the most joy using the sub machine gun at very short range.

Have to say I feel the opposite, I hate the Sub Machine gun it feels like it's just spraying all over the place and doing nothing. The LMG's though seem accurate and pack a pretty hefty punch.
One thing I'm finding that bugs me is the collision detection on the ballistics. Lining up a perfect long range head shot and having the bullet do absolutely nothing because there is a leaf or a 2 cm fence post with invisible edges or some other nearly invisible (or totally invisible in some cases) obstacle in the way is really frustrating. Especially because from your point of view there is no obstruction.

The 'mark' times out so yeah, you can follow someone around and keep tagging them for more points - it doesn't accrue points any faster though - and if the guy's staying alive that long then you'll NEVER get the assist points when someone actually kills him.
Parrot Drone was the first thing I maxed out accidentally - I probably owe 5 or 6 levels to that little drone. I'm around level 23 now and still have a blast with it.
If you have a decent group of people and can keep that thing alive - buzz around and look for where the enemy is clustering up, tag and run, then repeat until they're all dead. I only really 'follow' someone if it's a hum-vee or tank that no one seems to notice or can kill. either way it's kind of wasted time since people probably know about it already/
I'm loving the game so far, haven't spent much time on the SP and only a couple hours total on the MP so far.
MY only real complaint about the game is the range on weapons, it seems like every weapon is a laser-rifle with unlimited range. If I could put a sniper scope on an assault rifle I wouldn't even need the sniper rifle.

So I got this game today mainly for the single player story (CoD:MW2 really killed my joy of online play) and I bought it at a BX on a military base. They gave me an sweet coin that says "For Those Who Serve" on one side and "Homefront: Home is where the War is" with the Statue of Liberty holding a rifle.

Yeah as was stated before, buy this game for the MP, play the SP to waste time or to poke fun at an interactive Red Dawn.....
One thing I really like about the way they did the vehicles is that since you can only get one by choosing it at spawn - or killing someone in THEIRS, you don't see four people sitting on vehicle spawn points the whole match. People seem to be working to earn their BP so they can buy their own dam vehicles.
You can spawn into someone's vehicle, but it seems random and can range from assistant gunner on a tank/apache in the heat of battle, to a passenger spot on an armored transport about to die.
The Battle Commander reminds me of BF2142/1942 when someone actually spots people, except this one is automatic.
Spotting in Homefront also notifies the spotted player... so spot right before you shoot, or they'll find cover.
And yes I have seen odd hit detection on some maps where you clearly have line of sight but nothing happens when you shoot that red in your sights.

What sort of arsenal are we looking at here, in terms of total guns available to be used? Are there customization options like COD, too?

The amount of guns is honestly pathetically small. Two sniper rifles, 2 SMG's 2 LMG's and a few assault rifles. Plus the pre-order shotgun is the only shotgun in the game (A terrible decision in my opinion). You can customize them to an extent.
The lack of bullet penetration is starting to bother me a lot. I mean I am glad it's not overdone but someone ducking behind a thing piece of wood makes them impossible to finish killing and it's frustrating.

Combined with so little aim assist as to be non existant and even the most paper thin of cover being invulnerable and the 360 version has me in the throws of some serious love/hate. For god sakes the tank mounted 50 cal cant even shoot through a slatted wooden fense, much less heaven forbid you need to hit something more than ten feet away with conventional weapons.

That's disappointing to read, actually. I love me some gun porn; guess I'm stuck with COD for now.
1) I have heard (not confirmed, just hearsay for now) that they are going to bring in downloads with more weapons, so more maps + new weapons instead of just maps. (Other hearsay, because of the problems, a download or so my be free to try and make up for us dealing with the problems)
2) I don't mind not having an extreme amount of gun choices because to me, the more guns, the more liking something is to be over powered. With the way it is right now, nothing seems to be a clearly better than the other guns.
edit: as for the lack of bullet penetration, it can be annoying but I like knowing that I am safe behind of piece of cover and that someone randomly spraying their gun isn't going to get lucky and kill me. That is just me though...

On weapons:
While I do envision an ideal FPS game where there are literally hundreds of guns in each category that are more or less identical stats-wise (making the choice of using one over another purely superficial) and then only about a dozen different calibers (making balancing categories only as hard as in most FPS games) I currently don't have much of a problem with Homefront's small selection.
for rifles there's:
M4 carbine, full auto, medium damage
SCAR-L, 3rb, medium-high damage
ACR, full auto, low ROF than m4, better accuracy
AN94, presumably full auto, high damage chinese AK knockoff
M16, presumably 3rb
I think I'm missing one-- some kind of experimental rifle named like XM10 or something
for LMG's:
M249, high capacity, low rate of fire
SCAR-H LMG, 75 round clippazine and (superficial?) grippod, higher accuracy than M249
for SMG's:
a shorter M4-looking thing whose name escapes me, relatively high power, it's pretty neato
Kriss Super-V aka Vector, high rate of fire, lowish recoil, low power
DMR's:
semi auto rifle, 2 shots kill (unless headshot), high refire rate
bolt-action rifle, 2 shots kill (unless headshot), extremely low refire rate, thermals built in
secondaries:
M9 pistol, takes like 900 shots to kill, hope they don't know how to use two sticks at the same time.
DLC weapons:
Remington 870E, 5 or 6 shell capacity, will instant kill at MW2 SPAS range, will still do significant damage up to about 10x the range at which CoD shot magically disappears. Makes super quick work of the spy drones, much like skeet shooting.
and there we have it. That's all the weapons. While that is only a few, it feels like not one of them is just better than the others, and so far they're all quite distinct. Also bonus points for including some interesting weapons that aren't typically found in other games.
Generally, all the weapons have 3 red dots, 3 holographic sights, 3 acogs, suppressor
some weapons additionally have like 4 kinds of grenade lawnchairs and a 3 shell masterkey
you unlock the add-ons at regular intervals of kills for each gun (like in CoD 4, 5 kills to get the holos, 25 to get suppressor, 100 for red dots etc)
you unlock camos for what seems to be killstreaks with weapon. There are plenty of camo patterns (probably about a dozen) and they seem to entirely encompass the whole gun (none of that BS from CoD where only a tiny piece of the weapon is actually affected) patterns include instant classics like: desert, forest, urban, icy blue, firey red, chrome, gold, hello kitty*, digital, etc.
*well no not hello kitty, but pink and white camo with toki-doki style jolly rogers all over.
Also, is OP still around? I'd like to see an updated OP to collect some of the wisdom and information coming from those of us trying oh so desperately to get people to at least give this a chance. Also would love to see a metatag pop up, I'm sick of being oh so alone online. Just last night I had to chat with randoms! It was terrible.
okay not terrible, a handful of people were actually civil and discussing strategy and stuff, but then this annoying kid came on and because it seems like I was the first one to not ignore him somehow we became bestest friends forever
edit: the only lack of penetration issues I had (giggity giggity) were -> on Cul de Sac there was a crushed van in the corner of a street that had a hitbox like 1.5 feet out from the edge of the actual material of the van. In my MBT I managed to get trapped on the wrong side of a foot high chickenwire fence and had to backtrack because apparently a jet engined 62 metric ton can of whoopass has less mass than a 200 gram wire.
It's weird how the bolt-action rifle doesn't seem to have an area it excels in. Considering there's no hold breath, it has more sway and slower ROF, so why isn't it a 1-shot kill to the body.
Odd balance decision.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
I was excited when I heard last week that I was receiving this for review.
Barely 15 minutes in, and I already hated it. An hour later I can barely muster the drive to keep playing.
It's bad enough they ruined their big "realistic" opening about America's decline with a gigantic "PRESS X TO SKIP. GO ON, DO IT. DO IIIIIIT", and sullied things further with some honestly awful graphics (I know not every developer has COD money, but there were launch games that looked better than this), but not only does it have bullshit difficulty and limited ammo, it also managed to come up with the most unlikeable AI companion of the year in under 30 minutes.
How bad is he? He tells a baby to shut up...in the middle of a firefight.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

The M16 is actually single shot, high damage, long range, low recoil. It actually surprised me that it's Single Shot. It's really bad up close, so it's more of a Designated Marksman weapon/stand off weapon.
The XM10 based on it's stats, has same damage of SCAR-L, same rate of fire as M-16, same accuracy as M4, same range as M4/M-16, same reload speed as all rifles, but a lower ammo count.
I really dislike how games implement machine guns but I guess that's for balance. With no bullet penetration and low damage, they're really only good for downing drones or damaged helicopters. Suppressive fire doesn't exist at all. The only good thing I like about how they implemented the machine guns are that you really need to fire in bursts to stay accurate, 3-5, just like in real life.
The M16 also has three round burst. You should give that a try.
how do you switch firing modes?
You use your thumb to flip the fire selector from semi auto to three round burst. I imagine the game has some button to do the same thing.
The M16A1 had full auto, but they discovered that soldiers in Vietnam were wasting too much ammo with it, so they restricted it to three round burst for the M16A2. The M16A4 has an RIS system built in and also has three round burst, IIRC.

.....
I was talking about in the game it is only single shot. I know that in real life it has a 3rb as I've fired the damn thing more times than I care to. So back to my point, there is no 3rb M16 in the game, there is no switch firing modes. I've read the manual and it makes no mention of it anywhere.
I wish people would stop ragging on the graphics, they aren't top of the line but they aren't by any means bad. This is the same forum that has a hard one for going on and on about how Graphics aren't the most important thing ever and when a game comes out without top of the line that's what gets shit on?
I mean the game is by no means perfect your two partners in the game are at best, un-interesting, and at worst you downright want to shoot them yourselves. However the atmosphere and the some of the scenes portrayed in the game are amazing
Late Campaign spoiler
The Part where you go to get the helicopter from the survivalist farm. One you start getting into a fight with thos guys I even said outload before I shot that these were Americans not koreans. Maybe it's not a unique experience for everyone else but I've never had a game make me doubt pulling the trigger before.
Albeit the campaign needs to be longer and they could do with adding stuff to multiplayer, Maps, Guns, game Modes. But it is nowhere near as bad as some peope are making it out and Graphics is the dumbest thing to nit pick about.
Buying this for the campaign is like buying SSF4 for the arcade mode.
So wait. Buying the game that has a campaign that has been hyped from here to the moon, every fucking day for ages, from the writer to the "realism" of shocking things, how you're just an average joe not a soldier, and oh yeah it also has some multiplayer, is like buying a game that is inherently multiplayer, has always been such, and everyone knows this, for its vs CPU play?
Yeah.
No.
If they wanted the game to go on the merits of its multiplayer they would have hyped that more than a casual mention every now and then after gushing about its supposed groundbreaking presentation, white castle, hooters, babys in dumpsters, murdering of parents in front of children, red dawn writer, etc etc.
They wanted people to buy it for the campaign. That's all that was hyped, ever. Just because they also mentioned it had multiplayer doesn't make it the focus of the game, or somehow "obvious" what people should be buying it for.
Don't act like people disappointed in the main feature that was presented in all preview media be it advertising, interviews, previews, etc, are doing it wrong.

Yeah pretty sure that consensus was reached page 1.

It was terrible.
edit: the only lack of penetration issues I had (giggity giggity) were -> on Cul de Sac there was a crushed van in the corner of a street that had a hitbox like 1.5 feet out from the edge of the actual material of the van. In my MBT I managed to get trapped on the wrong side of a foot high chickenwire fence and had to backtrack because apparently a jet engined 62 metric ton can of whoopass has less mass than a 200 gram wire.
Odd balance decision.

In his defense, the baby was being kind of a dick.
I just had a massive killstreak in my first online game. The personal uav sweep is great.
how do you switch firing modes?
I mean the game is by no means perfect your two partners in the game are at best, un-interesting, and at worst you downright want to shoot them yourselves. However the atmosphere and the some of the scenes portrayed in the game are amazing
Late Campaign spoiler
Albeit the campaign needs to be longer and they could do with adding stuff to multiplayer, Maps, Guns, game Modes. But it is nowhere near as bad as some peope are making it out and Graphics is the dumbest thing to nit pick about.
