I'll be totally honest with you. I paid zero attention to the "hype" for this game. I only checked in on the thread because I was interested in how the MP plays. Almost everyone here says don't buy it for the campaign.
I don't read game mags, and I don't watch TV. I guess that's how I avoided being aware of all this hype you are talking about. To me I saw a poster in Gamestop, went "oh cool" and just decided to see if there was a thread about it.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
The M16 also has three round burst. You should give that a try.
how do you switch firing modes?
You use your thumb to flip the fire selector from semi auto to three round burst. I imagine the game has some button to do the same thing.
The M16A1 had full auto, but they discovered that soldiers in Vietnam were wasting too much ammo with it, so they restricted it to three round burst for the M16A2. The M16A4 has an RIS system built in and also has three round burst, IIRC.
.....
I was talking about in the game it is only single shot. I know that in real life it has a 3rb as I've fired the damn thing more times than I care to. So back to my point, there is no 3rb M16 in the game, there is no switch firing modes. I've read the manual and it makes no mention of it anywhere.
Well, that's no good. That's no good at all. Why would this game depict modern warfare if it can't even get something as simple as the M16's three round burst right? Everyone knows that assault rifles have fire selectors that let you switch from semi auto to three round burst to full auto. This makes no sense. All the Rainbow Six games let you switch between firing modes. This is an important detail that the Homefront developers just forgot? That's inexcusable. All they had to do was map it to the D-pad, am I right? In Medal of Honor singleplayer, you could press the D-pad and it would switch firing modes. It made sense. I don't know where they thought people didn't need firing mode switches anymore. Sometimes, you might want to just fire single shots, to conserve ammo. Other times, you might want three round burst or full auto for more firepower. That's the whole point of having multiple firing modes. Homefront is supposed to take place in the modern world. It's supposed to be a game about modern combat, of a sort. Modern assault rifles all have this feature, why would they drop it from the game? Who do they think they are? All the Rainbow Six games were very good about being realistic and having the ability to switch fire modes! Those games were amazing, why have we gone backwards as the years have gone by? Who thinks this is a good idea?! I don't. I wish Rainbow Six would make a resurgence, I really do! This sort of casual nonsense has to end, damnit. M16A2s are renowned for having three round burst. It's what makes them different from M4s and CAR15s, which fire full auto. Homefront takes place in the future, but that doesn't excuse the lack of fire modes. Are future guns going to be designed without fire mode selectors? I doubt it, I really doubt it. And I can guarantee you that in the future, people are still going to be using M16A2s and A4s. In the near future, those guns will still be readily available.
Thus, Homefront is a bad game. Call of Duty 4 also didn't let you switch firing modes. COD4 was also a terrible game, purporting to be about "modern warfare." What a sham. What a bloody sham that was. There's nothing appropriate about calling your game Modern Warfare when you can't even portray the fire mode switching. This is a basic feature of most assault rifles and submachine guns. It is paramount to the experience. The lack of this is a disgrace.
Anyway, I just controlled a game* with the APC. Man that thing was insane! And by the time they finally blew it up, I had enough points to call in a MBT! Which wasn't nearly as good in an anti-infantry role as the APC.

This is either the best sarcasm ever or the worst thing I have ever read on a forum.
I was excited when I heard last week that I was receiving this for review.
Barely 15 minutes in, and I already hated it. An hour later I can barely muster the drive to keep playing.
It's bad enough they ruined their big "realistic" opening about America's decline with a gigantic "PRESS X TO SKIP. GO ON, DO IT. DO IIIIIIT", and sullied things further with some honestly awful graphics (I know not every developer has COD money, but there were launch games that looked better than this), but not only does it have bullshit difficulty and limited ammo, it also managed to come up with the most unlikeable AI companion of the year in under 30 minutes.
How bad is he? He tells a baby to shut up...in the middle of a firefight.
I couldn't believe how annoying that guy was. And people bitched about Rico in Killzone 2 being annoying. This guy is like Rico and RAMIREZ DO EVERYTHING combined.
I don't care too much about graphics, but the levels were so linear and uninteresting that it just made it even worse for me. There's one level where you get to fly a chopper that was kind of neat, but it may as well have been on rails because if you get more than 10 feet from the trucks you're supposed to be protecting, it gives you a big warning to turn around.
One thing I'm going to point out from your post: the M4 has a 3rb. In fact, modern M-16 and M4's only the following selector switches: safety, fire, 3rb. That's it. The stopped fielding full auto M-16 and M4 many many years ago. If you want to get all anal about realism, the M-16 does not do more damage than the M-4. It has a longer range due to barrel length, but they use the same caliber bullet. In fact, if you want to be anal about it, all weapons in most games are wrong.
Anyways, back to game talk. I'm enjoying the shit out of this game's multi. I didn't watch/read or listen to any hype about this prior to release, my roommate bought it, I watched a few rounds of him playing multi and decided to get it. Having a blast.
Bonus: They seemed to fix the initial server issues as I'm having no trouble getting into matches now.

The M4A1, which I was referring to and which is the most commonly depicted M4 in video games, has a safe/semi auto/fully auto trigger grouping. That's how it's depicted in the Rainbow Six games. You're right, the M16 and M4 both use 5.56mm NATO. The M16 has a longer barrel and this produces a higher velocity round, hence the increased range. I think most video game developers just figure that a higher velocity round equals increased damage. *shrug*

Yeah, I think so too. Crytek hasn't let me down yet, I thought Crysis was a great FPS. Probably the last FPS to really amaze and impress me. Which is kinda sad when you think about it, since it came out in oh, 2007. Great weapon accessorization system, fantastic graphics, and large open spaces for very dynamic firefights to play out, instead of linear, tightly scripted corridors/shooting galleries to trudge through. Also had a rather lengthy campaign!
Can't uh, can't wait for Tuesday, man.

I'm just going to point out that Call of Duty alleged to be the game about Modern Warfare. Homefront made no such claims. Homefront is a game about shooting Koreans in White Castles. Also, rainbow 6 games stopped being "realistic" back in the late 90's so I dunno why you've put your horse on those 35 inch chrome donks. . .
unfortunately most modern FPS developers balance the guns by doing really stupid unrealistic shit, like CoD's shotguns maximum effective range is measured in milimeters.
I'd be totally happy to play some ArmA2 with you sometime though.

I'm 100% serious. This sorta stuff really grinds my gears.
Then I take back what I said about the graphics being the goosiest thing complained about in this thread.
I'm going to complain about how a company can put out a four hour singleplayer campaign in a game that was hyped for it's singleplayer then look themselves in the mirror every morning without cramming the shaving cream down their throat in an act of seppuku.
I think if this game had the damage model of Bad Company 2, it would be immense.
However, the fact that (a) the servers (at least in the UK) have been booting me out for hours, and (b) the bullets are stopped by any little bit of scenery means I am slowly losing patience with this game.
If Dragon Age 2 wasn't so *meh* I'd be playing that instead...
I kinda wish certain purchases had cooldowns; there's a really irritating trend I'm seeing where people just buy the recon drone right at the start of the match, then just keep buying it endlessly until they buy an attack helicopter.
So I'm still sitting on the fence to buy this game. The one thing that has me worried is the shotgun. I've heard it described as a "DLC shotgun", and "pre-order shotgun". So, if I want to use it, how do I get it? Was it included in the online pass thing, or am I SOL for not buying a copy earlier?
1. BC is quite nice, adds a little extra to the fun and is a type of addition I hope to see in future games;
BUT
- no bullet penetration
- no destructible terrain in a game where you use tanks and choppers
- no bullet drop
- hitscan weapons
- tiny variety of guns
- will mention this again considering how ridiculous it is: sub 3 hour campaign
I gave it a good try, but it just doesn't cut the mustard. Homefront strikes me as a game which should have been released several years ago and would have been a smash, but in this day and age it doesn't innovate enough and doesn't nail the basics enough to really have any longevity.
Having said that, since it sold very well Kaos will have another crack with Homefront 2 and considering the vast improvement of this game over their previous efforts we could be in for a great sequel.

No, because that is a completely valid complaint as opposed to gun's not having a firing mode toggle.

Most of those issues won't get adressed if they keep using the Unreal Engine though. And they will.
I understand the campaign is short, but it seems to keep getting shorter. Is there sequence breaking in the game?
So far I'm enjoying myself. This game isn't "OMG! I'll never stop playing this because it's so awesome!" but it isn't fucking retarded stupid. I haven't done any Multiplayer yet but I'm able to follow the single player storyline really well, something I didn't do in MW2 and kinda did in BLOPS. If I had to be a game reviewer and give it some sort of "score", I'd say 3 out of 5 for the Single Player. It's not doing something we haven't seen before, but it isn't doing anything wrong in the single player.

Red Orchestra is Unreal 2 and it has fully modeled ballistics. The next one is Unreal 3 and in addition to that it has destructible terrain and bullet penetration.

That's cool, and thanks for the info. Seems to me that the RO guys have quite a different concept in mind. But do you think they would expand Homefront in such a way? If the game keeps it's following, we'll get a sequel with more of the same but better, in stead of a game that shifts more towards realism at the cost of fast paced gameplay. If the console specs will even allow for destructable environments, I think that's one thing that might make it in. And I agree that it would add a whole lot to the game.

Well, no, I don't think any of that is necessarily going into a Homefront sequel just because they could do it. But adding destructible environments, bullet penetration, and ballistics doesn't remove fast paced gameplay, and in fact the first two speed up the pace of gameplay.

True, true, I should have said "arcade like" instead of "fast paced". I'm poor with words today.
Btw, I had the game in my hands half an hour ago, the "resist edition" which includes the shotgun and a few unlocks like the SCAR-L for 45 euros. I just got home empty handed, still doubting. Heh.

I can't wait to unlock BC, so I can stop getting spawncamped by a sniper on a fence.
Also, still fiddling with the mouse sensitivity settings.
I kinda wish certain purchases had cooldowns; there's a really irritating trend I'm seeing where people just buy the recon drone right at the start of the match, then just keep buying it endlessly until they buy an attack helicopter.
I do that! But generally I climb into an APC after a few recon drones. To chain an APC into another one basically requires that you don't eat two hellfires as soon as you call it in. Past that you're golden.
So i just finished the single player game, and i know i'm late.
But four hours? Seriously? How can you hype up the game's story and then ship four hours of content. Sorry, the excuse that you were fleshing out the multiplayer in favor of finishing your game just sounds either lazy, or you lied to us. Both could be true.
The fact that the game's climax has you fighting on the Golden Gate Bridge, and the view you get of the soon to be massive naval and air battle in the San Francisco Bay makes it all the more aggravating. The entire time you're navigating your way up the bridge's towers, you keep hearing about all of this cool shit that is happening around you: We've taken Alcatraz! Naval divisions have broken out of San Diego and are traveling up the coastline to help now! Huge firefight on the Bay Bridge that isn't going well! Yeah, you're probably really excited huh, because you're about to see some incredible action set pieces in one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, so get your ass across that bridge buddy.
Hah, kidding, we're going to cut to the asshole that you can't stand traveling around with going all MOTHERFUCKER and bombing himself along with an armored column to save your allies. Maybe that was your gift to us, because that guy was about two shades away from chugging some Full Throttle (TM) and BMXing his way into the Presidio.
Too long, didn't read?
Absolutely inexcusable.
You know what the saddest part is? The game starts off so strong, the images at the beginning of the are pretty powerful and different, and then it slowly falls apart. What a waste.

is the single player story good? In my experience a short good story is better than a long mediocre story.
Just had a 2 matches that involves spawning, running 2 feet then getting sniped by someone across the map I had no chance of seeing. I initially liked it, but 7 maps, 3 hour single, I regret buying this. Hopefully Kaos is quick to add to it, other wise I see the multi dying fast.

Multiplayer dying fast? That doesn't seem very likely for a game from this developer!

I bought it friday afternoon, played through it and was finished 2hrs 54mins later, not counting two breaks I took to eat and chat on the phone.
Ok, I will admit that I am pretty good at these sorts of games (once I got over the annoying ADS slow down it seems to have) and didn't really die all that much (which would add time due to restarts)... but really, that's no excuse.
I didn't really linger in any one area either, so I suppose I could have added another 30-45 mins in loitering/ trying different attack approaches had I failed on any set pieces I guess...

They must have patched when the servers where down for maintainence, I have a much easier time with multi now.
So multiplayer in this is pretty darn fun and I havnt run into any troubles yet but have a question. If I get a friend to also buy this on PC can we play in a party somehow or are we doomed to be on the same server but different teams (thanks to team scamble) constantly like in BLOPS?

I haven't seen a White Castle in years. I wanna go to one and eat gross tiny sandwiches with our Korean Overlords
Btw, I had the game in my hands half an hour ago, the "resist edition" which includes the shotgun and a few unlocks like the SCAR-L for 45 euros. I just got home empty handed, still doubting. Heh.
Also, still fiddling with the mouse sensitivity settings.
I do that! But generally I climb into an APC after a few recon drones. To chain an APC into another one basically requires that you don't eat two hellfires as soon as you call it in. Past that you're golden.
XBLGT:Banzeye SC2: Apollo.394
I haven't played the single player yet.
XBLGT:Banzeye SC2: Apollo.394
Multiplayer dying fast? That doesn't seem very likely for a game from this developer!
Wait no yeah it does.
