I'll be traveling from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Comfort, Texas. I'll be using Google Maps to plan my route, but I'd like to be aware of any road construction before I leave. I don't travel enough to need or want a GPS unit.
So I'm wondering if you good folks of H&A have some useful planning sites you could point my way.
Thanks!

AAA is very important. If your car breaks down you'll be glad you have it (It isn't that expensive either)
I did a 4 day move from the Rockies to DC: Did a heavy reliance on Google Maps which was our savior
-Construction should be represented on google maps if you print maps just prior to the trip.
- If you have a high tech phone, it also can help you out on this front by giving you a live traffic report on the phones googlemap service
Are you traveling by yourself? Have some audiobooks or podcasts on hand. Or music you won't get tired of.
Traveling with others? Be sure to have a lot of music that will be good for the entire party. Also, have a way to communicate frustrations if any should arise. If you don't then after the trip you guys might not want to talk to each other awhile.

AAA has helped me on multiple occasions across the Eastern US and even Canada (CAA honored my AAA coverage while I was there) so I don't think there is any limit on your coverage zone. Get the gold membership (costs around $100, gives you 4 free tows up to 100 miles). You can usually make your membership cost back in maps and discounts, and if you use even one tow, door unlocking service, or gas delivery, it pays for itself for several years immediately as well as saving you a ton of hassle.
Well, an acquaintance of mine had their car die 2 states away on the side of an interstate, and AAA basically said "that sucks, you're out of your coverage zone."
This is a story I've had several people tell me has happened to them.

If so, look to camp out along the way.

So, YMMV.
