The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I just built a computer with an EVGA 8800 GTS. I have an LCD and an old CRT, which I'd like to use in a dual monitor setup. I need to have different resolutions on them, obviously. With my laptop this was easily set up through the regular Windows display options. On the new computer, I don't have that option there, so as I understand it I need to use the nVidia controls.
Going into the nVidia control panel, multiple monitor setup, I don't have the option to use nVidia DualView (which from what I understand is the same as what Windows would do.) The only options I have are to switch between using each of the displays singly, or to use a "span" mode where the two displays show up as one really wide or tall display, which forces the same resolution on both, which looks like ass (as you might expect.)
I tried installing the nVidia Forceware, but it tells me that it doesn't detect compatible hardware (and looking in the list I don't see the Geforce 8800 listed). Is DualView something that just isn't supported with this chipset yet? Is there someway to get that option to show up? Should I / can I get Windows to manage the displays instead of the nVidia software? Will Jack find out about Claire's ill-begotten lovechild?

It could be that nVidia still hasn't got a set of WHQL certified drivers for the 8800s yet.

It's true, people are thinking of suing. Not saying I agree with the lawsuit personally, I'm of the opinion that you reap what you sow when you opt for bleeding-edge hardware and software. That's just how I found out there were driver issues with the 8800 under Vista.
Ah. Well I'm running XP Pro, but I suppose it could still be a lack of released drivers. Oh well, I can survive just fine with one monitor until such time as they release the drivers.
You could try UltraMon. I use it all the time, and it fixes all of my complaints about Windows dual monitor support/nVidia dual monitor support.
They have a fully-functional 30-day trial, so see if it works for you. I think it's like $40 to keep. I can't live without it now, so I paid for it.
embrik on
"Damn you and your Daily Doubles, you brigand!"
I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
ultramon is good, but fyi.. independent resolution support (different res's for each monitor) only works if all your monitors are the same aspect ratio.
i found out the hardway when i hooked up my lcd tv on the secondary port.
I read a bit more on the nVidia forums, and someone said something about their card working better if both the displays were on when the computer was turned on. I also switched which plug each of the displays was plugged into (I judged that since the POST was showing up on the CRT that plug must be the "primary" one somehow.)

not sure if the ultramon guy fixed this yet.
I'm pretty sure that's not true. I have a 16x9 2407wfp running 1920x1200, and a 5:4 running 1280x1024 just fine.

So, anyway, it works now. Woot, thanks, and lock.
