Heard about this today and I thought that I would share this marvlous new sport with all of you fine folks.
It's exactly what it sounds like: Chess and boxing all rolled into one awesome package.
They do a round of boxing and then a round of speed chess for 11 rounds. There are already clubs all over the world and the american "scene" seems to be centered in LA.

I, like apparently everyone else, thought this was going to be a wu tang thread and am mildly disapointed

From the slums of Shaolin, Wu Tang Clan strikes again. The RZA, the GZA, Old Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killa, and the M E T H O D MAN!
They leave Masta Killa out of that for some reason. I'm wondering if he was late joining the group.

This doesn't seem so much like a hybrid sport as just playing two different games at the same time
If it was melded together more seamlessly it'd be more interesting
it's a good hybrid in the sense that they're both extremely mental activities (I still refuse to call chess a sport) in very different ways. To be good at chess you need to be aware of all of the moves your opponant has already made and may make, try keeping that in mind when you're getting punched in the mouth.
I first heard about Chess Boxing years and years. I love the fact that you can win by check mate or knock out. I'd love to try it but I'm so awful at chess. I've never won a game and I've played maybe 50 games.
Having absolutely no idea how Wu-Tang connects to chessboxing, I still like the idea of the sport. It's no stranger than a biathlon (cross-country skiing combined with rifle shooting). Downside being it's generally not going to have a lot of qualified competitors over here; seems more of a Russian sport. You've gotta have a boxer who's good at chess and/or a chess player who's good at boxing, and over there is where you're likely to find most of those.
I'd want it to be someplace totally live where I can watch it around here.

it's cool though, wu tang calls roll on every other track so he had ample opportunities to make himself known

Yeah I really like the idea behind Chess Boxing.
I've heard that there are several different styles of play as well, with some players electing to focus heavily on one aspect of the game. Tiny players trying to avoid being knocked out to get back to playing chess and so on.

I can't even imagine trying to play chess after being repeatedly punched in the face
I mean, not exactly what I would call a spectator sport, but definitely a full body work out.

whenever you take a piece, you get to jam it into your opponent

Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
Yeah, I was hoping for the boxing fighters being chess pieces in a game that two people were playing.
You must think first...before you move.

I've seen news stories about this "new underground sport" literally dozens of times for the past 10 years or so.
