Expect the next update sometime later today (probably in the afternoon) and I'll give you a hint about the next contest.

This thread makes me want to fire up my old advance copy of VI. The last thing I was doing was trying to tackle the Dragon Cave content. I seem to remember my (near) level 99 parties getting their asses kicked pretty hard. I agree that the advanced port was the best of the later generation iterations of the game. I still have my old SNES cartridge of the game in my closet and will probably never get rid of it. One because it holds much sentimental value and two because I bought it off a friend for something on the order of $50+.
So wait you're saying that the VC one will be the SNES version and the PSN will have the PSX version? Are the loads that much worse on the PSX version because I only have the PS3, no wii but I want this game without feeling like a dirty pirate or having to trust an ebay seller from shanghai to be sending a legit copy.
Or are we just getting ripped off because sony/square already had a psx port and it was easier for them to put that up than get a better port from the original?

...Sony does not have the rights to the SNES version.
PSN gets the PSX version because...well, the PS3 and PSP have really good PSX emulation. Rights do not figure into this equation. PSN classic games are PSX games because well, that's what it does.
The big problem with that though is how the PSX dealt with load times. It didn't just load whatever was needed and then went to the action, it timed all of the loads. So even though the entirety of FF VI could comfortably fit in RAM it will still have the ridiculous loads of the PSX version.
I didn't mean rights wise so much as all the port work had already been done for the psx version so it required little effort to put that port on PSN compared to re-porting the SNES version that the Wii is getting
Your hair shares the tone of all men you encounter; green with envy that you do not belong to them.
I liked this one a lot.
I'll post the winner when he gives me his name choice along with the next update...which if you know the game will be short as shit.
CONTEST FOUR AND RULES UPDATE: Along with the PM of your answer, please give me the name you want (or path you want, or party you want, whatever the contest is for.)
The fourth contest, for the right to (re)name this fine fellow is: The best MSpaint art of Sabin Rene Figaro.
This fine fellow for those of you who are new to the game. Deadline, 11:59 pm April 21, 2011.
Hello, Beautiful. Let's say I flip this coin, if it comes up heads I'll buy you a drink and we'll to get to know each other, tails and you won't see me again.
"Mwahahaha. Post to come in a bit. Got some cleaning up to do."
I just realized I don't have a good title for this next post and it's bugging me to no end. Usually I come up with one at the end of the last installment, and now it has been days.
 Everywhere you look, everywhere you look...
Stamos does this animation a lot.
Full House Royalties apparently make you royalty and can buy a Steampunk castle.
...Yes.
Wink, wink, nudge nudge, say no more!
Good riddance. (Did he sell Gaia as a sex slave? Find out next time!)
That's fairly creepy, oh king stamos.
Why are you being so kind to me? Is it because of my...abilities?
I'll give you three reasons. First of all, your beauty has captivated me! Second...I'm dying to know if I'm your type! I guess your...abilities...would rank a distant third.
...? What's the matter?
Charisma check...FAILED.
Guess my technique's getting a bit rusty...
Hmm... I suppose a normal girl would have felt something from those words. But...not me...
and we're free to explore the castle.
We were going to do that anyways. Figaro Castle is pretty small until you realize that certain parts can only be accessed by going outside via the east and west wings.
Pretty accurate rumor.
Magic Nazis with Steampunk Mecha
Unguarded chest on the way to the top of the keep's highest tower.
PHOENIX DOWN: When used on a KO'd party member it revives them, you've probably seen these before. Has some very interesting uses when used on certain enemies.
Pretty cool view. Those fans do spin.
Our first shopkeeper! He sells Tools, which are the weapons used by Stamos for his character specific ability also named Tools.
Apparently he doesn't mind if we rob him of his low level consumables. Potion heals minimal hit points and antidote cures poison, but free is free.
Standard shopkeeper menu. Buy at full price (except at this shop under certain circumstances), sell for half price (used is used, and better rates than Gamestop!) standard RPG fare.
Buy menu: Characters raise their hands if they can use the item. These are Stamos only so the crowd stays silent...for now.
Pictures explain it so I don't have to!
But, but, I want another one! Fine then, let's head to the other shop (after buying the other two tools.
This guy runs your standard item shop.
Ether: Heals a decent amount of MP. Gold Needle: Heals Petrification. Echo Screen: Heals Silence. Sleeping Bag: Used at Savepoints, heals one party member's HP/MP. Tent: Sleeping Bag for whole party.
Speaking about Gold Needle, here is a free one, a savings of 200 Gil!
Probably orphen souls or some such.
Does this make Figaro Steampunk Italy?
...debatable. Anyways the east wing here has the royal library, so let's check that out.
I could show him but I don't want to waste the MP.
I can feel the "sarcasm" coming from those "airquotes."
This is what happens when you enter the west wing room.
Looks like the Olsen twin's money ran out.
Yep.
Possibly too much information?
... (Actual Quote)
The stairs down lead to the furthest parts of the east and west wings...and you need to go to both to advance the story!
Chocobo calvary all says the same thing...but I'll give them a pass for being awesome.
East Side!
A drab guest bedroom.
I wonder if we're going there next. Time to explore the basement.
East side has this old man here. (I love the common NPC sprites in this game)
and if we try for the stairs leading down...
He's not fucking kidding.
This is where Stamos keeps the riffraff.
Worse like what?
Oh god no, not an FF V cameo! Lets get out of here and explore the west side.
...You've got to be shitting me.
Steampunk Poland, Belgium, and France?
Queue sad music.
Stamos is a crybaby...to the surprise of no one (FF III SNES translation was really wonky on this scene.
Fairly spoilerish.
This contest so far has two awesome enteries. I hope I get more. Fire up your MS Paint!
NEXT TIME: MARRIAGE OF FIGARO II: HERE COMES THE BRIDE!
Later today I'm going to update the character profiles in the first post. I might delay the MSpaint contest until mid Saturday, but the two enteries I have so far are so good it's scary.
I figured. I accidentally took Boktai with on my easter vacation instead of FF6. Nothing quite like trying to play a gameboy advance in direct sunlight to enhance one's patience.
I forgot how boring getting the Paladin Shield is. Also: trying to steal a Minerva off a Pugs.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.
Allright, this is the second time a random network issue has eaten this fifth update. I'm going to calm down, get some work done, and try again this afternoon...and start writing them in a word processor.
THE ENTIRE SECOND HALF OF THE GAME IS NOTHING BUT A FREE CHOICE-A-THON. You only need to visit about five places to beat the game and recruit only three characters, including the one you start with.
You know, I only beat this once way back in the day ('96 or so), and I used a guide, so
I recruited all 14 characters back into the group in the World of Ruin. However, I've always been curious what happens in the ending sequence if you didn't pick up everyone in the WoR. I take it there's some sort of deus ex machina of everyone appearing on the floating continent at the last second so that it makes sense for them to be shown during the escape/credits scenes?

Let me see if I can go off memory...
You can beat the game with just Celes, Setzer and Edgar, the only required to get characters. If you make it to Kefka with these 3, Terra shows up to fight but no one else. Apparently this gets you a special ending but I've never done it myself. I think the ending for anyone who isn't present is either skipped, or shows a type of "In Memory Of" thing.

Sounds like I need to scour Youtube this weekend to see if someone has a video beating the game this way.
Honestly, it's not worth it to see the changes, it is sort of worth it from a challenge perspective. Just the idea of it is pretty cool, but you can get enough good equipment to make it fairly trivial.
I ended up finding a CES completion of the game on Youtube this weekend. It was of the GBA version, but I have to assume it was more or less unchanged from the SNES version.
And it actually makes for a much worse ending, since every "escape" scene for a character you don't have is replaced by a slow pan of the area where you met the character/the character's home with the character's portrait in the upper corner. Basically you get a ton of "dead air" in the ending sequence with a CES run. I'd have to watch a full character ending to see how much the C, E, and S scenes differed, but I don't think much changed.
Also...
Terra does show up on the continent, like you said, but you apparently don't get to use her in the final battle, and you just get the "in memory of" for her portion of the ending scene as well, even though she (sort of) rejoined your team. I guess she only flies on up for story purposes.
Correct. Its not an ending you're supposed to get by any means. You might not find everything before the end but they expect you to be able to do most of it. It's like trying the Bucket in Chrono Trigger a little over halfway in the game. You can beat Lavos...but you probably won't.
The basic gameplay idea behind an "easy" CES run is to do everything possible without recruiting any characters so that your equipment is at least decent. The only positive is that you only need to equip three people and can switch vital equips for the Solo operation in Kefka's tower. You pretty much need a ribbon always equipped for the extra safety.
You can clear a hell of a lot of the WoR without recruiting anyone though.
RETURNING THIS WEEKEND, LASTING THE REST OF THE SUMMER.
Why did I abandon it in the first place? Got busy at work including three business trips. Then my brother got married...with his bachelor party three states away and his wedding in another country...where my grandmother happens to live and who needed some serious gardening done.
Why is it returning? Nintendo decided to reward my overseas trip by releasing the second best available version of the game in North America. FF III on the Wii's Virtual Console is a fine game and was literally the second thing I did after coming home...despite owning at least six different copies of the game.
Will updates be regular? I'm thinking one this weekend, then either Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. But yes, discipline this time.

It's in the spirit of MSpaint art, I don't want people spending too much time on it.

If the weather sucks, it'll be early friday, if it doesn't, it'll be late. Next week's schedule will be a regular one.
