Well for one, it doesn't hurt to hold it for more than 10 minutes.
nor was it designed as an afterthought to the original PS pad where they put the analogue sticks wherever they still had room on the controller... The Dualshock is the least ergonomic pad ever and it's ridiculous that it hasn't been redesigned yet.
Well, there was the PS3 boomerang controller. But then people threw a fit and we ended up with a DualShock with crappy triggers.

The boomerang controller would have been godawful, just so we're clear
Let's not try and make that shit sound like it was ever a good idea
The average 360 fanboy doesn't like the Dual Shock because it's not what they're used to.
Really? I've been using the Playstation controller in one form or another for what, 16 years now? I'll never 'get used to it' or like it. A major part of the reason I became interested in, and pre-ordered, the 360 was after using (and loving) the controller, for the record I never liked (or bought) the oXbox.
A lot of people say that XBL is a superior online service, but honestly, it's no different from the PSN other than the pricetag. They both have a storefront, they both have games on demand, they both have Netflix, they both have multiplayer. Paying $60 a year for peer to peer multiplayer is pretty stupid, though.
Sigh... I've never had to pay the full asking price, couple of times I've got a whole year of Live for free in one bundle or another. Live is often on sale through the dash itself, even. However, the way the 360 handles friends lists, parties and cross-game communication / game invites makes Live infinitely better than the PSN, a pleasure to use, I'd never get any Friday night drunken gaming sorted with my regular posse without it. So no, they aren't honestly the same. Live is better than PSN, but it wil cost you about a pint a month, if you can't afford that, or have some 'moral opposition' to the idea of paying for an online service 360 isn't for you.
The PS3 does have a few features that set it above the 360, namely Blu Ray support for high definition movies, and Bluetooth support so you can use any standard Bluetooth headset while playing online. This is nice if you already have a Bluetooth headset, which beats paying an additional $40 for the 360 wireless one.
Blu Ray is nice, but Bluetooth support means very little. You get a wired headset with your 360, and I don't have a Bluetooth headset, so I'd have to buy one for PS3. Spare headsets for the 360 cost £5, you don't need a wireless one. Or if you have Kinect, you don't actually need one at all.
And if you want to keep talking about price (insert hookers comic here), since you can get a 360 and Kinect for the price of a PS3, the 360 also has that I suppose. Setting up Move for two players on top of the cost of a PS3 adds a lot to the price. And man, Kinect workout games can really kick your arse.
Which means, technically, bang for your buck, 360 makes you sexier. :rotate:
How many genres outside of fighters use the Dpad these days?
If you plan on playing with your friends, it simply comes down to what console they have. Most of my friends have 360s and PCs so I have a gaming PC and a 360. If they used PS3's I would have bought a PS3. Games are only as fun as the community you play them with and having irl friends to play them with goes a long way in helping that.

The Saturn controller had the best d-pad.
And guess what? The USB version is PS3 compatible.
Therefore, PS3 wins that category.
(It does not work on the 360, believe me, I tried.)

A PS3 is $299 here in America. A 360 with Kinect is $299 as well... but it's a 4GB system. If you want a 360 with Kinect and a Hard Drive, you'll need to shell out $400, which is $50 more than a PS3 Move bundle (which is not only cheaper, but also comes with 70GB more hard drive space). You could even get a Navigation controller for Move and still have $20 leftover for a Greatest hits game or Chinese Food.
If you already had a 360 and wanted to get Kinect, you'd need to shell out $140. If you already had a PS3 and wanted to get Move you'd need to shell out $90. If you already had a PS3 and wanted to get Move for two players, you'd have to shell out... $140, the same cost as Kinect.
You are correct, though. Kinect games can totally kick your ass.
My vote is for the 360 because I much prefer its library of games (both retail and digital exclusives), better system interface/UI, and great controller. I have a PS3, but I hardly ever use it.
The PS3 has way more titles that I want to play (by that I mean, the 360 doesn't have any titles that I'm even remotely interested in that aren't available on the PS3 or PC). It's an excellent Bluray player. I don't care enough about online play to pay for it. I vastly prefer the PS3 controller. As such, I own a PS3 and not a 360. I have no intention of buying a 360. It would be a total waste of money for me.
My advice:
Which system has more titles you're interested in? That's really the only factor you should consider. You can let a lot of other personal preferences slide if you're being consistently entertained by games you're interested in. Search Wikipedia for "List of Playstation 3 games" and "List of Xbox 360 games". Do a raw count of games you'd like to own for either console. Don't count cross-platform games that you can play on whatever you already have (PC, presumably). You'll get a really good idea of how much a particular console will bring to your gaming situation by doing something as simple as that.

You know, there are quite a few people who find the PS3 controller to be comfortable (myself included). The average 360 fanboy doesn't like the Dual Shock because it's not what they're used to.
that's actually not true, at all, since there was no 360 controller before the 360 so it was new for any "fanboy" as you put it. Alas over 10 years of people using shitastic dualshocks has made people so used to them that they don't realize there is a better way and have convinced themselves that they like the dualshock.

You'd lose that bet. In the US at least, most multiplatform games sell as much or more on the 360, which is not surprising since a lot more people own 360s than PS3s in the US (although worldwide, it's a much closer race). Even in the rare situations where the PS3 version outsells the 360 version, it's rarely more than 60-40.

The d-pad on the 360 controller really is shit.
The analogue sticks on th 360 controller really are better than the Dualshock.
If you play import games, getting a PS3 should be a no-brainer.
I have both, and a powerful gaming PC. I have had my 360 since launch, although it died recently and now I have a slim. My PS3 is an 80 gb version from back when they had backwards compatibility.
My 360 never sees any action, unless it's a game that isn't available for the PC, that is inferior on the PS3. So, essentially, Red Dead Revolver and Dance Central.
I have more friends with PS3s, so, to me at least, the PS3 has better online, especially since it's free, and I like the UI a whole lot more (the 360's dashboard is awful). Also, my slim came with a tiny HDD, which means no BC for me until I buy a bigger harddrive (something to consider).
If you have a good gaming PC, then any multi-platform game is worthless on the 360. You can play it with better graphics, and a better frame rate, with a 360 controller, and usually at a lower price.
IMO, PS3 all the way.

I say that because Demon's Souls is a PS3 community, and a very devoted one.
They really should have updated the Dualshock to be more dual-analog/trigger friendly, it's hard to deny that. I'm not a huge fan of using it for those types of controls--I wasn't in the PS2 days, anyway, I don't own a PS3. But man it's a feel-good controller when you're doing anything with the d-pad and the face buttons.
The 360 controller has its flaws too, as we've mentioned. Its d-pad is near useless.
But to the OP's question, I think the best points have been made. Do you already have a contingent of friends playing mostly on one or the other system, and if so, is playing online important to you? Do you particularly want to play one system's exclusives, either on-disc or through its online marketplace?
I remember having this debate myself, back in high school when I basically held down a part-time job so that I could afford video games. I ended up buying a PSX and a N64. I couldn't decide between the Final Fantasy series + Metal Gear solid or Zelda + Mario. I had to have both!

I can't think of a single game since 'next gen' where I've needed the d-pad for anything other than switching weapons or activating some simple command, etc (i don't play fighting games anymore though...) so although the 360's dpad is indeed crappy the overall ergonomics of the thing more than make up for it. It literally pains me to play a PS3 exclusive game and have to use the stupid dualshock
also the new 360 gamepad has a new dpad which is apparently much improved
You make a good point--many games are designed to be played solely with the analog stick(s). But if you play JRPGS or similar games, you might find yourself navigating the gameworld with the left analog stick while doing 100% of your menu navigation with the d-pad. That's how I used the Dualshock on PSX and PS2, for many hundreds of hours.
Admittedly, I haven't done much of that in the last five years, but then, my gaming tastes have changed a fair amount. I imagine it's possible to mainly play with the d-pad if you're buying the "right" games.
I'm agreeing with you, basically, just pointing out that it's not impossible to find games that feel good to play on a Dualshock. Also, de gustibus non disputandem est, and so on.

but alot of that is also due to the fact that the way the dualshock is positioned, and this is a hold over to when the controller first came out and there were no analogue sticks stuck down below, the dpad is still the primary spot for your thumb on that controller, which in today's gaming world is ridiculous. The design of the dual shock is incredibly dated and plain uncomfortable when the game you are playing relies on twin sticks and triggers
Don't get either. PSN has been down for the last 2 days and they still haven't fixed it. I just can't recommend consoles anymore, you are so dependent on them allowing games to be updated or keeping services on line and they keep screwing it up. You can buy a video card that blows any console out of the water for half the price nowadays.
I know you asked to choose between PS3 and Xbox, but I'm just completely soured on them. The next generation will be announced soon, they're not going to let themselves be trounced by nintendo, so it's not a great time to buy anyway.

Because the amount of shit the Dualshock gets thrown at it on the internet seems disproportionate.

Hey, you're defending that POS 360 controller. The fucking D-Pad doesn't matter? Maybe if the only play FPSs.
I can't think of a single game since 'next gen' where I've needed the d-pad for anything other than switching weapons or activating some simple command, etc
I really don't think the controller should decide which console you want to buy. In my opinion, hand comfort is secondary to enjoyment, unless it comes at a large price.
In the case of the 360 and PS3, there is not major discomfort when playing on either controller for extended periods of time. Both have their advantages/disadvantages. I don't own the 360, but I do like their controllers. And while I own and love the PS3, their controller does have a few shortcomings.
For example, the analog sticks are convex on the top, which makes holding them down a slight challenge. Not a big deal though. Plus, the R2 and L2 shoulder buttons are the same, convex. This makes holding them down not so easy for extended periods of time. For racing games where you use that as the gas, it can be annoying. Fortunately there are some shoulder clips you can get for mega cheap that instantly fix this, and fix it very very well.
Does any of this stop me from playing for hours and hours on end? No. So I don't think the controller should be the deciding factor, but that's my opinion. All that said, I would prefer the 360 controller for some games, and the Dualshock for others.
I can't think of a single game since 'next gen' where I've needed the d-pad for anything other than switching weapons or activating some simple command, etc
So you don't play any PSN/XBLA games? Your loss.
I've played over 100 and find generally they all use the analogue stick, does that count?
Can't think of any examples from XBLA / XBLIG that have caused problems either.
SSFIV maybe, I bought a SF pad for that, but that was more to do with the 2 x rows of 3 buttons than the d-pad.
you can get a 360 and Kinect for the price of a PS3, the 360 also has that I suppose. Setting up Move for two players on top of the cost of a PS3 adds a lot to the price. And man, Kinect workout games can really kick your arse.

None of this really matters to me though, because I think Move and Kinect and even Waggle are all equally retarded.
Well that's just like, your opinion, man. Personally, I think Waggle and Move are completely retarded half-steps in the right direction while Kinect is quite a laugh, Kinect Sports football, boxing and being particularly fucking excellent, and you can only get it on 360.
The video was a nice touch though, clearly all games play like that, I'm sure you've played them too, before passing judgement.
Also your price comparison above is why I just love list warzzz.
A 250 Gig harddrive is down from £81 to £43, for example.
And while the 160-Gig PS3 has been slashed to £199. The 320 is stil £269. To get Move, the cheapest I can work out the camera, 2 x dildos and 2 x navigation controller at using bundles still comes in between £90- £100. Making the PS3 prices approx £300 and £370 after discounts. Suppose you could get a Move console bundle. Except they are still £349.
See the problem with your calculations are, you are basing everything at hypothetical retail prices, and not real world prices. For example; Kinect hasn't been at RRP since launch. I've seen it sold for £80 new (yet RRP is still £130). RRP prices are obsolete and I can tell you when you factor in actual market prices the 360 comes in ahead of PS3. If it makes you feel any better, it's because the PS3 has that BR drive in it. I have been watching PS3 prices for some time since I fancy some BR action at some point, but that fucker stays at or above £200 for even the cheapest model all the bloody time.
Doesn't much matter though, since clearly using your purchasing model everyone buys everything at full price without considering discounts!
Well that's just like, your opinion, man. Personally, I think Waggle and Move are completely retarded half-steps in the right direction while Kinect is quite a laugh, Kinect Sports football, boxing and being particularly fucking excellent, and you can only get it on 360.

I've played those. It's shit. Still waiting for a motion control game on any system to actually do something where I think to myself hey, this is way more natural and fun than using a standard controller, because it hasn't happened yet.
Opinions!
Also, the dual shock is completely fine. I prefer it to the 360 controller by a fair amount. Neither is a blight though, I reserve that title for the gamecube (comfortable but totally idiotic button placement), dreamcast and N64 controllers.
As for my personal list of questions I ask when I am buying a system;
1. Which system has more exclusives that I want? Be sure to include pc versions of games if you have a good gaming rig.
That's really it. I find everything else tertiary. I could go on about how ps3 makes a sweet media center and has an awesome interface, other people can go on about xbl and various associated features are much better than PSN, but at the end of the day that's all so much noise. Having a nice blu ray player won't mean jack if you really wanted to play gears of war, and no amount of online superiority will matter if what you really wanted is to play Uncharted 1 and 2.

Here in the UK, right now;
250 Gig 360 for £149.
Kinect for £89.
Making a total of £239-ish. You even get a game. And a headset. And a controller which isn't a backwards piece of shit.
Also, this April Microsoft are having a massive 'Kit Out Your Console' peripheral sale;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_159601967_2?ie=UTF8&docId=1000500053&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=062CVKW8HEK28D4MQXAS&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=235695787&pf_rd_i=15826471
A 250 Gig harddrive is down from £81 to £43, for example.
As for my personal list of questions I ask when I am buying a system;
LoL: failboattootoot
You are wrong.
Nice review though dude, I hear IGN are hiring. :P
That's great that you can buy a 360 and a copy of FIFA for three shillings and a King's farthing or whatever the hell you guys use for currency these days, but the guy who made the thread lives in the United States.
