show your character's arms and hands doing something other than hold a gun/melee weapon? When Chell gets knocked down by Wheatley's trap button, you see her arms sprawled out on the floor and move around as she reaches for the portal gun. I had just been thinking a few months ago about how other FPS games have been showing your character's arms doing stuff like this, but it had never been seen in a Valve game. I could be wrong, of course; but I just rewatched the ending of Episode 2 and that sort of thing didn't happen there.
In either Half-Life 1 or 2 when you put the HEV suit on, I think Gordon holds up his hands to show that you are indeed wearing it. Don't quote me on this since it's been a long time since I've played either. It's not quite the same thing, but it's the only other weapon-less case in a valve game I can think of.
Yeah, it's in HL2. 5:25 in this video:

See, this seems pretty clear to me: GlaDOS never deleted Caroline, and she loves Chell like a daughter and wants her to live/be free. And maybe kick the ass out of Black Mesa or something.

But if Chell came back the hardwiring would require her to continue testing.
Was written to be a breakup song, Jonathan Coulton commented when he talked about it in The Final Hours of Portal 2 article/app.

I still don't buy the whole every character in Portal is part of some big dysfunctional family theory

Some really interesting stuff in the dev commentary.

...why am I spoiling something purely technical about the engine? Well, whatever:
The stuff about "world portals" was interesting. Basically, they used portal tech when building the levels - like a hallway could have a portal to a room somewhere else entirely, so they didn't have to rearrange the entire map when they changed stuff around, to get parts out of the way to add new stuff inbetween. Then, when the design was finalized, they snapped the different map chunks together and removed the world portals.

I never thought about it before, but it seems we have a mute male and mute female protagonist.

I do wonder if Chell and Gordon are related?

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot about that. Still, it's something we don't see often, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of that kind of thing in future Valve games.

I doubt Chell and Gordon are related, not much is known about Gordon but that there is no Gman in portal at all would probably suggest that they have no connection.

They mention there's one impossible space left in the game. Does anyone know which one they're referring to? I would assume from memory it's that
The tunnel with the switches is not physically directly underneath GLaDOS' room.

    Also, ending spoilers:
A literal translation of the name 'Caroline' is 'free man'. So there's that.

I don't know, but you've got all this stuff in the comic and beginning of the game about Chell's family, as well as the last name being blanked out.

I mean, it would kind of make sense. One super stubborn mute sent to Aperture, the other to Black Mesa.

Anyway, just an unsubstantiated theory, hence, no spoiler tags.

there is definitely commentary for single player

when you click on commentary mode, it will give you chapter select (maybe only for the capters you have gotten to in normal single player? idk)

the first three or so are coop ones, but all the ones past those are single player ones

Just finished single player. Bit short, but my god was it good.
The final boss fight was amazing. When I saw the moon and it clicked what I had to do I was all "No way. No fucking way."

The Turret Choir was great. I haven't followed any of this extra lore like the RatMan so it came out of nowhere. Makes me wish there was an expanded full song.

Can someone explain the Glados/Caroline link? Caroline was Glados' conscience or something that was only activated when she heard Cave right?

Admittedly it's a bloody shame that the Opera was so short. She has an absurdly good voice, and would love to hear a full length Portal Opera from that woman. (The woman who voices GLaDOS began her career as an Opera singer, and did the Opera herself.) Coulton has quite a bit of talent if he can write techno-ballads and Italian Operas for the same game.

I'm still hard-pressed for deciding a "best moment"
For me, it's either "This is the part where he kills you"

    PotaDOS

    Or Whealey speaking in Portugese.

So far it's Wheatley speaking in Portugese. Love that moment.

It's a common theme in most AI theory that you need some kind of basis for the AI to operate off of. Neural patterns are the current favorite theory; see Cortana from Halo for the most popular example in gaming. So basically what was implied was that Caroline was the original neural pattern for GlaDOS, only with extreme reprogramming to better emulate Cave Johnson's beliefs for the company.

There's a point early on (or maybe it was in Portal 1?) where they foreshadow the the conscience, just like they foreshadow the moon.

Also, this game has the most appropriately named achievements ever.

Yeah, I thought when it kicked in, that she was getting her workout with her voice, as intended (as she's an Opera singer to boot, right?)

as far as I can tell:
Caroline was Cave's secretary/assistant or whatever, and eventual partner. Towards the end of his life Cave directed the company at AI research etc so he could download his mind into a computer before his premature death and continue running the company. He died before then, and the company was given to Caroline, who was eventually the basis for GLADOS. The basis, or the personality, or whatever.

Additionally, Chell is not related to either of them. If the Opera Translations above are to be believed then Ratman is chells father, who took her to work for daughters at work day.

That theory is possible, depending on how long Rattman was surviving in the post-neurotoxin facility and how much Chell aged in the original suspended animation tube. I still think the age is a bit off, though.

There's a certain achievement that may shed light on this that I want to find.

Just a comment on the silent protagonist, it breaks immersion to have the character you're playing start talking or go into third person. It creates a little psychological connection that it's you in that situation rather than some dude/dudette.

I think somebody mentioned in a previous thread how Valve have a full time psychologist or something, evidently they are taking advantage of that person.

Look at other games where the story is kept all or mostly in first person where the protagonist is silent, it makes for a more engaging and immersive experience. I think it's still perfectly possible to tell a good story and have a good engaging story line etc like say Uncharted. But then you look at all the games where the character you're playing is chatty etc it rarely works.

My highest point of curiosity is the dev commentary in the Ratman's Light Bridge den. The commentary is merely 90 seconds of digital noise. It sounds like it's a transmission on Fax encoding, or early, early internet (IE, 300bps). I'd give a very shiny nickel to anyone who decodes that commentary.

Check the ARG wiki, and it was about the Portal 2 announcement ARG, not the Potato one. The way its hidden in the game with the sound, is just going hand in hand with the whole ARG thing.

It mostly par for the course for Valve's single player fps games. They have their own set of rules for immersing the player in these games: the character never speaks, because it would not be your voice. The camera never zooms away to some cut scene, because your character isn't all-seeing. You progress through the story in real time as the mute protagonist would experience it.

I wish more people would use these methods. Not all of them, I still want my mass effect 3, but honestly some studios could afford to take pages out of the Valve Story Book.

Am I the only one who hears a lyricality in GlaDOS' final speech to you? The rhythm seems like it beats to the BGM.

I think we all know this as it's par for the course when it comes to games.

The interesting thing here is that they're treating it as a gameplay element.

As part of the story, Chell's silence plays a role.

There are many other games utilizing these methods, and playing with the separation between the player and the actor. These are widely known things.
