If it turns out that free stuff off PSN is not why they have taking PSN down, they are probably still going to have to fix that right now anyway, since lots more people have heard about it now.

Wow, good call. I didn't think of that either. Sucks for them I guess.
i would be real sad if i had just bought MK or portal 2. as is... im just waiting to buy either of those i guess. and still pretty bummed about the whole thing.

Is this thread just to shit on Sony and speculate wildly? Because there is almost no confirmed information on this outage anywhere.
I made this thread to actually try and provide info on what was going on, but system warzz. System warzz never changes.
Hey let it be known that I still appreciate the creation and intent of this thread. I'm more following this from a techie standpoint. I'd love to see what exactly happened and the technical meat and potatoes behind what caused this massive shutdown of a worldwide service.
If anything it's a potent learning experience for all involved, and I don't mean that facetiously.

Sadly, you'll probably never know. If Sony fucked up, then they aren't going to publicly say it and just let Anonymous continue taking the blame. If they were hacked, again, they're not going to disclose details about what security holes are in their system. Either way, the whole thing will just be a giant black box of speculation.

Argh, that's probably true. Which will lead to more and more back and forth between the fanboys upon which the scene shall resemble monkeys throwing poo at each other if it hasn't already.
Is this really "anonymous" or someone's retaliation for Sony suing the two hackers who made piracy possible (geohot and graf, I think) after that first group re-enabled Linux (failoverflow)?
It's not Anonymous.
Anonymous is anonymous, which means a subset of the group could be doing it.
One of the heads even said so.
Yeah but that wouldn't make it an Anonymous action, it would be an action performed by a guy who also happens to be in Anonymous. It would be like saying "Steves are serious alcoholics" because Steve is passed out drunk again.
Except there's no such thing as "Anonymous heads", just random dudes willing to soap box. They are not an organization as such.
Taking Sony's word on it because they're the only 'reputable' source, yeah, I see the logic in that but it's also logically flawed. I hate to take this route of explanation (shitty analogy go), but when OJ Simpson denied killing Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman were we suppose to take his word at it because he was the only reputable source there to witness what happened? Sony has a high interest in covering up what happened if it was their own fault. Anyone who suggests that's a wrong notion to have is being ridiculous.
Actually, yes. That's how the Justice system works, remember? You give the person the benefit of the doubt unless you can prove otherwise. Innocent until proven guilty means just that, no? Then again, you took a pretty controversial case, I can't say if the guy was guilty or not, but wasn't he acquitted? I'd say that means that, as far as the law is concerned, he isn't guilty.
I kinda use the "innocent until proven guilty" approach in life. I'm going to assume Sony is being earnest here. I don't really have a reason to jump to conclusion based on rumors.
OJ was guilty as shit and that's that.

He got acquitted, didn't he? i'm not debating that, i'm just saying that as far as the law is concerned, he wasn't if he got acquitted... I think. I'm not even American, so i don't know all that much about the American Legal System.
Edit: According to Wikipedia, he got a verdict of "Not Guilty". As far as the law is concerned, O. J. Simpson was not guilty of that murder. That's how the law works, no? But enough about this silly derail.
Also, since when does "External Intrusion" mean "Anonymous and 4Chan are attacking"? I'm pretty sure "Anonymous" isn't the only group with people able to hack in it. I don't know, I just don't instantly think "anonymous" whenever someone mentions hacking.
True, but his point was, companies will generally tell you some "mistruths" in order to keep themselves out of public trouble.
The recent debacle with Tepco. BP, Enron, Exxon, the list goes on. Something goes wrong and the company bends the truth publicly in order to spin themselves into a better position. I mean, public relations are called 'spin doctors' for a reason.
Is there some reason Sony is different from any other company?

It's the Boogeman principle. Make it seem like some unknown-able entity is responsible for this entirely random event so the hands of those more likely to be responsible can be thrown into the sky.
In this instance the unknown-able entity is, continently enough, a body called Anonymous.

Yeah, that's true, but I don't think we have reason to believe any of these rumors. IMO, we don't know enough to be able to say "Sony fucked up and we lost all our games and credit card info to hackers". We don't know anything. When we don't have any info, I assume there's nothing wrong instead of assuming everything went catastrophically wrong. It's not like I can do anything about it anyway.
I mean, when you say BP and Exxon, you're talkign about major oil spills. The difference between a major oil spill and the PlayStation Network being down is that, while an oil spill is a catastrophic event in itself, a network outage so they can rebuilt badly coded parts of a system isn't nearly as catastrophic.
Really, whatever BP said, everyone knew oil was spilling out of the well and that it would harm a lot of people, because there was enough information to get to that conclusion.
I don't know much about what happened with Enron, but that is a lot closer to the current situation. It's kinda scary, but i'd rather not worry about potentially losing all my games when there's nothing telling me it might happen other than some rumors.
It's the Boogeman principle. Make it seem like some unknown-able entity is responsible for this entirely random event so the hands of those more likely to be responsible can be thrown into the sky.
In this instance the unknown-able entity is, continently enough, a body called Anonymous.
Again, people jumping to the conclusion that it's Anonymous doesn't mean Sony is trying to blame anonymous and the fact that Anonymous is a likely suspect doesn't mean the "outside intrusion" is an outright lie. Either way, it's kind of impossible to know whether or not the "outside intrusion" is a bluff or not. i'm giving Sony the benefit of the doubt because, again, i have no reason to assume otherwise. I know it's not anonymous, but I didn't really suspect Anonymous in the first place.

That's a fair call, I jumped to conclusions there.
So me and the wife bought PSPgo's about a week apart. We linked up with our room mate so I have games; and we bought Dissidia and Monster Hunter.
The poor wife has been unable to get games on her Go... She just sits there and watches me play Dissidia. We have been checking back every few hours.
These things happen, Dissidia is pretty dope though. I'm really liking this PSP Go, though I'm late to the party. After I bought it they announced the suspension of production.
I keep hearing that it might be back up by Tuesday in the United States... I wish Playstation would at least confirm/deny this rumor.
I don't think they're going to bother addressing every rumour that pops up, given that there are already many.
I mean, if they deny the rumour that it's coming up on Tuesday, what about the rumour that it'll be back on Wednesday, or Thursday, or Friday, or...?
Yeah I'd imagine they're going with a "silence is golden" approach at this point. All I've been able to find so far is an article on CS-Nation on how they're "Rebuilding the network under constant attack"

Again, it's annoying me because everyone seems to read that Sony is implying Anonymous is behind the attacks. (In reference to that link to CS-Nation)
Didn't Anonymous attack Sony, like, 3 weeks ago? Didn't Anonymous then say they're stopping via "official message", because it just harmed people who have nothing to do with it?
Really, I'm fairly confident that by "external attacks" they don't mean Distributed Denial of Service attacks, but stuff like actual hacking and junk, as shown by that youtube vid showing how to get free games. They obviously tried isolating the problem components and then, realized they needed to fix a core component of the network, I guess.
Lots of people threw around the word "incompetence"... Maybe their security measures weren't up to snuff, sure, but isn't it a good thing to fix it thoroughly? Is that incompetence too?
Once again, for those that missed it; there is no 'anonymous' collective to confirm or deny they did anything. By very definition the group both does and does not exist. It's a franchise operation.
When I steal a muffin from my nearest Starbucks, by simply claiming it was the work of Anonymous I become part of Anonymous myself and Anonymous therefore is responsible.
There is no hivemind to 'deny they had anything to do with it'. There is no 'official message'.

So this showed up on Twitter.
PSN brought in about 870 million dollars of revenue in 2010. That means Sony have lost about 12 million dollars of revenue so far.

Not sure I get your point? Your point is that it's Anonymous that's behind it because they can't deny it and it's what you think? There's really no evidence Anonymous has anything to do with any of this. Unless you mean as soon as you do something anonymously, it's the same as claiming to be from Anonymous?
Seriously, this isn't Anonymous, this is people trying to break Sony's security measures. So they can get free games.

No matter what subgroup under the banner of Anonymous could have done this, if it was them, they would've said so. They may not be an actual organized body, but they have a set of ideals and procedures they follow.
Right, they just randomly target people / organizations~
Ooooorrr maybe they have a goal in mind in who / what they target. But what the hell do I know, I only have eyes and ears to observe the world around me.
So I originally took this as an opportunity to hold my nose up at my roommate and continue playing MK9 on xbox LIVE while he pouted in the corner, but now it's just getting frustrating even for me and I don't have a PS3. If they've got to change or fix something, then I understand that. If they're being messed over by some super powered mega crew of awesome hacker squads, then I also understand that.
..Just a widdle more updating would be nice. The dark is not a fun place to beee.
