Similar multiplayer arcade games to Dungeons and Dragons?

Besides the two D&D arcade games (and the newer Gauntlets) are there other arcade beat-em-ups that involve leveling up and lots of special magic moves?

I know of many that are just straight up brawlers in the style of Golden Axe but which others, if even any, combine it with an involved character system?

Tower of Doom and Shadows Over Mystara are the crown jewels of that type of arcade game, there really isn't anything I can think of with as in-depth a combat or item system.

Although a couple of older Capcom arcade titles laid the ground work for the D&D side-scrollers, those being Knights of the Round and King of Dragons. Neither one's combat is as complex (although both utilize a very nice reactive block by hitting back on the joystick right when you get hit) nor are there as many items (and in the case of Knights of the Round, no character equipment), but there is leveling up and a good bit of strategy involved.

Two words: Castle Crashers. All that and then some. Apart from that I can't think of any off the top of my head.

You're probably going to laugh, but Dynasty Warriors.

Those games are essentially 3D beat 'em ups, filled with RPG elements and customization and loot and crazy shit going on at all times. The newest one is quite good.

Odin Sphere is rather involved with it's RPG trappings. Items, levels, sheep trees that you harvest and eat the meat to make your HP gain experience.

Guardian Heroes for Saturn and GBA.

Ragnarok Battle OFFline I think was very RPG/beat em up style.

Scott Pilgrim has levelling and currency.

Dungeon Hunters: Alliance is similar to it. You start as either a rogue, mage, or warrior. You can level up to 75, lots of random loot, lots of skills, and lots of killing.

    Brutal Legend!

You get an entire army like a medieval RTS but you get to fight along side them as an awesome hero unit with melee attacks or magic spells! Every car you build, you can hop in and run bitches over or manually fire it's turrets. The same goes for things that are not cars. You have "Double Team" attacks with ever car or infantry.

No see, I mean arcade games, as in ones that existed in an arcade. I know there are lots of console stuff but how about ones that required quarters to play?

BlackDragon480 got the right idea in his post..

I've heard VERY good things about this game, both around here and other places (word of mouth)... but you know, PSN and all that...

    Is it on XBLA yet?

Don't think that it is. Is it even coming to it? I thought for sure it's PSN only.

You won't get anything quite like the two D&D games (Shadow over Mystara being my favourite arcade game of all time).

But if you look at a few of the games Capcom put out before and after it, you can get some similar experiences.

Specifically, I'm talking Battle Circuit, the last arcade beat-em-up Capcom ever did, and Armored Warriors, a game they put out a couple of years earlier.

Of the two, [vidURL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaUpXR0KfPw"]Armored Warriors[/vidURL] has less progression, but you can change the way the characters play. In the game you play as the pilot of a giant robot, and all the robots are made out of multiple parts that can be swapped for parts taken from enemies. So you may start the game with a certain arm part or leg type, but you can take a different one later on, and from what I remember they lasted at least until you got a game over. Pretty sure it's also the first time we saw the Blodia, and when it later got spun-off into a fairly-alright 3d fighting game we eventually got one of the characters (and part of their mech) in Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2.

[vidURL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGDTYs04ozA"]Battle Circuit[/vidURL] didn't have the items, and it had arguably a less robust combat system (and no branching paths or anything like that), but it did have 6 totally unique characters who all had their own special moves and a special power-up state they could use to abuse bosses and stuff, and it also had a between mission shop that let you buy extra moves for the characters and even extra lives. It's not as good as Shadow over Mystara, but it's a fun game.

If you're looking for games that are simply good beat-em-ups that from the same era (or a little after), I'd go with [vidURL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu4F1oL4BAk"]Sengoku 3[/vidURL], which is a really good beat-em-up with an interesting combo system (has fully incorporated juggles and stuff, lot's of fun), and while it doesn't have character progression like the D&D games, you do unlock extra characters during the game and can switch characters part way through, which is neat.

For games that are like it, but that I've either never played or only played once and can't give a solid impression on: [vidURL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewv2jMsQOQM"]Oriental Legend 2[/vidURL] (there's no English version of this game) and the [vidURL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc5cAt44hQ8"]Knights of Valour[/vidURL] games (can't remember which in the series I played; they're all in Chinese, and the arcade cabinet was impossible to read, but it was an alright game).

I would do many dark, dark things for a Shadow over Mystara HD release, remake or not. Or even a Shadow over Mystara release on a console I can own.

Man Cantido, I know you love those Brutal Legends, but you seem to try and tenuously stretch it to fit any and every game recommendation thread going! I eagerly await your post when someone makes an 'I enjoyed Animal Crossing, what similar games are out there?' thread :P

Alliance is very ... generic. I'd recommend Torchlight over it, particularly if you're looking for something on XBLA.

True, but I already have Torchlight on Steam.

    Torchlight doesn't have co-op though.

Well that's the thing, unfortunately - coin-op games like that are a very rare breed indeed, with only a few notable examples like the ones you and BD gave. And since the modern arcade is pretty much extinct, the most exposure a lot of folks have had to games like those are "the next best thing", or the stuff on Steam/XBLA/PSN and the like.

So yeah, you'll see one or two of those pop up once in a blue moon on a digital download service or something similar, but I honestly think you'll be hard pressed to find what you're looking for these days, physically or otherwise.
