Can someone suggest me a FO1 build for a first time through? I've started multiple times and always get frustrated and quit when my dude misses 10 times in a row and dies to an ant.
Int 10.
Tag guns and talking.
Gifted for more stat points. Also good, lots of AG.
Charisma is basically useless.
Don't set your strength above 6. Power armor will get you to 10 if you set it to 6, 9 if left at 5.

[strike]No, no, no. Don't put Int at 10. While that would do a great deal of help in previous Fallout games. You get a 14 skill points per level up (Int is 7-9) vs. 15 skill points per level up (Int = 10). While that may stack up over time, those extra skill points are unnecessary by end-game anyway, as you'll no doubt have filled out your desired build, and used anything else towards passive skills, like Lockpicking and Science.[/strike]
Oh shit, we're talking about Fallout 1?
Yeah, go with that build... well, so long as INT and AG are at 10, you can go with whatever. Also, take the Skilled trait. It's the best trait in the game, and the skill point penalty is benign.

I still haven't beaten this game, I'm very close, but I vaguely remember reading something on Kotaku about not downloading the update for something. Is that all fixed? I'd like to try and finish it but if I still can't update I don't want to put the disc in. I also could be completely misremembering a thing, but.

Depends, Charisma affects how many people you can have with you.
If you want Dogmeat and Tycho, you'll want at least 4 Charisma.
or Dogmeat and Ian.
But no one wants Ian, Unless their back needs a few ventilation holes at least.

Ugh, Ian. I should get a medal for keeping that fool alive throughout an entire play through. Also I believe you can boost you charisma with chems to pick up extra characters. There is also some lady, K-something, you can pick up but she is rather weak by the time you get her.

Nah.
Charisma doesn't do that in 1.
Or much of anything.
Uh, yes..it does.
Charisma determines how many followers you can have in 1.

That was a new addition for 2. Checked a bunch of guides, all had the same thing to say.
Also, I never ran a character who couldn't recruit everyone, and I dumped Ch multiple times.

I killed a giant radscorpion in the cemetary (with the help of Victor), dropped the mantis leg next to the body, picked it up and put it on the body of the scorpion, then trading it back and forth. But I don't get an xp.

Ian wasn't so bad up until you get Cassidy.
But hey, I dumped everybody after Mariposa. Ian died trying to get in, Dogmeat died at the first barrier (*sniff*), and Cassidy was getting too damaged too, so I just cut him loose. I had the Turbo Plasma Rifle and the Hardened Power Armor. I was ready for anything by the end of the game.

Tycho was cool. Gas mask, trenchcoat, shotgun, ranger training. Only party member who didn't feel like deadweight.
Really, really enjoying the game since I picked it up at the $20 Best Buy sale. I think NV might almost be easier for new players to get into, since the story's not as heavy and it gets you into the game fast.
Q for NV veterans: I've got it on hardcore, and very hard difficulty, and it seems pretty easy. I'm in Nipton now, and Ed-E seems to be really tearing through shit. I'm focusing on lockpick/science/repair/speech, too. Is the difficulty gonna increase?
Really you are finding 'Very Hard' easy enough? I found Normal difficulty enough challenge. I have finished the game four times as different characters so I think I count as a veteran. Also Hardcore Mode isn't really related to difficulty directly it's just 'more things to worry about' mode. Do you have a high Charisma stat, because hight Charisma can make your allies more competent I think which may explain ED-E tearing things up
Definitely. Unless you go off the beaten path or piss off the Legion, there's nothing particularly dangerous on the initial road to Vegas. Cazadors will teach you humility.

I think the stimpacks healing over time is a pretty big difficulty boost. It's much, much harder to brute force your way through encounters.

Right, right. They use the same models and they both start with Shotguns, so I mix them up frequently :P.

I've found that I've had to change my play style compared to FO3. No more scouring the hills for treasure until I get some levels/weapons.
Hey that hill probably has a camp! Oh wait, it's a super mutant camp and I'm level 6. Hey there's a cave over there! Oh but 3 deathclaws are guarding it. Hey there's an unguarded cave! Oh but it's filled with nightstalkers who like to gang bang me. :P
I remember when I was first like, "Hey, I'm level 12, and have some decent guns... let's take on some Deathclaws!" and that's when I found out the game follows Fallout 1/2 logic, and not Fallout 3 level scaling logic.
Cool, I'll just give it a little wait. I did have to stop brute forcing through things. Like, I let the fox-head guy and his minions go instead of trying to take them all on. (After trying once and dying.) I guess I got the "easy" impression mostly from (1) ripping through the whole prison camp, and (2) being able to hide while the robot torches everyone on the other unavoidable critter/ganger encounters. But it sounds like things will tighten up.
Hardcore mode is fun. I think it does contribute to difficulty through, like someone said, not being able to hit a stimpack hotkey during combat to simulate invincibility, and also through the difficulty of fixing crippled limbs. I'm gimping around with one arm right now, in fact.

So true. Survival is def worth getting up to 80 or so (you can use a magazine + perk to get the last extra 20 if need be). Chow+stims are the only reason I survived any cazadores.
So im playing some new vegas mods to get ready for the new dlc (willow companion is cute, the voicework and questline make her easily the best companion mod ive found, if anyone is into that sort of thing)
I finally got around to new vegas bounties, and completeting the bison casino rebuild...
after much shooting mans i went to go look if i can start predownloading the dlc and dont even see it on steam.... /lesigh.

I rarely had issues with them (but when I did it generally resulted in a reload). Make sure that when you mess with em you're standing somewhere they can't reach or you snipe like a god. Mid-way through the game I could them down before they closed with vats, a tooled up sniper rifle, the +20% accuracy perk and wing shots.
Now caves and packs of Deathclaws: that shit got me killed more than anything else since I couldn't fight at maximum range.
So, I think I may have encountered a problem in my game. Probably a mid-game spoiler, if people are still concerned about such things
I'm just making my way from the entrance to Vault 34 to Fort McCarran, and I found Victor dead on top of a golden gecko. I'd recently bumped into him for the second or third time and he'd wandered off, then I found him spinning in some water a little while after that, but now he's dead. Damnit, I was hoping to find him on the Strip somewhere.

Cheers man, that's all I needed. I was just afraid it'd killed a quest that I was really interested in.
Have to say, I'm enjoying New Vegas more than Fallout 3, and I loved Fallout 3. I'm finding the stories and the writing used to tell them to be far more captivating.
