Court is fun!

So i've been in and out of court for suing the seller of my house. after lots of horseshit, we settled for about half what i was suing for, he paid me about 1/3 of it, and then cut off contact. Essentially, the judgement is in my favor, i won, he owes me the agreed upon sum (i think my lawyer should have put in a clause that if he bails on the payments he'd owe the full amount i originally sued him for... but hindsight, etc. besides he probably would not have agreed to that). Last week there was an oral exam scheduled, where i am led to believe my lawyer has to try and find out what assets he has so we can go after them and get me paid. My lawyer said, oftentimes this is just a formality because the defendant is often: "fuck you i'm broke"

Anyways, dude didn't show up at all. so now 2 months from now there is a show/cause hearing scheduled. I googled about but i'm still not entirely sure what this entails. I'm assuming it's "show up and prove that you bailed on the oral exam for a legit reason" but if he has a "legit reason" does that mean i have to a)get another oral exam scheduled and pay my lawyer again, or b)oral exam crap gets taken care of right there. I know if he doesn't respond to the show cause thing, a warrant gets issued for his arrest, but considering this guy's past behavior (he didn't even show up to the actual court case, but somehow got it dismissed) i will not put it past him to come up with some asinine excuse that will extend this whole travesty even longer.

I'm amazed at how much a douchebag defendant can make life hellish in a court of law. all he has to do is ignore you, and you will end up spending a goddamn fortune in legal fees. I can't imagine suing a large company with a legal team, they could just keep you tied up in red tape until you go bankrupt/give up.
