Man, that is really damn annoying. Is there really no way to tell without actually trying to play a game? I can't believe that's true.
Being presented with the chance that I'll have to drop 100 bucks on a machine that I might have to get replaced (albeit for free) a second time immediately afterward is awful.

MS' language is a little vague. Are they able to tell if a user will potentially (/definitely, I guess) be affected by this via a hardware profile communicated over XBL and are they reaching out that way, or are they getting notifications of X error message as they're popping up and are they reaching out that way?
So I guess I'm shit out of luck if my third xbox just won't read any disks at all it started yesterday, no error just reading... Open Tray!
I'm probably screwed without a error message

I wonder what the over/under is on this being a targeted bricking of a subset of consoles that had a high possibility of RROD-ing anyway, deployed intentionally by MS under a fabricated "rogue update" storyline in an attempt to position themselves as a company that knows how to handle widespread network-related troubles by using a few new consoles as a PR loss leader.

Got this e-mail and have never had any problems.
Needless to say my 360S is on its way.

That sure is a sentence.
And it would be good business practice to magnify that you are on top of issues when companies around you aren't.
Oh wow, i havent played mine in a while, and i popped in FF 13 and it wont run the disk, it just says "Read error" then ejects the disc instantly. I tried to contact MS and then that e-mail showed up. Score.

So... this update is up now? I ask because the op was talking about it hitting tomorrow, but there have been a couple of people mentioning the effects hitting already. I'll hook that shit up right when I get home if I can find out than, but I have to do the living room bed room shuffle, and don't want to bother doing it the day before I need to.

Well apparently Eurogamer jumped the gun a bit, and didn't check their facts first.
MS says it was a previous smaller update that affects a small amount of 360s, so you can check right now. Initially it was going to be affecting a lot more with an update scheduled to hit tomorrow, but they've stated that there are no problems with tomorrow's update.
The update didnt do it, its something MS did on their end that is doing it. I dont know what. Apparently i can play other games fine, but FF 13 doesn't work. Nier works though, and so does Brothers in Arms and all my arcade games.
I still have my January-after-launch console sitting in my closet back home (I traded it in for my 360 S with that sweet Gamestop deal, but some friends thought it'd be hilarious to buy it back and give it to me as a birthday gift).
If I was literally on the other side ofthe planet, I'd test it out.
I had one of the original 360 models for many years. This winter, I traded it in for a newer model just so I could have an HDMI port (this was specifically for Pinball FX 2 I kid you not.)
Is there an official number or link to bitch out Microsoft and claim my prize yet?
It'll probably be to do with the new AP 2.5 disc checks that are being done, I've got an old Hitachi I may try (though it red rings after about 5 mins of use!).
Hmm...I've got a launch 360 but haven't received an email. Of course, my console hasn't been online since last week so that may be the reason. Bummer if it happens, since I just ordered some new games.
Still, if it does happen, a few questions:
1. I understand the slim model has an internal HDD? If true, does the regular data transfer kit still work? I got a transfer kit a while back when I upgraded from a 20gb to a 120gb and would want to try and use it again to move from 120gb to 250gb.
2. When I moved from 20gb-to-120gb, I found that the transfer kit was unable to move any DLC from original Xbox games (it all got corrupted), and so I had to download it again on the 120gb. However, original Xbox live is down now, and the transfer kit wipes out the old drive when you copy stuff over, so I guess I'm shit out of luck with the oXbox DLC? Or is there a chance that stuff can be copied to a USB drive and transferred over to still work?

For what it's worth, the guy who got the original email has a Lite-On drive.

Generous replacement, but kind of a dick move putting a time limit on making the request for one. If I found a manufacturer had remotely killed a device of mine, but because I hadn't used it for a few months I'd missed the replacement window, I'd be on to consumer rights for advice pretty damn sharpish.

Is this update not available in the UK yet or something? I haven't been given any prompts or messages regarding an update yet.

Anyway, dudes being able to upgrade their 360 over this is pretty nice I guess.

Thank you Eurogamer for your excellent reporting. I'll be sure to never believe a damn thing you guys say from now on.

Mine is a launch day console. If this thing works, all of them should work.
I'm jealous.
