I really like Bastion. The automated equipping of new weapons and skills is a bit annoying, and I hate the Proving for the last weapon, but otherwise I enjoy almost everything about this game.
Oh, and the Narrator is great. F the haters.
It is the only Proving I didn't bother to at least get through the Third Place prize. So very frustrating.
The calamity cannon?
Yeah, once you get the fifth upgrade that proving ground is actually the easiest.
It seems kind of random. Some of them are stupid easy when upgraded fully and some seem hard still. I've got the bow, repeater, hammer, pistols, and cannon fully upgraded. The bow and repeater were incredibly easy where as the hammer and pistols are still hard (well without using the werewhisky thing. I'll have to try that). I haven't gotten far enough in my new game plus to do the cannon yet.
Just wrapped up new game plus along with all three 10 idol challenges. Man, they were challenging but fair for the most part, but FUCK that last one. So much shit on the screen that it's almost impossible to orient yourself at times. I had fun experimenting with weapons and laying out plans in the first two, but that last one was just dumb and tedious. The reflect and phasing idols are the goddamn worst. Kind of broke the fighting system for me.
But it was a good game overall. Although in hindsight it feels rather insubstantial and short with very little variety -- I guess it's a testament to the art and sound design that I'm almost forgetting that it's an indie XBLA game. Kind of wish it was more.
All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
I just died on the 3rd Who Knows Where, with 10 idols, on the last enemy.
Not the last reflection, the last enemy
This kind of frustration is why I won't be bothering with 10 idol Who Knows Where runs. The challenge is nice, sure, but I just don't give a crap about leaderboards. It's too much of a controller-tosser for me.
Finally got the time to pick this up tonight. Up to three bastion upgrades and loving it so far. Managed to get 1st place in each proving ground currently (Bow, Repeater, Machete) which is nice.
Also, the IGN review hints that a New Game Plus playthrough is self-aware, and I wonder if that fact has to do with (more ending spoilers from the first playthrough)
the Restoration being followed by history repeating itself and the Calamity happening again, necessitating the Kid go through all the same motions
Even if you do the evacuation ending, the NG+ narration is self-aware, at least a little bit. I thought that was kind of an interesting decision, and I wasn't really sure if choosing Evacuation would have an effect on the NG+, but I'm guessing that it doesn't.
Fully prepared to admit how wrong I was. Gave the trial another shot, ended up buying the game and am loving it to death. Beat the game this morning and am almost done with new game+.
Question: wheres a good spot to complete the fire bellows vigil? As for the mortar, i assume its vigil is easy once you fully upgrade it, yes?
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

In the pipe "Who Knows Where" is a reflection with two of the squirt generators. Just get them to spawn a bunch of squirts and shoot the shit out of them with the bellows.

Have you done the bellow's challange area yet? It gives you a whole bunch of peckers to roast. I got my vigil there without even knowing what the requirements were.
I was under the impression that NG+ all the vigils were reset. But most of my vigils have already been completed with the exception of about 3.

I think I only got 3 upgrades (the reduced charge up and cool down) and that challenge became incredibly easy to get first place. It just meant that sometimes I had to be in the blast radius.
So I bought this game. I kinda want my $15 back. I'll probably see it through since I already got three cores, but man
Things I dislike:
- Can't stand the narrator's voice
- The combat is really repetitive and annoying, feels way too button-mashy and everything is far too frantic to put any actual thought into
- The RPG elements are so light they're laughable
- Probably the single worst targeting system I've ever personally encountered
Things I like:
- The art style. Love the watercolor style, we need more games like this, Braid, SaGa Frontier 2, Legend of Mana, etc.
- The idea of the narration. It works well at first. With "he gets up" and "he just starts breaking shit", I was like "oh neat!" and thought it was a fun, engaging gimmick. It got old very fast. It really needs to be expanded upon in more meaningful ways though, at least as far as I am in the game.
- Simple as they are, the controls are nice and fluid. Love the degree of control you have, especially when rolling

You don't understand the combat system at all. "Button-mashy" is not an adequate descriptor by any stretch of the imagination. With more and more idols turned on the screen can get a bit frantic, but definitely not at the point you're at in the game, so I have no idea what you're complaining about there. Same with the targeting system - it works great outside of a few small circumstances that you haven't encountered with only three cores. I think the problems you're describing with the combat can all easily be attributed to user error.
If you think that choosing between that many different weapon combinations, weapon upgrades (and their resulting combinations), Idols, special moves, and permanent buffs (in the form of Spirits) is so light as to be laughable, then I don't really know what to say. It feels like more slating Bastion for what it isn't (a full blown RPG) as opposed to what it is. I think it's got more options than anyone has the right to expect from a $15 downloadable Arcade title, and it uses those options to great effect in a unique way.

I have gotten through every single area by mashing whatever melee weapon I had at the time
That is the definition of "button-mashy"
And as for targeting, it never targets the person I want it to, and even scrolling using the bumpers it takes forever. Maybe I've been spoiled by twin-stick shooters and third-person action games that use the analog stick to a much better effect in terms of aiming projectiles (Shadow Complex, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light) rather than sticking to a cumbersome "press these buttons to scroll between targets" model
EDIT: Since coming upon the scrap musket, this is less of an issue, but man, fuck the repeater. The scrap musket is fantastic because you don't have to be locked on, you just blow everything away.
The life leech potion seems to be a negative, because I lose too much healing from potions, and I can't get to the last boss without at least one death.

You and I have different definitions of button-mashing, since I've always used (and heard) it as the ability to get by by simply slamming on any button you have without having a clue what you're doing. And if you're playing the game on the easiest setting and complaining about how easy it is to get through, try changing it. Difficulty adjusting in Bastion is one of its greatest strengths.
Targeting in Bastion is very simple. It always targets the closest enemy automatically. You can pre-aim if you want to target someone far away. Targeting also changes based on what weapon you have equipped. You can't really complain about the targeting system if you're not trying different weapons to find the one that suits the style you want to use.

Well, after I wiped the tears from my eyes I swapped my loadout a bit and beat it with 2 potions and my extra life left, so it isn't THAT bad. I basically beat all three by spamming the Mortar with the occasional Pike jab.
And then I finished the game again, and now I'm 6th on the leaderboards for Story!

Weapons/spirits suggestions?
I favoured the scrap musket and the mortar, both fully upgraded (you need to get second place in the calamity cannon challenge for the last mortar material), with the bomb barrage skill (getting said skill from the mortar challenge is pretty easy).
Musket handles things up close, mortar takes on distant enemies, or I would fire the mortar in front of dashing enemies so that they would run into the blast. The mortar can also hit those enemies that dig underground. The thing about the soldiers is that their dash is very dangerous, so I would lower my shield and bring it back up quickly to counter them.
As for spirits, I had +10 health, +2 health tonics/tonics heal 100% (much better than the health from attacks in my opinion), +2 black tonics, the damage resistance one, and the +1 chance to get up.

Yeah, once you get the mortar upgrade that prevents you from hurting yourself, it easily becomes the best weapon.
As for the life leech potion, I would only recommend it if you're using the idol that prevents potion drops.

If you're using the life leech, grab the bow or machete and upgrade it with poison. You can tag somebody and then start rolling or blocking while you heal and they get hurt.
So, just picked this up and am having quite a good bit of fun with it. I'm trying to clear as much as I can, leave no stone unturned, etc, but have hit a bit of a wall with the machete proving ground. I managed the repeater and the bow one just fine but the machete one I'm getting no where near close. Any pointers?

There's a trick to it
Stand in the middle and kill all the ones spawning in the middle before they can get away.
So...I'm wondering. Is this more action or RPG? I'm wondering when it comes to combat. Does your character have skills?
One weapon on one button, one weapon on another, one super skill on a third. Much more action than RPG.
Each weapon also ends up with 10 upgrades that you can only choose 5 of.
And each level you get one "spirit" slot that you can pick one of 20ish bonuses to put in.

Once I got them, I never really switched away from the machete and rifle. It gives a great mix of sniping and absolute murder at close range (especially with all the crit bonuses on the machete, as well as the speed increase). Don't bother with the life leech potion, either. There's one that heals you after each counter-attack, and a lot of the things you're fighting there have very telegraphed moves, so that's some instant healing. The bonus healing potions and black potions are nice too.
It frustrates me that this game has 4.0 star rating...what the heck are kids smoking or drinking these days, it must be killing too many of their brain cells. I really don't want to get on a high and mighty stance but maybe this is a game you either get it or you don't...technically I don't get the appeal of twitch shooters ever since Quake

I can't believe how wrong i was about this game
ending sucked the second time around because
Also, the pike is civilization!
Did you go double-throw or armor piercing? I wish I could wield two pikes, each with a different set of upgrades.
