It frustrates me that this game has 4.0 star rating...what the heck are kids smoking or drinking these days, it must be killing too many of their brain cells. I really don't want to get on a high and mighty stance but maybe this is a game you either get it or you don't...technically I don't get the appeal of twitch shooters ever since Quake
Well, I'm stone cold sober and am a crusty thirtysomething and love this game. Seems bizarre to call it a "twitch shooter," too. I mean, it doesn't hide the fact that it's an action game, so I'm not sure what people were expecting. If you don't like games with action combat or you want a more traditionally-told story, then yes, this isn't for you. But a lot of us have really enjoyed it, and I think the non-traditional way of telling the story is pretty neat.

Isn't four stars high on XBL?

Yeah, well it does actually matter at least a little bit over the long haul because they pretty much have to get 4.5 to get high on the Top Rated list which some people might use to find games to d/l...the indie game devs fret about that a lot because it can affect their sales probably way more than XBLA game sales would be affected. More just I'm honestly surprised it's not getting nearly 100% 5 stars.

The game hasn't even been out a week, and it is entirely typical of the internet to give stuff low ratings for shits and giggles. Being the lead game of the Summer of Arcade and being a really good game to boot will definitely give it the attention it deserves until it is in the top rated section, it really isn't something to get pissed about.
Really can't express how amazed I was by the depth of the story. The concept itself was strong, but the details fleshed out an entire world and made you feel a personal connection to the main players.

Oh my god this.
Bastion is so incredibly good, I can't even believe it. I feel stupid for saying anything negative about it at first...
Even The Narrator's voice, while still grating, doesn't bother me as much. I just pretend he's Ron Perlman.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
So i beat it yesterday, then instead of instantly new gaming, continued and beat it with a different choice.
Are there two endings or four?
I beat it by saving zaf both times but did both final choices. Do the final choices or ending change when you leave him to die? I'll find out after newgame + but i dont mind being spoiled so i can take my time.
I didn't save Zulf the second time, and chose to reset the world, I don't recall hearing anything in regards to Zulf not living. I did like seeing the picture of him during the credits re-united with his wife.
Speaking of what I call the "dumb" solution
Is it definite that resetting the world erases the memories of The Kid, Rucks etc.? Because then its just a big cyclical deal of idiocy. Also, did The Calamity destroy the whole world, or just Caelondia and the Ura nation?
edit: I say its dumb because history will just keep repeating itself if no one remembers what happened.

Such a great, FUN game! I've really loved it. Also love that the kids can play it with no qualms from me. Great story without being NSF the 11yr old. And GREAT music! I think the Singer's level was probably my favorite of the whole game.

Well thats why
it has an alternate function...I imagine that it was expected that the reset was performed with the intention of preventing the calamity but if the reset wipes memory of the people in the bastion then they would never remember it. But its a chance they decided to take when they built it, and also gave it the evacuation function so if they suspected that was what was happening, they could choose to continue time and start over.
I really like Bastion. The automated equipping of new weapons and skills is a bit annoying, and I hate the Proving for the last weapon, but otherwise I enjoy almost everything about this game.
That seems to be an intentional decision by the designers. They give you a new weapon, make you use it, and present challenges for which the new weapon is best suited. Then a little later, there's an Arsenal so you can switch if it annoys you. I thought forcing you to use the weapons was pretty cool - sort of breaks you out of your comfort zone a bit.
it's more annoying when you run through the levels once again and they keep taking away your preffered weapons. it's true you can find an arsenal usually but still would rather have it only force equip on the first playthrough.

My biggest problem was being unable to assign which button to the new weapon. I didn't see a way to swap them in game, so I'd end up with two ranged weapons, since I swapped the original melee/ranged layout.

You don't have to pick up the weapons if you already have them.

Did you go double-throw or armor piercing? I wish I could wield two pikes, each with a different set of upgrades.
There's an option other than armor piercing?
I'm enjoying this game immensely, I actually bought MS points for the first time in forever just to pick it up. High quality stuff.
Double-throw is crazy good. You get both a long reach melee weapon and a high damage ranged attack in a single slot.
Yeah, but can you two-shot one of the stone frogs right in its face? That was the single best part of that upgrade. Besides, I have a second weapon slot for ranged, why would I need to toss my pike at all?
No, I just two-shot them in the back And of course, if you use the pike and a ranged weapon, how do you use the Fire Bellows or Scrap Musket? (Yes, I consider the Musket effectively a melee weapon)
Of course, despite my arguing that double throw is awesome for New Game, I did swap to armor piercing for my New Game+
Just finished this a few hours ago, and man, this game came from completely out of nowhere to blindside me with how amazing it is. Bastion is the whole goddamned package: tight controls, great customization and variety, ambiance and aesthetic, those beautiful watercolor visuals, the haunting soundtrack, a narrative that doesn't hit you over the head with bullshit cutscenes and tropes, optional toggles for difficulty and rewards, and multiple avenues for replays ... I'm honestly kind of stunned at how much I liked it.
I wasn't expecting to be so taken with the writing and characters, but it's all so simple and executed so well (and not hamfistedly shoved in your face) that I couldn't help but just get swept up by it. A little restraint goes such a long way.
I ended up saving Zulf, and choosing to activate the Bastion to reset. The whole segment with carrying Zulf was somewhat cliche, but still immensely well done -- I loved how they attacked, and then slowly stopped, and one lone archer actually picks up attacking again but another of the Ura strikes and kills the archer from behind instantly. And the whole ending with Zia was fantastic, and again, another great feature that didn't get run into the ground: someone other than Rucks talks for the very first time after he's spent the entire game talking, but it's just for a few moments, and nothing more.
Started a New Game Plus to go pick some other options and try all new weapons. I've already noticed one or two new tweaks in the narration. Also: Possibly my favorite credit-roll song ever in a game, right up there with Max Payne 2 and Mass Effect 1. Is the soundtrack available to buy? The ending song, Home Sweet Home, and the Singer are amazing.
If there's ever a game that justifies this feature, this is certainly one of them. Also, lots of cool things you don't catch playing through the second time.
So, about that pc release. Hope they learn from games like Fable 3 and don't wait too long.
That tends to not work out so well for them.

This game sort of creeps me out to a degree. It makes me wonder If i've lived my life before and I've just forgotten for some reason. As if I'm making the same stupid mistakes over and over.
I carried Zulf, and then I picked to evacuate with Rucks and Zia because, well, I fucking hate bullshit endings where nothing changes (like say Prince of Persia '08). I liked it, a nice little send-off that leaves a sequel possibility open. Started my New Game+
Overall pretty enjoyable game once I worked through some of its quirks. I still don't know if it's worthy of the masturbation some people are performing for it but whatever

I kind of hope they don't do a sequel since it will all seem hamfisted
But, I also hope if they do decide to- that they can make it feel unique like the original.

Does anything carry over to NG+? Challenges completed or upgrades or anything?
- Some, but not all completed vigils.
- All weapons unlocked from the start.
- Purchased items from Lost & Found carry over.
- Upgrades carry over.
- Levels carry over.
- Buildings can be constructed in any order.
Progress at the proving grounds is reset, though you keep the rewards if you got them the first time around.

And worrying about star ratings is like worrying about likes/dislikes on a youtube video ie: pointless.

Just wait until you get the last upgrade. Without it the challenge is ridiculous, but fully upgraded the enemies don't even get on the screen.

Ahh well. The voice over work doesn't rub me the wrong way. The challenges do however. Seriously screw some of these 1st place weapon victories.
other then that, Outright fantastic.
This game deserves a 4.5 or a 5 out of 5.
Once you get all the upgrades the only weapon challenge that's still hard is the shield one.
Most of the skills you get from completing them aren't that great, so I'd suggest just waiting until later.
I'm not sure to just replay the last level and
to see what happens.
That tends to not work out so well for them.
