I doubt we'll be getting a 3DS remodel anytime soon. The 3DS doesn't have nearly as much design flaws as the original GBA and DS had.
Right, there are definitely some flaws but you don't release a new model just to fix lines on the screen when you close it. That's like a hinge crack fix.
And on the other side of that, not only is it lacking in small flaws, but they can't do anything really significant either like adding another joystick because that would kill their userbase. A DSi style upgrade would have to be a long ways away.
Basically all you could hope for in the short term (within one year from now) would be new colors and maybe an XL version, if that doesn't eff with the 3D effect.
So dudes, I'm sitting on a $30 gift card from K-mart... I was considering getting the Nyko Power Pak with it. Did the newest system update fix that multiple Streetpass bug from switching batteries that I heard about?
Also e-Shop... neat and much MUCH better than the previous Nintendo online shops. But what's the deal with the zipcode thing? Do taxes get calculated even when you've used a money card that you bought at the store(which you would already have paid some tax on)? Is there anything stopping one from entering a zipcode hailing from a state without taxes? I mean, I don't remember doing that for any other download service, so I'm a little confused.
Sorry to bump my post, but it got kind of lost in all the other talk. I could use a little help with these questions! Especially the zipcode thing.
Oh and if anyone is debating on Donkey Kong for GB Virtual Console, don't. I picked up the game cart a little while ago based on some high praise, and now I wish I could say that it was one of the formative games of my childhood. It's hot stuff, and for $4 a great buy. Get it!
I can't say I really care for the multiple price system with GB games though. Saves you from buying games with little content for max price but still... I hope $6 really is the limit.

Considerably better battery life? Though I am basing this entirely on pre-release speculation rather than any actual hands-on. No idea how long batteries last on medium settings.
Also if you're loving Donkey Kong, do yourself a favour and look out its sequel, Mario Vs DK for the GBA.
A perfectly distilled shining gem of bitesize platforming brilliance.
March of the Minis is a fun enough thing, but I harshly resent it seeming to steal away any opportunity of a proper continuation of the Mario Vs DK line.
Yeah, I've played March of the Minis after the fact and feel the same way. It's cool and all, but I much prefer the platforming excellence of the previous efforts.
Oh geez and the screen lines/circle pad imprint thing! Any advice on preventing that around here? It's driving me crazy. In fact the glossiness of the entire top half is. My DS lite was a finger print magnet on the outside, but at least I didn't have to look at it.

I used 4 layers of modeling masking tape that I had lying around, on the places that the rubbers on the upper half make contact.
It's not very pretty and they would probably fall off with 'rough' use, but it has been no problem to me.

If Nintendo could make batteries which lasted considerably longer whilst also meeting all their other requirements (cost, lifespan, size are the major ones), then the 3DS would have shipped with them. It's not a design flaw, it's a limitation in currently available technology.

The Nyko battery doubles the life of the stock battery and only adds about an inch of thickness to the system for $20 retail, which Nintendo could easily get for cheaper. It was also available about a week after the launch. Going from 3 hours to 6 is pretty significant, so I guess the broader question to ask is why Nintendo didn't budge on their hardware design a tiny bit to accommodate a much better battery, particularly when battery life had been such a huge Nintendo strength in every handheld prior.

I bought one of these things (for $3 on eBay):
And a USB 3DS charging cable. You put some AA batteries in it and plug the cable into it. The cable you get matters, because the first one I got (which was for DSi) could not carry enough power to charge the 3DS properly while it was on/open.

I stuck the soft side of velcro tape on the top half's rubber nubs and that works fine.
One hour of direct feed footage and commentary. Obviously don't watch if you don't want to ruin some of that moment of experiencing it again for the first time.
Does Dead or Alive have to be in the system to get the SpotPass costumes? Or can I safely swap in Ocarina and not miss anything?
I think you have to have in the system at some point in the particular day to get it. I don't know if it is strictly neccesary, but so far I've also been starting up the game to make sure it saves.
I don't know if the Wii Shop thread or here is the best place to talk about 3DS VC titles, but I'm really enjoying Donkey Kong '94 on Game Boy! I'd never played it before, but I had played Mario vs. Donkey Kong on GBA, and this is the obvious predecessor of that lineage, before it went all Lemmings-clone. A puzzle-platformer with tight Mario controls is definitely worth $3.99
So IS there a thread for 3DS VC chattings? I'm downloading Links Awakening, and I'd be interested in peoples thoughts on the worth of Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong in particular. I'm kinda on the fence about them without hearing a bit more about them.
I like Super Mario Land, it's charming and strange, but is also only a 45 minute game. A lot of others have said they don't consider it worth it.
On the other hand, I don't have much opinion on Donkey Kong, while others seem to have a lot of love for it. It's long, 100 levels I think, and was the first game to feature a really acrobatic Mario, doing backflips and spins and double jumps. Not strictly a Mario game, more of a platform puzzler. Supposed to be very worth it, one of the standout best Gameboy games.

Donkey Kong is a really great game. If you like the old arcade Donkey Kong at all, you will love the Game Boy version. It takes the Donkey Kong platforming concept and improves and expands on it in every way. Or, you could say it's the same concept reimagined from the ground up. There's not a lot of competition, but it's the best platformer of its kind. And there's something like a hundred stages, so it's worth the $4.
Super Mario Land is pretty good. I love the game myself, but it's kind of a strange thing... you'll need to play it yourself to find out, I think.
I'm gonna pick up DK94 soon, but I'm going to try to plan this so I don't end up with extra money in my eShop wallet. I wish I could move the extra Wii points I have over to my 3DS wallet.
The Wii Shop Thread has been a general "Nintendo Downloads" thread since the DSi came out, so that would probably be a better place to talk about it. Someone needs to change that thread's title to reflect that.

Well after struggling as much as I can to get connected to the eShop, I'm convinced something is either wrong with my 3DS, or my wireless setup. It almost instantly gives me Error Code 001-0502 now, despite the fact that system updates have worked flawlessly and I can use the browser without issue.
Before I try buying a new wireless router or calling in a replacement for the 3DS, though, I'm hoping I can test the waters at one of the hotspots that supposedly went up recently. Is there a place I can find a list of participating locations? I don't think every Best Buy is putting up a hotspot, and my local one is terrible about participating in this stuff, so I'd like to find out where to hunt around before trying this out.

Donkey Kong '94 is probably the best game on the original Gameboy - maybe only topped by Link's Awakening. It's a really, really fantastic game.
If you've ever played any of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, it's like that (and in fact those games were sequels to this), but way better. It still saddens me that that franchise continues to go backwards (I'm sorry, the Minis concept was dumb and remains dumb in comparison to the original).
I'm still pissed at no Super Gameboy support though. WTF Nintendo, why the hell do you always have to do things so half-assed? I mean, for fuck's sake, it's being emulated. How damn hard would that be to implement? It's not like you have to pay for extra chips and shit.

You should be able to connect at any AT&T hotspot. My local McDonalds has one, and I think that's a pretty standard thing.
Edit: Warlock, you and I are like this. I like Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and I need to get myself a copy of that because I haven't played it much, but the fact that they keep making those stupid minis sequels makes me want to cry. They're alright games on their own, but who thought it was a good idea to replace awesome platforming with minis?
You're not a real Paper Mario fan if you can't tell that Paper Mario 3DS is new. If you are new to the series it shouldn't matter if it was a port because you owe it to yourself to play either of the first two as well.
And I am not a Paper Mario fan, hence my asking.
My wife, however, is a big fan and adored both games.
A new Paper Mario might be the catalyst for buying a 3DS.
It is kind of telling that the 3DS VC has already blown its load with the two best GB games. Everything from here is downhill.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is *decent.* It's a *little* different from this game but it's close enough that it's still pretty ok (even though I think the art style looks like ass). In general, the minis just replaced the function of the key from this game. So not terrible. After that they moved all the gameplay strictly to the minis part (completely removing Mario AND Donkey Kong from anything but cutscenes) and the whole thing became more of a Lemmings clone. I really could never get into that.

Eh, there are a decent number of good Gameboy games left. I can only think of a handful on classic Gameboy, but Gameboy Color had a pretty big library. But just because these are the best two games on the system, doesn't mean they were the only good games.
Also, there are still six Pokemon games (or three versions of two Pokemon games :P). I am curious to see if they'll release those or not (and if they can emulate linking wirelessly).
One hour of direct feed footage and commentary. Obviously don't watch if you don't want to ruin some of that moment of experiencing it again for the first time.
So far it's just been Jabu Jabu's Belly.
Did they do anything interesting to the environments, or is it mostly just higher-resolution textures?
Jabu Jabu's Belly in particular could be interesting, or it could be exactly the same as always.

There are still PLENTY of good Game Boy games. I'm sure there are lots of people who would argue that the Wario Land games are the best games on the system, or that Mole Mania is the best game ever made, so they aren't out of good ones yet.
I think a lot of people don't realize how many awesome games there are on the Game Boy.
Well heck, Pokemon red and blue, Pokemon Pinball, Kirby Pinball, Final Fantasy Adventure, Final Fantasy Legend 1-3...I tend to lean toward the bigger experiences.

I think the problem with Gameboy is that the majority of the good games came later in the handheld's life, so they get overlooked a lot.
But yeah, Mario Land 2, Wario Land, Mega Man V (I thought for a minute that was released yesterday, only to be saddened to see it was the NES MM5 which sucked :P), Kirby, Final Fantasy Adventure (and maybe the two Legends games, never played 'em), etc
Gameboy Color also has the first Shantae which I am really damn anxious to play...
There's also the nostalgia factor, of course. Alleyway is nothing special, just an Arkanoid clone, but when my girlfriend found out I could download it for the 3DS she was all "HOLY SHIT" and insisted I get it immediately. Apparently her sister and she played the crap out of that game on their Game Boy when they were kids.
She has Arkanoid DS, which is by any metric a superior game, but she insists that Alleyway is better than that (or any other Arkanoid clone she's played). So yeah, YMMV.

Until Super Mario Land 2 and 3 come out, the 3DS VC won't have 'blown it's load' for me. Metal Gear Solid / 'Ghost Babel' is another title I'd love to see on the service from the Color era.
