Help me choose a new graphics card

So I'm pretty happy with my PC overall except for the graphics card, which is very outdated and causing problems. At the moment my graphics card is a Radeon HD 4500 series with a 2.3Ghz quad core AMD Phenom processor and 4GB of RAM. It's not a beast, but it's not too shabby as a gaming PC. Apart from the years old graphics card anyway.

I don't have a huge amount of money to spend so I'd like to keep it under £150. Money is a little tight at the moment and if I go much over that I imagine I'll be getting to the point where the cpu is going to be the bottleneck. I wouldn't be able to put that money together for a little while but I'd rather have something that will last me. At the moment I have my eye on a Asus 1GB Radeon HD 6850 (DirectCU PCI-E 2). I've heard they're pretty good and easily overclocked (if required). I've also seen the Asus 1GB Radeon HD 5670 (PCI-E 2.1 HDMI) which is much cheaper and would fall into the instant purchase category, but I don't know how much of a step down that is from the 6850. I get the feeling I would be better of saving up a little longer for it. If there are any other cards you can recommend that would be really helpful as this is my first foray into the market since about 2003. Ideally I'd like to not have to worry about replacing it after this for a few more years. Also, if it's not too much trouble, could you tell me if any of the cards I have mentioned (or any that may be suggested) would require a new power supply?

Thank you in advance :)

A 5670 is an old, crappy card. If you ask this question in the Computer build thread, there are about 10 guys in there who will try to help you out.

Tell them what power supply (and how many PCIe connectors it has), and what screen resolution you will be gaming at, and they'll probably throw you a couple of suggestions.

Dabs have the Radeon 6850 for around £120-130, such as this XFX. However, if you're willing to go just above your budget, they have an Asus 6870 here for £154.99. Alternatively, should you want an nVidia card, they have an Asus GeForce GTX 560 here for £139.99.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

At the risk of sounding lazy, if you go Nvidia GeForce (which I'm not saying you should, Radeon could also absolutely meet your needs), go EVGA. Their lifetime warranties, software profile updates, and utility software is really really nice.

Thanks everyone. After your responses and consulting with the Computer Build thread I have found and purchased my new card and I'm looking forward to its arrival. :rotate:

At your price range and given your other components, anything above the GTX 460 level is probably going to be cpu bottlenecked long before the gpu can max out ... hopefully you didn't pay more than you needed to.
